Area Information
Santa Fe, founded in 1610, is the oldest capital city in the country with a rich heritage of Spanish, Native American, and Anglo cultures, world class museums, galleries, adobe architecture, restaurants, opera, chamber music, all in a spectacular mountain setting.

At 7000 feet in elevation with a low-humidity climate, it features pure mountain air with mild summers averaging highs in the 80's and lows in the 50's at night, perfect for outdoor living and dining. Winters are also pleasant as there are 300 days of sunshine per year, but there is skiing in the mountains, including cross-country skiing in spectacular settings.

There are marvelous mountain and desert hikes and such sites as Bandelier National Monument, ancient pueblo ruins in a beautiful canyon an hour from Santa Fe. Taos Pueblo, a World Heritage Site an hour and a half after a beautiful drive along the Rio Grande. In Taos are also the much painted and photographed Ranchos de Taos church, the Rio Grande Gorge, the Kit Carson Museum, the historic restored Martinez Hacienda and much more. Taos was home to Kit Carson, Mable Dodge Lujan, and D. H. Lawrence at various times.

A drive through the Jemez Mountains west of Santa Fe is a beautiful day excursion, with the Valdes Caldera, one of the great scenes of the West, and a back-in-time saloon in Jemez Springs, the Ojo Bar and Grill. There are also many ancient pueblo ruins in the National Forest of the Jemez Mountains, old railroad tunnels, beautiful mountain streams, and red rock canyons.

White water rafting is available along the Rio Grand north of town. An easy hike with swirling rock formations and a slot canyon is a half hour south of town at Tent Rocks National Monument.
