About Hilton Head

If you’re ready to kick back and relax, Hilton Head is the perfect destination for you. The pace is slower on this South Carolina island, but that doesn’t mean you’ll ever be bored. Don’t miss Hilton Head’s beautiful beaches, world-class golf, and family friendly activities.

A Short History of Hilton Head

One of the oldest settlements in the United States, Hilton Head Island first got its name in 1633 when Captain William Hilton named the island for himself. As home to geographically significant Fort Walker, the Hilton Head area rose to fame during the Civil War. Initially a Confederate station, the military fort was seized by thousands of Union troops in 1861 and played an important role in blockading Southern port cities.

Nearly 100 years later, Hilton Head began to develop its reputation as a Southern resort, thanks to the construction of Sea Pines Resort in 1956. Numerous resorts followed over the next several decades, attracting millions of vacationers to this beautiful barrier island.

What Hilton Head Does Best

Though it’s now a popular vacation destination, Hilton Head still excels at welcoming visitors to slow down and smell the roses. When you visit, take it slow and divide your time among the beaches, golf courses, and Broadway-quality performances. Take your pick of one of Hilton Head’s numerous vintage or contemporary vacation homes, and settle in for a relaxing weekend or a leisurely week.

Endless Beaches

Once you feel the ocean spray and soak in the sun, you’ll never want to leave Hilton Head’s gorgeous white sand beaches. Though the island’s beach is public, private developments often block access. Coligny Beach Park and Alder Lane Beach provide some of the best publicly accessible beach areas, where visitors can catch some rays and go for a swim. Both are also wheelchair-accessible.

World-Class Golf

With more than 20 world-class golf courses, amateur and experienced golfers alike will find the perfect green in Hilton Head. Play 18 holes among palmettos and sand dunes at Palmetto Dunes, take on one of three 9-hole courses lined with majestic oak trees at Shipyard Golf Club, or explore one of the dozens of other golf courses in the area.

Family Friendly Activities

Hilton Head is the ideal place for a family vacation, where you can keep everyone busy with activities that range from sports to spas. Play a round of mini golf, wow the ...
