Area Information
Staying at Brighton
I get up for breakfast and go over to the Olive Tree at Narragansett and Sunset Cliffs and get a paper. They have the Times ,LA papers and Wall Street . Either there or a block east at the Donut shop you can buy bagels or warm rolls. The people you will find are very friendly as in a small town (Bedford Falls). Newport street has all kinds of antique shops and restaurants and the Old Town Café is a great breakfast place. OB is a virtual island with natural barriers to traffic from all sides. You can bring your computer and hook up to our wireless . Sometimes the TV. Is temperamental and won't come on right away. Be patience and don't panic.
We find walking is a delight and a good walk 4 blks to the beach down Brighton and then into town stopping to shop or just people watch. There is a great hardware store on Newport and a drug store at Niagara and Sunset Cliffs. Lili, Bruce's wife, likes to walk or run up Sunset Cliffs 3 miles daily. A walk on the beach with your shoes off is all we need. Locals use Ebers a lot so be careful as it's a busy street.
There is tennis close with the Firehouse courts on Catalina free with four courts that seem always open. The city courts cost a few bucks and Barnes(6 blks east) is first class with Saturday morning lessons for $20 but there is a charge for courts also. They have clay which brother Jim likes. You have to wait until 8 a.m there or 9 a.m at the city courts over by the river. We went over to Coronado Island once and that's cool too. Bicycling is easy and there is a pump in storage. Go north on trails across the river and to Mission Bay or downtown to San Diego for a day ride. Bruce has bicycles and will act as tour director if he's around.
Golf at Coronado or Riverwalk -East on 8 for public courses. Usually $40 for cart and green fees. I haven't tried it but it didn't seem that busy. Torrey Pines is 8 miles north, but being the most famous public course in the world, it can be busy.
You can drive or take the bus downtown. Balboa Park is 10 minutes by car and has great museums and of course the famous zoo. There is a visitor center and the History Center along with the museums where you can book tours. OB has a library walking distance and there is a larger one in Pt Loma.
Reality in America is across Nimitz and there are all the stores and traffic that you miss from home. We like to go junking at the thrift stores and the AmVet store on Sutherland is the best anywhere. Within 15 minutes you can get to a Walmart , Target, In and Out, etc .
The water at the beach in winter is c. 60 degrees, warmer in summer and you will need a wet suit to swim in winter which you can rent for ½ day at Skate and Surf on Newport. There are other places too and you can buy one cheaply used. Surf and Skate has lessons in surfing which might be fun if you want to spend a couple bucks. There are sailing lessons over at Shelter Island and of course boat and Air Craft Carrier tours and beach volleyball at the end of Brighton. The climate is annoying being almost always 70 degrees, but sometimes it gets real cold at night when it drops to 50. Sometimes it rains and is cloudy for those who like adverse weather. Sit out in the sun on our new deck and have a brewski ( or coffee, whatever) .
Miscellaneous: For seafood, sports bar , conversation or look out at the Pacific you can go to Nicks, where a retired marine is usually posted in the bar to discuss politics, gays in the military or whatever. Happy Hour beer will set you back $2.
I offered to buy the hardware store but they said they weren't interested as it had been in the family since 1919.
The churches on Sunset have great bells and will chime at 5 p.m. You can get tee shirts and find out about OB history at the James Boys on Santa Monica and Bacon.

Have a good time and leave us a critique.

AMAZIG location.

June 15, 2013

Great size for our family of 3. Nice stroll to the beach and far enough from the busy streets. Bruce and Lily were AMAZIG hosts. Would definitely book this house again and have no problem recommending it to anyone and everyone

Owner's reply:

Thank you, Ashley. Wonderful having you & family. Sorry you had to leave early.

What a great host!

August 20, 2012

Bruce was the most accommodating host we have ever met. Our introduction included a tour of Ocean Beach including pointing out various amenities. He was also quick to assist with anything we needed throughout our visit and was excellent with his speedy communication, crucial when one is flailing about trying to find things. Our accommodations were clean and well-appointed. Would not hesitate to rent from him again.

Great location

July 24, 2012

Perfect place to kick back and relax. Close to everything. Easy freeway access to all points and easy walk to beach and downtown. Would stay again if in the area.

Owner's reply:

Thank, Milan. It was good to meet you and visit. Yep! We've got a little paradise here in Small Beach Town America. It reminds me of my little town growing up in rurul Nebraska, but with a big, big pond a few blocks away. We hope to see you again.
