Description of the San Diego vacation condo rental
Sunset Sands is a lovely 2 bedroom ocean front condominium located in beautiful Mission Beach, San Diego, California. The condo is situated on a 2 block wide spit that separates the ocean beach from Mission Bay. Mission Beach is a continuous 3 mile stretch of clean, soft sand. And Mission Bay is itself an incredible scenic water playland.

And all this is still only 5 minutes from Sea World, and 20 minutes from the airport, downtown, the zoo, La Jolla, and many other attractions. For those familiar with the Mission Beach area, we are about half way to historic Belmont amusement park to the south, and to Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach to the north.

Whether on a business trip or a vacation, you will never stay in a motel or hotel room again after staying here. You will find your experience away from home far more pleasant and satisfying at Sunset Sands.

The unit is comfortably and newly furnished in a classic contemporary style. It was designed with the ocean in mind. You have spectacular views from all the main living areas. And the master bedroom faces the ocean, featuring a large window ocean view. There are 2 cable TV's, DVD and VCR players and a stereo system, as well as some CD's, tapes, games, puzzles, and books.

The kitchen has all you need for cooking a gourmet meal to baking a pie. Serving for 8 is provided along with lots of sizes of pots and pans, storage containers, utensils, etc. One thing is for sure, if you are going to cook, you can't do without the big things or the little things!

Sunset Sands is located directly on 3 continuous miles of beautiful Mission Beach. The beach is large, not crowded and very clean. The surf is exhilarating to play in, with or without the boogie boards. And the sunsets are unforgettable.

The neighborhood is friendly, and is a wonderful mix of people. You see surfers, retirees, families on vacation, young couples holding hands, and everything in between. The holiday or "laid back' atmosphere prevails. You will find everything you need during your stay in the immediate area.

Sunset Sands is professionally managed to make your stay go smoothly. The staff will help you get situated and will be available for anything you need. They can provide short term rental for special needs items such as a baby crib, etc. The unit is available year-round and is very reasonably priced. We welcome everyone.

the view was spectacular, falling asleep to the sound of the ocean was the best. the place has everything you need; it's not new but it is comfortable and really has everything you need, just bring food. i thought being on the top floor l would lack the atmosphere we were looking but it was the best; we spent most of the time on the balcony.

Condo is perfectly situated. The beach out the front and close to all that San Diego offers out the back. The parking garage was terrific, for one car, however other spots are nearly impossible to find. The condo is very small but well cared for and with four people it was just what we needed. We will definately stay at this location again, if it is available..

We chose this unit because of it's great location. I was able to watch my daughter enjoy her first surfing lesson right from the patio! It was nice to be able to step right outside and walk along the beach and boardwalk and shops and restaurants just a block over on Mission Blvd. The unit itself was comfortable and had all the amenities but could use some freshening. (The carpet is filthy and so are the towels: I have some nicer looking ones that I use to dry my car.) The beds were comfortable as was the double recliner facing the new flat screen TV and the great view. We appreciated the security of having our rental car in the locked garage.

Owner's reply:

The carpet will be replaced on Jan 9th, 2012. The unit was also pianted at tne end of Dec of 2011.

This condo is spotless and well decorated. The kitchen was very up to date and was well equipped. The chest on the deck has sand toys for kids and a couple of kites and beach games which is also fun. The payment process was easy and over all the whole experience was great. Location is everything with this condo. Ocean front, ground level with the board walk and near all kinds of points of interest. Beware that it is a little disconcerting at first to be right on the board walk and have people walking by at all hours, especially at night when you get people peeping in. It can sometimes be very noiser with skate boarders and such, but as soon as we figured out how to use the storm shutters for privacy we were fine and helped to decrease the noise at night too. Being on the bottom floor was a VERY nice feature, you can park your car right in front of the front door for easy access to unload your luggage and go in and out. The outdoor shower is nice to wash off teh sand, and the big screen TV and DVD player was very fun for late night movie watching. The Weather was sunny and wonderful 6 out of 7 days. The water was great too. There are several fabulous restaurants within 1-3 short blocks--very easy walking distance. Try out the Olive Cafe for breakfast, you wont be sorry. Bike rentals, boogie board rentals and surf classes are all within a one block walk to Mission Ave. Sea world is about 7 minutes away. Great fun to be had for families, girls getaway, and singles.

"Thank you for sharing your lovely condo! Your generosity and attention to detail made our stay even better. Thank you for all the supplies, plastic bags, condiments, etc., etc. We especially enjoyed the candle on the deck. Many blessings to you for all the joy you bring to others!!"

"Your condo was very well equipped with all necessary things - enough dishes, utensils, etc. Perfect! "

"What a truly beautiful place. We come to the beach as often as we can for weekend stays and this has been our most enjoyable stay. We don't live far away, but what a treat to be able to come for a while and enjoy this wonderful place. The view, the sound, and the very comfortable condo... It is our wedding anniversary and we couldn't have had a better time. Thank you! The peaceful surrounding and the constant crashing of the waves made it our best anniversary yet. The property management team was so helpful and professional. They made us feel our stay was important to them. We hope to come back here often. We don't want to leave!"

"Havin' a great time at the beach here. It is so nice and beautiful. I'm here with all my Mexican family. This place has everything - movies, a great view, comfortable beds, boogie boards, and cable."

"The view is so perfect. The water, the place and the sand are perfect. Out of any of the rooms, this one is perfect, the best. We are going to have the greatest spring break ever."

"We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your ocean home. Many thanks."

"We have had a really good time here on our first trip to this side of the U.S.A. There is so much we want to see before we return to England. We have found #14 very well equipped and comfortable. Every evening when we returned after dinner it really felt like coming home. We will miss the view and the sound of the surf so much."

It's perfect. Thank you!

"We had a wonderful week in San Diego. The apartment is so comfortable and homey and the view is amazing. We spent many an hour sitting on the balcony watching the waves come in. The sun came out for the last three days of our trip making everything seem even more beautiful. You San Diegans are really blessed!"

"What a view and sound! The perfect place for our eleventh honeymoon revival. Thanks for equipping the condo so well. We really cooked a 4-course menu for ten people without missing anything. Too bad our week is over. "

"Enjoyed the sounds of the waves, watching the dawn of each day on the Pacific, as the sky turns light. Experienced the moon setting into the ocean as well. The condo is a perfect location for the local attractions. We had a fabulous time in San Diego."

"One never knows what to expect when you rent over the internet. Because of your extended web site you gave us the info needed to go ahead and book our week. We were more than pleased with the condo, the beach area and San Diego itself! The furnishings were comfortable and good-looking. The essentials were there, as you said. The view was spectacular. I will hold it in my mind as we head back to Wisconsin with zero degrees and snow blowing hard. We hit Old Town, Tijuana, La Jolla, Sea Port Village, the beach, the beach, the beach. Thanks for a tremendous vacation. We would love to come back next year."

"Just had to come back for another slice. I dream and think of you often... I wish I could make you mine completely and forever... My never-ending love story with #14. We met some new friends this time around Kingston and Polly, some of the neighbors and their dogs. We feel completely at ease and at home here. I thank you for this ""piece/peace" of my life. I will "see/sea" you next year, my love."

We don't want to leave but we know we have to. Thank you for the wonderful week."

The condo was so great that even after seeing the Hotel Del Coronado, we still thought #14 was much better. We kept ourselves busy with the great selection of movies and books and enjoyed every minute of Spring break '03 in beautiful San Diego. Yes, some of us braved the mighty Pacific on the boogie boards. And although we were numb for a while, it was worth it.

"I gasped - my eyes saw nothing else, as the view enveloped me. I ran through the door and I was amazed at the spectacular view from #14. That's what I felt after I'd come through the door a week ago. And as I look at the ocean right now, I don't want to leave.

"My parents loved your place. Thanks again for the fair price and the flexibility. You sure know what a vacationer needs, don't you? You had everything from aluminum foil to spices to games and movies! So, how about you and I work a deal where I can just rent your place all year long. I wish."

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the neighborhood safe?
A: Yes, the Mission Beach neighborhood is safe. As an elderly couple, or a family with kids you will feel immediately at ease when you arrive.
Q: What is the beach area like?
A: Each beach community in the San Diego area has its own personality. Mission Beach is known as "eclectic." It is a wonderful mix of all types of people. You will see couples holding hands, families with children of all ages, the elderly, teenage kids in the water, foreign travelers from Germany and Japan, "locals" visiting for the day from inland, etc., etc. Many people are there on vacation. And overall you will get the contagious feeling of fun and happiness!
Q: o you take kids? Are there any other families who vacation around there?
A: es, children are welcome. And yes, many families vacation with their children in Mission Beach. There is nothing that will warm the heart like seeing these little ones playing in the surf with their sand castles, pails, and little floppy hats. You can always see lots of that.
Q: Is it noisy?
A: In and around the unit you will find that the beautiful sound of the ocean covers up most of the other sounds. And the neighbors on both sides are quiet. Occasionally, and mostly in the summer, you will hear some alley or board walk noise. You will sleep like a baby with the sound of the surf rolling in.
Q: What is the beach like? Rocky, or dangerous (glass)?
A: The beach is gorgeous soft sand. It is also very clean. Glass is never allowed on the beach, and that rule is strictly enforced. In addition there is some equipment that frequently rake the beach, filter the sand near the board walk, and sweep the boardwalk. You can walk on the sand with your bare feet (except in the summer at the hottest point of a sunny day).
Back to FAQ
Q: What is the ocean water temperature?
A: The water temperature is chilly. Many people do go in the water - especially the younger ones. And they say that "once you get used to it, it's fine." One option is to bring or rent (near the unit) a wetsuit. The water temperature gets is warmest during the September/October time frame.
Q: How crowded is the beach? How about right in front of the unit?
A: The beach is rarely crowded in front of the unit. Even in the peak summer season there is always room to spread your blanket out without someone right next to you. The main Pacific Beach area (about a mile north) and the Mission Beach area by the amusement park (about a mile to the south) are the only places that are crowded, and that is in the summer only. Those are the best places if you like to people watch!
Q: What floor of the building is the unit on, and w?
A: The third floor of a 3-floor building. There is an elevator, and it is easy to just walk up the stairs. The third floor offers a perfect perspective for the best ocean (and dolphin) views. And you are high enough above any boardwalk pedestrians for privacy..
Q: Does the unit have air conditioning?
A: The unit does not have central or window air conditioning. This is not found very often in San Diego home near the beach. They would rarely or never be needed. At the beach there is a constant breeze coming in from the ocean to keep the unit cool. We have 3 fans and a ceiling fan in the second bedroom, but they are normally only used at times during the summer.
Q: Do you have a clothes washer/dryer?
A: The washer in dryer are not in the unit. But they are just a few steps away in the parking garage. They are both coin-operated. These are here if you want to wash any of your clothes or the condo's linens during your stay. But remember, you do NOT have to clean the linens provided with the unit before you leave. We clean all the linens after you leave (at no extra charge).

Q: Sould I ask you a "stupid" question?
A: Please do not hesitate to ask any questions you want. As they say, there are no dumb questions. My wife and I may have been in your shoes - on your side of the fence. Just a few years ago we looked for a vacation rental here at Mission Beach. I had all the questions you had and more. For us, we just wanted to know about the area and the place before we plunked a bunch of money down.
Q: Is the unit a non-smoking unit?
A: Yes, it is.
Q: Is there much airplane noise?
A: As far as airplane/jet noise goes, we have very little - virtually none. Sometimes a beach patrol helicopter goes past the unit down the shoreline. But there is a takeoff and landing pattern that takes planes right over South Mission Beach. It can really be quite bad at times down there. Fortunately, Sunset Sands is far enough north of that area to miss almost all of that. (And by the way, this is something that the South Mission rental units don't tell you, of course!).
Q: Where is the nearest grocery store?
A: The nearest huge, full-service grocery store is called Ralph's. It is located about a 4 or 5 minute drive and about a 15 minute walk from Sunset Sands. There are other specialty grocery stores within a mile or so as well. They include the wonderful Trader Joe's which has great prices on all sorts of gourmet and healthy food , and also Henry's which specializes in natural foods and has fabulous fresh fruits and veggies. My wife only goes to the normal grocery store (Ralph's) for the few items that she can't get at the other two stores. And if you are feeling desperate or lazy, there are two small markets that are just (literally) a few steps from the unit. They have quite a few things considering their small size.
Q: Does the balcony face the ocean?
A: Yes, the balcony directly faces the ocean with fabulous views. The short front wall of the balcony is made of Plexiglas so you can see through to the ocean wherever you are sitting (you will often find a solid wall at the front of the balcony at other units - not a good idea!). One wall is mirrored to also allow easy viewing.
Back to FAQ
Q: Are there any parking fees?
A: There is no parking fee. Your car is parked in a covered secure garage (this is a rare feature for Mission Beach rentals). There is one space allotted for you at the unit. If you will have visitors or expect using a 2nd car, you will need to park on the street (a short walk).
Q: Do you have a pool?
A: We do not have a swimming pool. As far as I know, non of the vacation rental condos or homes in the area do have one. However, Belmont Park is home to The Plunge, a public Olympic-sized pool. The park and pool are about a 10 minute walk from Sunset Sands
Q: Are there restaurants nearby?
A: There is lots of casual dining in the area. It will take you many stays at Sunset Sands to explore all of the great eateries located within a mile or so of the unit. A well-known, well-established, and well-regarded seafood and steak restaurant is located about 100 steps from the unit. I have no trouble PROMISING you great dining experience while you are here. But don't forget some of the other wonderful restaurants San Diego has to offer, many of which are located within a 20 minute drive to the Gaslamp District (downtown), Seaport Village, etc.
Q: What is the mosquito and bug situation like there?
A: Amazingly, mosquitoes are rarely encountered at the beach. You can even leave the patio door open after dark without any bug-bother. Your may never go to Florida again!
Q: What is the driving time to some of San Diego attractions?
A: Sea World: 5 - 10 minutes.
San Diego Zoo: 15 - 20 minutes
Balboa Park: 15 - 20 minutes
Birch Aquarium at Scripps: 20 - 25 minutes
Cabrillo National Monument: 20 - 25 minutes
Murphy Stadium (football, baseball): 25 minutes
Coronado Island: 20 - 25 minutes
LegoLand: 40 - 50 minutes
Old Town: 10 minutes
San Diego Harbor and downtown: 15 - 20 minutes
Seaport Village: 15 - 20 minutes
Tijuana: 25 - 35 minutes
