Description of the Sedgwick vacation cottage rental

It's a gift to find - in our very demanding and busy world - a spot where you can find peace. A place where life's pace is slower, where you can reconnect with what matters most - family, friends and the beauty of the natural world around you - and where you can stop, breathe and stare into a memorable summer sunset. Kill Kare is such a place. Some have called it "magical".

Kill Kare is uniquely located in a pine forest on the shores of a pristine freshwater lake on the Blue Hill Peninsula of Maine's Down East coast - only 1/4 mile inland from the ocean waters of the Penobscot Bay. So named because you can come here to "kill your cares," the cottage has been in our family since it was built in 1917. There is a warm spirit about this home that provides both energy and peace - a place to recharge and to unwind.

It is an ideal family retreat where you can do as much or as little as you please. Its deeply wooded site on a sparkling lake offers a beautiful setting to enjoy a variety of water sports. Much more comfortable for swimming and boating than the nearby salt waters, the lake is literally outside your front door.

The cottage faces west so imagine yourself sitting on the expansive wrap-around porch - feeling as though you are on your own private yacht - and enjoying a stunning sunset. Later in the evening, venture out onto the porch and take in the stars that are so bright they seem to pop out of the sky.

Kill Kare's inviting living room with ample seating is anchored by a large fieldstone fireplace. There is also a dining room, and a well-equipped country kitchen with eat-in space. Six bedrooms (two queen-sized, two single twins and two double twins). There are two and one-half baths (one with bath and one with bath/shower) and a separate shower room on the first floor. Kill Kare can comfortably accommodate a total of ten guests.

2017 marks Kill Kare's 10th rental season in addition to the cottage's 100th anniversary. For several years in a row - based on many favorable guest reviews - we have been rated "Excellent" and "Top Vacation Rental" from TripAdvisor and FlipKey.

Come sit on the porch and let the sound of gently lapping waves soothe your soul as your cares just slip away. This is lakeside living at its best. Join us and make some memories!

Area Information
Just minutes away from our mile-long private drive are breath-taking maritime views along Maine's Down East rock-bound coast with quaint fishing villages, inviting gift shops, first-class restaurants, art galleries, book stores, artist colonies, antique shops, local farmers' markets and superb seafood freshly caught from the cold Maine waters.

Kill Kare is a perfect base from which to explore the beauty that is Maine and the scenic towns and areas along the nearby coast: Blue Hill, Deer Isle, Stonington, Castine, Cape Rosier, Camden, Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor.

We have created an extensive online Renter's Guide that is available to guests and includes all kinds of information about the cottage, it's history, driving directions, contact information, and loads of suggestions for what to do and see, what to hike and climb and where to shop and eat in the area. It is a wonderful resource that guests refer to frequently. There will be a hard copy of this information when you arrive at the cottage.

Everything We Were Hoping For!

August 16, 2015

My big, boisterous family planned a family reunion in Maine and we could not be more pleased that we chose Kill Kare cottage. It is an absolutely wonderful, well loved, classic but spacious Maine cottage on the absolutely gorgeous, pristine, Walker Pond. Well, it's more of a lake, really, and it is just beautiful. Catherine, the owner, is very proud of Kill Kare as it has been in her family for years and, honestly went above and beyond to help us plan a perfect gathering for crowd. We planned a big opening night lobster dinner for 10 and placed an order for the seafood which Catherine and her husband kindly offered to pick up for us. Unfortunately, our fisherman sadly passed away just three days before our gathering, but Catherine and her husband managed find another supply, picked it up and had waiting on ice for us when arrived - ALL on July 4th. The cottage is extremely clean, well kept with every kitchen item you could possibly need organized and easy to find in the kitchen. All bedrooms have some view of the lake and surrounding woodland. We spent all day on the gorgeous wrap around porch, playing games and watching the kids jump off the diving raft. We even got a couple nights that were cool enough to build a fire in the beautiful old fire place. There is plenty of parking and plenty of room for everyone to spread out. The linens were all freshly laundered and plentiful. We even had a Pirate's Day with plenty of games and much fun...and the Kill Kare porch was just perfect for it. We've already re-booked for next year and hope to make Kill Kare our yearly family retreat. This review is A+, 10 stars, for a beautiful fun place well cared for by intelligent, kind, helpful and FUN people who take a lot of pride in their family cottage. We all can not wait to go back!

Owner Supplied Testimonials

From the 2014 Kill Kare Guestbook -
First whole week in September and the weather is cool, but glorious. Skies have been clear with a little bit of fog on the lake in the morning. We have had a couple of loon sightings and daily visits from a hummingbird. Of course, there have been trips to Caterpillar Hill for sunsets and Bar Harbor for shopping. The lack of traffic has been wonderful.
One of the best days was spent going nowhere. We sat on the porch sunbathing, reading, painting and staring into space. What a fabulous way to spend a day after driving up from home. Looking forward to doing the same thing next year. Can't wait for 2015!

From the 2014 Kill Kare Guestbook -
What a magical place! Thank you so much for sharing it. We enjoyed kayaking on the lake, picking up picnic fare at Rooster Brother (in Ellsworth) and eating on the rocks at Schoodic Peninsula (heavenly!), shopping in lovely coastal towns and picking our own lobsters at the Stonington Co-op. Another highlight was, of course, enjoying sunsets, wine, great company and reading on the fabulous porch. What a delightful week!

From the 2014 Kill Kare Guestbook -
Our fifth summer here together (sixth for R and D) and we had perfect weather, happy eating and doing almost nothing but talking and playing. Curtis Cove and El El Frijoles and Fishnet were great as always. Pizza at Tinderhearth is wonderful.
Best moment - watching an eagle make an (unsuccessful) dive for a loon, then swim slowly to shore.
We'll be back as always.

From the 2014 Kill Kare Guestbook -
Wonderful house - had a great time!
What a magical week with my family and the house and lake were spectacular!
It was a peaceful relaxing week on the water.
Nicest house I've ever been to in Maine!

From the 2014 Kill Kare Guestbook -
What a way to spend the end of a honeymoon. Thank you for this treasure of a place and your incredible hospitality.
More than surpassed our friends' praise. We love Kill Kare and hope to return. Thanks so much for your hospitality and sharing of this treasured home.
Love everything!
Hard to imagine a more fitting end to a honeymoon than spending a week relaxing with close family and friends at Kill Kare. This place was perfect as always!
Another wonderful week that flew by much too quickly! Such a wonderful magical place and such amazing company!

From the 2014 Kill Kare Guestbook -
Had a wonderful time! Swam, Kayaked and ate terrific meals thanks to a very well supplied kitchen.
Explored the beautiful countryside and when not eating in tried out a few of the local eateries: Boatyard Grill (Lobster BLT), Deep Water Brewery (great brews and terrific chicken tacos, fish and chips and BBQ). Try Tinderhearth for bread and pizza.
Loved hiking Acadia and swimming at Sand Beach. Everyone loved their rooms and all the great antique decor.
Our time was too short.

From the 2014 Kill Kare Guestbook -
I am considering stamping my feet and refuse to leave! However, I don't believe the next family would appreciate that.
What a beautiful week! Quiet, peaceful, magical. A true jewell is Kill Kare Kamp. Cathy and Dan, THANK YOU! We'll be back.

From the 2014 Kill Kare Guestbook -
This has been a glorious week...Walker Pond was breezy and waves lapped consistently on the shores. A most memorable way to wake up. We explored Stonington, Deer Isle, Castine and Bar Harbor/Acadia but spent most of our days nestled in chairs on the porch or dock. We caught fish, kayaked and loved the quiet. Sunsets and board games ended everyday with smiles and laughter. We hope to come back.

From the 2014 Kill Kare Guestbook:
This ends our week of tranquility, fun and laughter here at Kill Kare Kamp. I loved the wrap-around porch and the sounds of the lake. The antiques and the beautiful flowers were most enjoyable to me. Being with family is my life and will always remember this special time that we spent together. Thanks for a memorable vacation at your refreshing home.
We had a great time and enjoyed the relaxation and tranquility of the lake. Beautiful place. Thank you!
Our week at Kill Kare ended with a bang! (Hurricane Arthur followed by July 4th fireworks around the lake - a day late)
Highlights: Fresh lobsters from Stonington
Hiking the Beehive
Exploring the quiet side of Acadia
2 Eagle sightings and Loons
Kayaking on the lake, relaxing on the porch
Thanks, Cathy and Dan, for a unique experience!

An authentic Maine cottage steeped in nostalgia. This lakeside home is a family treasure, lovingly cared for. Its site by the lake is spectacular, facing west for wonderful sunsets on the wraparound porch. The owners are present and available, and lovely people. This was a memorable getaway!

Such a special and beautiful place! Reminded us all of our own camp days. Kill Kare was a perfect introduction to Maine for us first timers. Most enjoyed relaxing by the lake - but had a wonderful time exploring the area as well (Jordan Pond, Deer Isle, Acadia, Stonington...) Kill Kare is a treasure and we can't wait to return! Thanks for everything!

Everyone had a great time! Especially loved the porch! We spent many hours fishing, swimming, kayaking and reading. Thanks for sharing this wonderful house. And, the chocolate mint brownies were delicious! Hope we will have the opportunity to visit again.

Over the years I have learned to manage my expectations...but Kill Kare has far exceeded my greatest.
This place, this home reflects everything that you and your family have lovingly invested over the last century. The beauty, the history, the honor of this unique spot is evident from the moment we arrived. Thank you for sharing it with us.

What a wonderful week we have had! I could not have imagined a more perfect setting, something out of a wonderful dream or distant memory and time. We have so enjoyed the porch, the fire, the lake, the quiet, the sunsets...Holding these memories of late summer at Kill Kare very tightly so that they stay with me through the cold winter months and long after (until next year hopefully!)

From the Kill Kare Guest Book - 2013

I feel so privileged to have been invited to your lovely home on Walker Pond by my friends. The most magical place I know. I will miss it very much and hope to be invited back!

Another memorable trip for the SigEp guys from Randolph-Macon! Cannot wait to come back to Kill Kare and enjoy more peace and tranquility. Thank you for making our 2nd trip as memorable as the first.

What an incredible first trip to Maine! It was everything I expected and more...I look forward to many more trips to Kill Kare.

Another incredible trip and can't wait to come back. Hopefully sooner than four years from now!

Maine is definitely a welcome break during the work year and a good place to catch up with friends. Thank you!

From the Kill Kare Guest Book - 2013

Being here is everything we love about Maine. Can't wait for our next visit.

From the Kill Kare Guest Book - 2013

Really among my favorite places to be in the world. Hours on the porch, a roaring fire for chilly evenings and a gorgeously clean, clear, refreshing lake to jump into anytime of any day. I have been renting on the Maine coast for fifteen years and never found a more perfect spot than this, to which I've returned -- with an ever-expanding roster of friends and family -- for five years running now. The house is clean, the kitchen stocked with every pot, pan and wine opener you could need. Nearby markets and restaurants and warm (ish!) ocean beaches mean that fresh seafood, vegetables and saltwater are just minutes away, but the location, down a long drive into the woods and on an unbelievably peaceful lake, makes you feel like you've found your own private paradise. Just note that this is a Maine camp, not a luxury hotel. While it is amply outfitted with games, books, comfortable furniture, towels, bedding, a grill and cooking implements, it's not a slick, full-service resort kind of place. It's for people who looking to spend time close to water, wind, wildlife and pine trees. As long as that's what you're after, you simply won't find a better vacation choice. Enjoy!

From the Kill Kare Guest Book - 2013

This was my 5th year, renting the cottage. Each year has been very relaxing, sitting on the porch or at the kitchen table, visiting with family and friends. The sunsets across the lake are amazing. If seeing them from the porch isn't good enough, just drive the mile up the dirt road, take a right on rt. 15 to the top of Caterpillar Hill to the view over Walker Pond, all the way to the Camden Hills, Penobscot Bay and Deer Isle. There is lots to do and see in the area, from Castine to Stonington to Bar Harbor and Acadia. The only drawback is that you must be ready to drive to see things. The cottage is remote and other than the road in there is no where to walk. Cathy has supplied lots of information on places to see and dine when you do venture out. For dining in, there is an excellent grocery store in Blue Hill, only about 20 minutes away. I'll be back next year.

From the Kill Kare Guest Book - 2013

We had a wonderful family vacation at Kill Kare this summer. We loved sitting on the porch watching the beautiful sun sets, kyaking in the mornings, and playing board games after dinner. The Larson's are gracious hosts making the stay very comfortable. We would love to return in the future.

From the Kill Kare Guest Book - 2013

If you love all things Maine then this is the place for you.
Kill Kare will love you back and restore you to your most joyful self so quickly it will take your breath away. The lake view draws you out to the wraparound porch the moment you walk in the door. You will want to live the rest of your life on that porch.
Cathy and Dan are the most welcoming and gracious hosts and have supplied with meticulous detail all things to do in the area, which are many and exciting or interesting and physically challenging if you wish.
Kill Kare is wonderful from the porch to the wonderful stone fireplace to the chef quality equipped kitchen to the beautifully furnished bedrooms. The antiques and memorabilia in the house are an integral part of the Kill Kare experience.
Kill Kare Kamp should be on most everyone's bucket list.

From the Kill Kare Guest Book - 2013

This was my second trip to Kill Kare, and once again, the cottage exceeded my expectations. The cottage is absolutely gorgeous and drips with the kind of timeless Down East charm that makes for the perfect Maine getaway. The home is beautifully furnished with a lifetime of antiques and decorations that give it a wonderful sense of authenticity and comfort. Our days were spent fishing on the lake (largemouth bass were biting shad lures), exploring the lush surroundings, and making daytrips to the myriad coastal villages in the area. If you can bring yourself to leave the tranquility of Walker Pond for the day, I recommend you head to a local lobster pound and bring back fresh Maine lobsters; the kitchen has absolutely everything you need to prepare a wonderful meal. My only regret is that I had to leave, but I will be back very soon.

I look forward all year long to the soothing I know my soul will receive at Kill Kare - still, I believe, one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Thank you so much! I have loved every moment of our time at Kill Kare. It is the perfect spot for a family reunion. In fact, I am already looking forward to next year!

From lobsters and drinks with Cathy to exploring Acadia National Park - and everything in between - our stay at Kill Kare Kamp has been magical. The history of the house is fascinating and Cathy tells it with the pride it deserves. It has been fantastic to spend a week relaxing, eating and most importantly, making a wonderful new friend. Looking forward to returning.

We all agreed that our time here was just what the doctor ordered! We spent almost all of our time on the amazing porch reading, talking, eating and listening to the loons. Our golden retriever LOVED the lake, the porch and the dock. None of us wants to leave and only wish we could stay longer...Thanks for a wonderful stay. We're already thinking about our stay here next year.

What a great place! I'd never been to this part of the US before and I can't wait to come back!! Loved every minute of everything!!

Loved the loons and eagles. Loved the porch. Loved the lake. Loved everything!

Most wonderful, cozy, beautiful, fun place with good friends and a great "landlady".

Words cannot express how much this week has meant to me. We'll be back!

Kill Kare has proven to be an ideal place for our family and the annual reunion to gather. its history and peaceful setting on Walker Pond was perfect for evenings on the porch, gathering inside around a cozy fire and just talking amongst ourselves about our history in this area. We saw the resident bald eagle, the family of otters and the loons on the Pond. This place has so much to offer. Thanks for letting us share this beautiful spot which your family has maintained on Walker Pond.

If you love Maine, as we all do, there is no better place in the state - maybe eve the world - to be than at Kill Kare Kamp. There is everything and more to sustain, soothe, enlighten and entertain come rain or shine. The little saying gracing the table in the living room says it best: "How beautiful it is to do nothing and then rest afterwards." Thank you, Cathy, for letting our family and friends become a wee part of the history of the truly magical Kill Kare Kamp.

This is such a special place - great for relaxing and restoration...The idyllic setting made everything more special. The sounds - of the waves lapping, of the loons and of the quiet - will remain etched in my memory. Thank you.

Enjoyed our time with old friends and new friends and seeing the beautiful sights. Perfect vacation!

Great time! The cottage lived up to all of our expectations. Thanks for the memories!

Simply lovely, warm, beautiful! I am a little girl back in my grandparents' camp but better. Thank you for sharing this grand house (home) with us and for your impeccable attention to detail!!!

Just wonderful!! Truly the best house we've had - and we've had many. All my "kares" are washed away.

Great time! Always loved Maine, but never quit like this...Thanks Kill Kare - a time not to forget!!

This was an amazing and unforgettable week. Thank you for sharing this beautiful home and its history with us!

Enjoyed every minute of this beautiful place - thank you for sharing it with us. We're happy to be part of the Kill Kare Kamp "family". And to future guests - I highly suggest laying on the dock at night and watching the spectacular starry sky.

Eight people were introduced to Walker Pond and Kill Kare on this trip and it was a great experience for all of us. This is truly a gem of a home. Cathy, thanks so much for everything and I hope that Kill Kare "kontinues" on for years to come.

A lovely home! Clearly many happy memories have been made here - thank you for helping me make my own.

What an incredible week - from the amazing house to the big dipper to seeing the bald eagle - time got away from us and we had a trip of a lifetime!...We had never experienced a lake house before and this was a wonderful retreat. Enjoyed every minute! Thanks to Cathy and Dan - so grateful for the time spent with our family and friends.

Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine such a beautiful place! We feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to visit Maine and experience such peace. Thank you, Cathy and Dan, for your warm hospitality...Will hopefully bring the entire clan next year!

Thank you for this absolutely outstanding experience. Your house is beautiful and so special! Absolutely loved everything about it.

A perfect two weeks. Thank you so much for this place we love returning to and that our kids are growing up in every summer....With so much affection - can't wait till next year...

If this isn't heaven on earth, it has to be close!!

Kill Kare Kamp is heavenly and it has been a real treat to get to know you and your family. Thank you for a memorable week.

Stunning sunsets, the smell of balsam and the cry of loons...and I never had to leave the porch! Kill Kare embraced me from the moment I walked in the door. It is inviting, rich in history and has the best and biggest fireplace I have ever had the pleasure of falling asleep in front of. The location is unbeatable - sitting right on the lake but just minutes from the salt water and great hiking trails. The Larson's warmth and generous spirit were the icing on the cake!
