Folly Beach, SC Travel Tips

Located just 12 miles south of Charleston, Folly Beach offers fun and sun on the Atlantic Coast. Known locally as the Edge of America, this resort town is a great getaway in South Carolina.

A Short History of Folly Beach

Folly Island was named for its dense undergrowth, known as folly in Old English. From the 17th century on, the area was inhabited by Native Americans, English settlers, and shipwreck survivors. Thousands of Union troops used the island as a base during the Civil War, and the area was briefly abandoned in the postwar years. Folly Beach’s proximity to Charleston led to its rediscovery in the early 20th century, when it grew to become the celebrated resort town that it is today.

What Folly Beach Does Best
