Description from owner

A two bedroom mountain cottage on a private 30 acre estate in Sewanee,TN can be your personal retreat to recharge. We are rich in nature and abundant with comforts; deer, fox, fish, rabbits, ducks, geese , butterflies, wildflowers, flower gardens, raised bed vegetable and herb garden, three ponds, private hiking trails, fire pit, picnic table makes your stay an integral part of the experience of a natural mountain environment.

We offer tremendous value for a two bedroom cottage with an abundance of amenities. The cottage is just shy of 1,000 sq feet, with a large living room, complete kitchen, two bedrooms, and a very large bathroom.

Each room of the air conditioned cottage is decorated with a country or mountain inspiration. Why come to the mountain just to rent a motel room, when you can have the comfort of a private home on an estate, for a better price?

The cottage has two bedrooms, each with traditional quilts. For your maximum sleep comfort, a King Size Sleep Number bed is featured in the Master Bedroom. No where will you find a bed of this quality and size in another local cottage or cabin. This room is decorated with local wildflower photos and 2 tiffany styled lamps. The second "The Fox and Fish" bedroom has a set of bunk beds. For privacy and relaxation, each bedroom has a TV.

The large living room has a dual reclining couch, a reclining chair and an upholstered rocking chair. The 30" TV has premium satellite programming. Current popular magazine are on the end tables. Bird and flower books are in the bookcase.

The "Red Chicken Kitchen" seats four and comes complete with a full size refrigerator, electric stove, oven dishwasher, microwave, coffee pot, blender, toaster and a full set of dinnerware, dishes, wine opener, pots and pans. The kitchen has a bay window with a garden view. A herb and vegetable garden is located in the fenced in back yard. Snip some basil or pick a tomato! The front porch has a propane barbecue. A full size washing machine and dryer complete your needs.

The bathroom is surprisingly large with dual vanities with mirrors, a separate shower and large soaking tub, with a huge full length mirror. Everyone is pleasantly surprised by the bathroom size.

Red Oak Hollow is very kid friendly. For the very little ones, we have an available high chair and playpen. There are stuffed animals on the beds, small stools, games and puzzles, plastic cups, sippy cups and covers for electrical outlets. Safety for the little ones.

As owners, we live on the property and maintain the cottage and gardens. If you have a question, need directions, looking for a recommendation for hiking or dining, we are here to help. Our unique feature is that our estate is large, private, rural, peaceful and yet so close to the campus.

About the area

The campus of the University of the South is a charming English style village. Not a chain business in site, including our unique coffee shops, cafes and gift stores. Bikers and Hikers will love this mountain. There are endless possiblities to keep you busy and fit. Some of the hikes include Fiery Gizzard, Buggytop, Greeter Falls, Blue Hole, Stone Door, Bridal Veil Falls,Cove, Cedar Hollow Lake and Shakerag Hollow. We have maps and info so you can plan your day hikes. Hike or Bike in beautiful forest, with waterfalls and wildflowers.

Getting around

This is a rural community; you will need a car. There is not taxi service. There is no Uber service. You can rent a bike in Sewanee, by the hour, half day, day or week. We have a 5 mile paved bike path called the Mountain Goat Trail. Round trip will get you to Monteagle on a beautiful, safe and thru the woods ride. Great for families or for those who want to exercise without concerns about traffic.

Getting here

For University guests who always want to know if we are located in Sewanee; yes, we are in Sewanee, but not on campus. We are a private 30 acre estate. The homes listed on campus are on lots, not acres. We are 8 miles from campus. The road is paved and the speed limit on HWY 156 is 55 miles. The speed limit on campus is basically 20 miles per hour and at some popular student places only 15 miles per hour. We will send you a map, with driving directions. It's very easy. We are on Google Earth with a little green icon.

Interaction with guest

We will be here to greet you, hand you the keys and to instruct you on the operation and safety of the cottage. We begin check in at 3 p.m. If you prefer another check in time, please arrange with us one week before check in date. We are very flexible, but I often have to plan my personal schedule to be here. We live on the 30 acre property and can be of assistance. The cottage has an operational book to answer your questions and hiking maps, restaurant menu samples and our departure policy. We do not allow overnight guests for any reason. Our maximum occupancy is four people. Nobody sleeps on the couch or floors. This is a very nice place.

“Awesome vacation!!!”

Reviewed 4 May 2015

This is a perfect, relaxing vacation cottage in a gorgeous setting, especially for those who like the outdoors. There is lots to do for excited youngsters with a pond to canoe and fish, badminton, a lovely walk through the woods, etc. And for dog lovers, there are 3 adorable small friendly dogs (Billy, Camo, and Daisy Mae) at the nearby owners' home. There are also movies provided with 3 TV's in the cottage. For an adult getaway, the peaceful cottage provides seclusion, and yet is only 5 to 10 minutes from Sewanee or Monteagle. The owners are very kind, and even made us a campfire one night down by the pond to enjoy. We loved our stay, and almost don't want to tell anyone because it might get too booked for us to come back. This is our second time staying here, and we love it!

“Heavenly!”

Reviewed 1 May 2015

My daughter and I came for a little RandR and boy did we get it. The surroundings are gorgeous- and quiet- and private. I swear I could feel my blood pressure improving! A couple of hours in a two person hammock , reading, was bliss. The hosts are perfectly lovely but unobtrusive. The place was far better than expected and than the photos can show. We will definitely be back! ( Kind of hate to share this gem. I want it available when we want to visit! :)

Owner's reply: I love your comment on how your blood pressure was improving with your stay here. Nature has a way to soothe the common commotion of our lives. We would love to have you back and thanks for all the great thoughts and words. "Far better than expected" is what I aim for and I am so glad you noticed.

“Home away from Home”

We enjoyed our stay and felt right at home. The owners were available to meet any needs we had. We will definitely be staying here again, if it is available!

Owner's reply: Thanks for the kind words. it was great meeting you and we glad your family felt right at home. We hope to be your Sewanee Home away from Home.

This place was perfect. The cottage had ample space and all the necessary amenities needed for a great get away. There were 4 people in our party and we prepared most of our meals right in the cottage. The local store isn't to far down the road and it is also near a great smoke house. The owners are extremely nice and very helpful.

Owner's reply: We are happy that you had a chance to explore our great outdoors and than relax and cook at the cottage. We would love to have you back and thanks for the kind words and stars. Mesha

“Lovely Cottage on priv property near Sewanee TN”

Reviewed 14 Dec 2013

We enjoyed a lovely stay in Red Oak Hollow. Hosts were friendly and helpful, the cottage was spacious, two bedrooms and an incredible bath, with large tub, and a full kitchen with all the comforts of home including board games, DVD's, a large library and plenty of publications with local info on restaurants, places to explore, great hikes and other adventures. The property adjacent to the cottage offered hiking trails, fishing, and a Frisbee Golf course, and plenty of privacy. We stayed during Thanksgiving and used it as a base for hiking the beautiful forests and trails in Lost Cove/Buggytop, Fiery Gizzard, Savage Gulf, the Sewanee Natural Bridge. The hosts recommended a wonderful restaurant in Monteagle, Dave's Modern Tavern, where we enjoyed a marvelous TDay dinner after a hike in an elegant setting. Can't wait to return to Red Oak Hollow and the Sewanee area.

Owner's reply: John, It's so nice to hear your kind words and best of all that you had a great time here and a special Thanksgiving. Love to have you and your family again. Sewanee is a warm knitted sweater in the cold world of everyday, that's why we love it so much too. Mesha

“A relaxing fall getaway”

Reviewed 6 Nov 2012

We stayed four days, three nights at Red Oak Hollow and were very impressed. The cabin is very clean, the property is incredible, and the property owners are very kind and straightforward to deal with. We brought all our own food and cooked there every night, using some of the herbs and produce from the garden right outside the back door. The bed is a sleep number and is EXTREMELY comfortable! We loved that we were able to bring our well mannered old dog and enjoy a vacation with him. If you are looking for a relaxing getaway, this is it!

Owner's reply: Thank you so much for the kind words. We are thrilled that you had the time to relax and Buddy had the time to run and swim.

“Quality and Cleanliness”

This was the second time I have stayed at the cottage. I will always stay there when I visit the Sewanee Summer Music Festival. I have diet restrictions and I love being able to cook my meals in a well-stocked kitchen. The views are beautiful. I sleep in dreamy linens. I prepare my meals and eat on fantastic cookware and dishes. My family loves the walks around the lake and through the forest. We even saw an armadillo on our walk this last time. Staying at the cottage is a home away from home mixed with a vacation experience. There is so much to do on the mountain.

Owner's reply: Jane, It's always a pleasure to see your delightful family again. The musical talents of your daughter, playing cello was an added treat for us. We are still looking for the armadillo trio you saw in our woods. We wonder if they were just here for the week-end. Please stay again when you plan to be back in Sewanee. Mesha and Tim

“Nothing Laborious about this Labor Day Weekend!”

Reviewed 8 Sep 2011

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Red Oak Hollow. The guest suites were handsomely furnished and very well equipped to meet our every need for cooking, eating, sleeping and most of all- relaxing! Our hosts were cordial and so helpful in giving us ideas about what to do in the area along with providing us with maps and brochures. We enjoyed walking on the property, sitting on the front porch surrounded by hummingbirds and a tour of the newest endeavor, mushroom farming. We even left with some tasty mushrooms for home! I would highly recommend staying at Red Oak Hollow.

“Best way to relax!”

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at Red Oak Hollow. The accomodations were perfect. The kitchen was outfitted with everything we needed, the bed was amazingly comfortable, the wildlife was fun to watch, and the hosts made several good suggestions for local dining and places to hike and shop in Sewanee. If are headed to Sewanee, or the University of the South, you should definitely check out Red Oak Hollow.

My father recently stayed at Red Oak Hollow and had a wonderful experience. His guestroom was spotless and extremely comfortable. The grounds at Red Oak Hollow are phenomenal and he had a view of two lakes from his guestroom. I would highly recommend Red Oak Hollow to anyone considering staying in the Sewanee area!

Thanks for helping to make our visit spectacular with wonderful accomadations. We'll be in touch before our next visit. Thanks. Noel and Cader

Just wanted to thank you for another wonderful stay; just wish it could have been longer. I love the beauty, peace and quiet there. The new room and patio are great ! I agree with all on your blog. I am really looking forward to our 2 stays in Oct and will surely miss them when Matt has graduated. But I will know where to stay when back in the area.
I just caught up with all on your blog and really enjoyed it. I like being able to see what is going on there and hearing what is new in the area. - Thanks again, Carol

This place is a godsend for Sewanee alums travelling with young kids. Mesha had a perfectly clean high chair and portable crib all set up for our baby when we arrived. We had all the amenities a young family could want -- a short hiking trail, two ponds with catfish and bass who like to be fed or caught and released by young fishermen, a well-stocked kitchen, washer and dryer, a separate TV / VCR combo with kid's movies in the bedroom with the bunkbeds, and a huge bathroom with soaking tub for mom to relax after chasing the kids around all day. Tim amd Mesha are wonderful hosts - friendly and welcoming to children as well as adults, and go out of their way to make sure their guests are comfortable. My 8 year old enjoyed our visit so much that he is already begging me to bring him back.
