Description from owner
Casa Heloc is is one mile outside of the Centro in the Colonia Santa Julia neighborhood above San Juan de Dios Market. We are close enough to Centro yet far enough to avoid all the noise!
You can walk into the Centro on paved sidewalks in about 15 minutes or call for a taxi to take you just about anywhere in the downtown for about 50 pesos. We are about 3 blocks to the local bus which is even less expensive at about 5 pesos into Centro.
Our locations offers far less traffic and noise, and if you prefer a more relaxed, lively, authentic Mexican neighborhood, Casa Heloc could be ideal for you.
This is a typical San Miguel casa, with lots of windows and plants, French doors to the side terrace and a decor featuring a collection of Mexican arts & crafts. As with almost all houses in San Miguel there is no central heat or air conditioning - we have a gas fireplace in the front room, rolling heaters for chilly nights and ceiling fans and French doors for cross breezes on warmer days.
The washer and dryer are on an outside kitchen terrace which is covered. Our side garden off the living and dining areas is quite secure and a safe place for pets and people to wander and sunbathe. The side terrace also has secure parking for one vehicle.
We have an English speaking property manager on call 24 hours/ 7 days to assist you with any emergencies or special needs you may have during your stay and she can arrange airport transfers if you need them. We also have a maid, Lupe, who cleans two days a week and a gardener who handles plant care every other week or more often if needed.

“Day of the Dead at Casa de Heloc!”
My travels outside the country have been limited to the guidance of group tours, but this trip was my first one on my own. The home owners and caretakers help you out throughout your stay to provide you with information about San Miguel and the surrounding area and culture but you still have the freedom to go out and adventure on your own with the comfort of learning a few choice phrases, how to properly tip, and the best restaurants with the best food. The house itself is full of amenities for cooking local food from the markets and is fully decorated with local artwork on every wall and shelf. The neighbors are all very friendly and ready to introduce you to their favorite places around town and Walter the neighborly dog loves to hang out if you choose to invite him in! San Miguel itself is very active and celebratory during the holidays. I did not have one bad experience in any of the restaurants or shops and people were very understanding of the limited Spanish I knew. There was so much to do in town that I did not even get to venture outside of the city and explore....this just means that I have to go back again. Everyday there was music playing around the restaurants in the Jardin from musicians who took as much pride in their music as the chiefs had in their food. At the time of my visit the prices at the restaurants and shops were incredibly affordable when compared to American prices. I could not recommend this trip more especially for people traveling to Mexico for the first time or even out of the country for the first time. Binders around the home are provided by the home owner and help diminish any fears or concerns one may have when traveling outside of their comfort zone and into a new place. Take the leap and buy the plane ticket and reserve a spot at Casa de Heloc today!
Owner's reply: Thank you Mark - So glad you enjoyed your first what I hope will be many visits to San Miguel and Casa Heloc. I'll tell Walter you said Hi the next time I'm there. You are welcome back any time. Janis

Once in awhile when traveling, you come across a place that grabs your heart and spirit so completely, that you know you will return there again and again. Casa Heloc is one of those places that from the moment you open the door, until you close it with reluctant goodbyes, you know you will never forget your stay. So what sets it apart? There are the obvious things: the 360 degree view from the rooftop deck looking down onto the centro of San Miguel, watching the morning sunrise, the art work beautifully displayed throughout the house, the magnificent and fully stocked kitchen, the courtyard off the living room for starlit dinners, and Lupe, housekeeper extraordinaire, who kept the place spotless! But what really struck us about Casa Heloc was that it really felt like a home to us, that kind of cozy ambiance of a place where you actually want to spend time just enjoying the space. We loved our exploring of San Miguel and outlying areas, but we were always delighted to come home again. We really felt like we were part of the community that surrounded us, always greeted with friendly Hola's, hearing the local music at night, the kids playing in the street, the occasional braying of the neighbors donkey or rooster, mothers walking their children to school, the calls of a street vendor passing buy. All of it, made it so special. And then there is Walter, the street dog...affectionately known as "The Mayor of Santa Julia", who completely stole our hearts. Thank You Janis for opening the doors of Casa Heloc to his very welcomed visits. So if you are looking for that special place to hang your hat while taking in the beauty and charm of San Miguel, then We absolutely recommend this home.

My husband and I just returned home from our second visit to San Miguel and we chose to stay at Casa Heloc both visits. We will do so again and again. The house is lovely and immediately feels like home. We love the gardens, the art, and the wonderful rooftop with views of the mountains and La Parroquia. Erika, the house manager and her staff as well as Lupe, the maid, were professional and responsive. Thank you Janis for making your home so inviting.

Lovely Bright Airy House in San Miguel

My husband and I along with Milo our 2 year old Schnauzer loved our stay at Casa Heloc. The main floor is very comfortable with two sitting areas , a nice dining room, and convenient kitchen. We loved how bright and airy the house was especially as some of the houses in San Miguel are a little dark and crowded. The master bedroom had a very comfortable king bed and beside it an office with WIFi and two desks which we loved . The house is only a 15 minute down hill walk to the Juan Dios market and 20 minutes to town center. The bus stop is only 3 block away and the buses run regularly or you can take a taxi for only 35 pesos. Outside is a small courtyard and there is also a roof top deck. Would we go back again next year? Yes , but it is already rented for the period we want The staff ( gardener and Maid) and the property manager Ericka are all fantastic. Erick will really go out of her way to make you feel comfortable Thanks Janis Robi and Dan

Casa Mexican Magic!
I had the good fortune to stay at Casa Heloc in May 2015 and its magic is still with me. In summary, Casa Heloc is a beautiful, gracious home in a vibrant small city. This is no bland, vanilla gated community rental – Casa Heloc captures the imagination, fills you with life, and resides in your heart. First, the basics: Casa Heloc appears just as pictured. The home is colorful, airy, comfortable, very clean, and has an excellent flow. The kitchen is well-appointed and there is a washer and dryer/laundry area outside the kitchen. There is a good television and wifi. Bedrooms are on the second floor, and each bedroom and the office has a full bath. The gardens are beautifully well maintained. The courtyard teems with life and color, and the rooftop patio has a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and mountains. The location sits just above the center of town and it is very easy to walk, taxi, or bus to town and beyond. We used the water cooler for drinking, cooking, and brushing our teeth, and the restaurants in town use filtered water, so dining was safe. The extras: Casa Heloc is full of authentic Mexican art, crafts, and pottery. Each bathroom has a different talavera pottery sink. The hutch has an ample variety of talavera dishes and bowls. The art is a mix of traditional crafts, such as Huichol string art, and modern paintings by local artists. The homeowners are attentive to client needs and are very keen on providing a gracious experience, such as greeting us with a gorgeous fresh flower display, and my arrival happened to be timed with the arrival of new, extremely soft, luxury towels. The magic: Casa Heloc is a vacation destination unto itself... The vibrant art, extensive book selection, and Mexican décor keep the vacation rich and interesting when you are inside the house... Hummingbirds live in the trees in the courtyard and visit feeders in planters next to the French doors – we spent many early mornings and lazy late afternoons in the livingroom, watching "hummingbird TV" just outside the window… Casa Heloc is located in town, so the sounds of church bells and family pick-up soccer games sweeten the air… Firework displays on the rooftop patio… Parades... The people of San Miguel de Allende are courteous and friendly. The taxi drivers navigate the steep, narrow, hilly streets with adroit patience and humor. Casa Heloc far exceeded our expectations and we fell in love with San Miguel de Allende. We intend to return!

In a word: Great!
We are just finishing up a 6 month stay in Casa Heloc and it has been, in a word, Great! The house is comfy, very light and filled with interesting folk art. The management company has been promptly responsive when called upon for assistance. Lupe and Vicente (maid and gardener) have been smiling, trustworthy and hard-working. When friends have come by to visit and see the house, they say "Wow, what a great house!" Yes, it is. We will return to Casa Heloc and highly recommend it anyone looking for a charming house in a safe Mexican neighborhood with a great rooftop. Margies at sunset - It does not get any better.

Janis......I know it is lazy of me, but just take everything good ever written about Casa Heloc and at least double it. This, our fourth year renting in SMA, (3 months) sped by without a single negative issue. Your management company, Lupe and Vincente, even Walter were just great. For what it is worth, having been in the vacation business at one time, after our visit I usually write or phone the owner off the record with any suggestions for improvement we might have. You will not be hearing from us. We have no suggestions. Dont change a thing. We would recommend Casa Heloc without reservation. Sincerely, N & M.
