Description from owner

It's a gift to discover - in our demanding, busy and sometimes turbulent world - a spot where you can find peace. A place where life's pace is slower, where you can reconnect with what matters most - family, friends and the beauty of the natural world around you - and where you can stop, breathe and stare into a memorable summer sunset. Kill Kare is such a place. Some have called it "magical".

Kill Kare is uniquely located in a pine forest on the shores of a pristine freshwater lake on the Blue Hill Peninsula of Maine's Down East coast - only 1/4 mile inland from the ocean waters of the Penobscot Bay. So named because you can come here to "kill your cares," the cottage has been in our family since it was built in 1917. There is a warm spirit about this home that provides both energy and peace - a place to recharge and to unwind.

It is an ideal family retreat where you can do as much or as little as you please. Its deeply wooded site on a sparkling lake offers a beautiful setting to enjoy a variety of water sports. Much more comfortable for swimming and boating than the nearby salt waters, the lake is literally outside your front door.

The cottage faces west so imagine yourself sitting on the expansive wrap-around porch - feeling as though you are on your own private yacht - and enjoying a stunning sunset. Later in the evening, venture out onto the porch and take in the stars that are so bright they seem to pop out of the sky. There is ample seating and dining options on the porch with magnificent water and waterfowl views.

Kill Kare's inviting living room with plenty of comfortable seating is anchored by a large fieldstone fireplace. We supply the wood for your cozy fires in the evenings. There is also a dining room, and a well-equipped country kitchen with eat-in space. Six bedrooms (two queen-sized, two single twins and two double twins) allow Kill Kare to comfortably accommodate a maximum of ten guests. There are two and one-half baths. One full bath on the first floor with tub and shower is adjacent to the downstairs queen-sized room. A second full bath with tub is adjacent to the upstairs queen-sized room. There is a half bath at the end of the upstairs hall. Additionally, there is a separate shower room on the first floor.

We have developed an online Renter's Guide in which we share numerous suggestions of things to do and see, where to shop and eat and what to hike and climb in our area. It is a wonderful resource that is always being updated. There will be a hard copy of the Guide in Kill Kare when you arrive.

2019 marks Kill Kare's 12th rental season and we have been celebrating over 100 summers on Walker Pond. For several years in a row - based on the many favorable guest reviews - we have been rated "Excellent" and "Top Vacation Rental" from TripAdvisor and FlipKey.

Come sit on the porch and let the sound of gently lapping waves soothe your soul as your cares just slip away. This is lakeside living at its best. Join us and make some memories!

About the area

Just minutes away from our mile-long private drive are breath-taking maritime views along Maine's Down East rock-bound coast with quaint fishing villages, inviting gift shops, first-class restaurants, art galleries, book stores, artist colonies, antique shops, local farmers' markets and superb seafood freshly caught from the cold Maine waters. Kill Kare is a perfect base from which to explore the beauty that is Maine and the scenic towns and areas along the nearby coast: Blue Hill, Deer Isle, Stonington, Castine, Cape Rosier, Camden, Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor. Our online Renter's Guide is a full of information about Maine's beautiful Down East coast.

Getting around

A car is definitely necessary to get around as Kill Kare is in the woods on the coast.

Getting here

Full driving directions are found in Kill Kare's online Renter's Guide that appears on Kill Kare's website which we will be happy to share with you in a personal email. Bangor International Airport is one hour and Portland is about 3 hours from Kill Kare. A hard copy of the Renter's Guide will be in Kill Kare when you arrive.

Interaction with guest

In 2008, we turned our family cottage into an inviting and comfortable retreat for families to enjoy. While we rent Kill Kare, our family spends the summer up the hill in our carriage house apartment called Chinook. We're hands-on hosts (without being intrusive) and are happy to help guests take full advantage of their Down East experience. We greatly enjoy meeting all of our guests and have had the pleasure of making many new friends over the course of the decade we've been sharing our home with others. I would like to add that we answer every single inquiry that we receive with a personal email.
