Description from owner

The "Starboard Cottage"

We will not be renting Starboard for the summer of 2017. We have decided to make some changes. Thank you to everyone who has visited us at Starboard and we look forward to meeting again.

This cottage sits right on the ocean's edge with panoramic views. Drink your morning coffee watching the sunrise on the oceanfront deck. Spend your days exploring sea life among the rocks, watching the seals and seabirds, walking in the woods, or watching the lobster boats out front. Bring your kayak to launch from our small pebble beach right out front. The clear night sky is filled with stars close enough to touch. Fall asleep listening to the water lap at the shore. Antiquing, fine dining, museums, hiking and golf are just a sample of many ways to spend the day - if you can tear yourself away.

The Starboard Cottage is one side of a duplex (see photos). The back entry alcove, is the only common walls. This cottage is separate except for that entryway on the driveway side of the property. The Starboard cottage has two bedrooms and 1 1/2 bathrooms. The master bedroom on upstairs has a king-sized bed, full bathroom and overlooks the ocean. On the main level you'll find a bedroom great for children, with a 1 jr. size bed (I'm working on changing this when the right idea hits) and a twin bed. There is half bathroom on this level. The sofa pulls out to a Queen sleeper. This cottage is fully outfitted, including linens, towels, dishwasher, microwave, washer and dryer, and fireplace, includes cable television and wireless internet access.

Beds: 1 King Bed, 2 Twin Beds, 1 Sofa Bed

About the area

Spruce Head is a small lobster-fishing village on Penobscot Bay in midcoast Maine. The nearest city is Rockland, about ten minutes away. There is a small airport in Owls Head with commercial flights to Boston and facilities for private aircraft. Nearby Thomaston, Rockport and Camden are beautiful towns with small shops and galleries. Lighthouses, museums, restaurants, art galleries, numerous summer festivals, hiking, fishing, shopping, day cruises and more are all available within a half-hour drive. And of course, there is lobster to eat everywhere. Or, even better, buy it fresh and bring it back to enjoy on your own deck, taking in the view.

“Beautiful place with wonderful hospitality”

Reviewed 29 Sep 2016

We can only HIGHLY recommend this place and the hosts. Clean, beautifully done with nice personal touch for the guests. Not to include the serenity and view of the sea and sunrise. Well behave pets are also welcome, which is nice to allow them to join their family on vacation. A place we intend to return!

Owner's reply: Danielle, I'm so glad you enjoyed Starboard Cottage. We enjoyed having you and your dogs. They were very sweet. Everyone does so well with a few dogs around, it's great that we can share our cottages with our pets, too. I'm glad you were able to get out and explore all the surrounding spots. We hope to see you again. Thank you. Patty and Paul

“Serenity, Beauty, Comfort and Fun”

Reviewed 14 Sep 2016

Everything about the Starboard Cottage was beyond my expectations, and having the friendly owners next door made the experience even better because they could answer every question I had about the area. The location is quiet but not isolated, and the owners and neighbors welcomed my traveling companion, a 60 pound retriever. Sited right on the water, the rhythm of the tides coming and going framed the pace of life, and my dog loved swimming in the cold, clear Atlantic waters. The ocean here is calmed by the sheltering islands, and there are many varieties of waterbirds feeding at low tide. The intensity of the smells of the ocean and wild roses were wonderful. Sunrises were framed in the east-facing windows, and there was an endless variety of pre-dawn colors, clouds, fog banks and shimmering moon rises. The private deck had lovely soft lighting at night. Sharp knives in a spotless kitchen are my measure of luxury, as are nice bed and bath linens: Starboard Cottage had both. In the peak of summer heat, cool breezes blew through the cottage, and the upstairs bedroom had an AC option (I never needed it). I especially enjoyed the "Free First Friday" at Rockland's art museums and galleries, and enjoyed visiting the Rockland Historical Society. The ferry ride to Monhegan Island from Port Clyde was fun, and McLoon's Lobster Shack is nearby. I also did day trips to Acadia National Park and visited a college friend in New Hampshire - all do-able from this location. I really enjoyed staying at Starboard Cottage where I also did some sketching (several tables to lay out my art supplies), internet research (good WiFi) and reading (comfy furniture).

Owner's reply: Barbara, We appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences while staying at our Starboard Cottage. It's so nice to hear what made your vacation unique and enjoyable. We try very hard to be able to think of what might make the stay better before you even know you need it! We love our spot and are so happy we could share it with you and Lulu. Take care and I hope to see you next summer. Thank you. Patty and Paul

“Wonderfully peaceful place on the ocean”

Reviewed 28 Jun 2016

The cottage itself is comfortable and well equipped, and Patty and Paul are great hosts who helped out whenever we wanted something, but also let us enjoy quiet, sunny hours out on the deck by ourselves. The location is fantastic, very close to the water and just a few minutes away from Rockland with its great museums, galleries, restaurants, boat tours etc. Walking the lanes of Spruce Head was fun, and the lobster shack McLoons is simply the best. We loved watching the osprey catch fish right in front of the cottage, the seal sunbathing on the little peninsula across from the cottage, and all the lobster boats out in the bay. Hiking in the area makes for a great experience, too, since there are so many hills that are easy to hike and that offer fantastic views.

Owner's reply: Anne, Thank you for the wonderful review of our Starboard Cottage. I'm so glad you had a peaceful stay and enjoyed everything that we have to offer. I hope you will be able to return some day in the future when you travel to the U.S. again. I look forward to that day. We loved having you and your family with us. Please keep in touch. Patty and Paul

“Great view, comfortable cottage, wonderful”

Reviewed 10 Jun 2014

My husband and I just got back from two weeks at Starboard Cottage and already can't wait for next year! The view is incomparable - gorgeous no matter the weather. The cabin is tidy and cozy, with an electric fireplace (which came in handy in May!), all the necessaries in the kitchen, puzzles for rainy days, and fabulous double sliding doors that give you a full wall of ocean view. Patty and Paul are delightful! They're friendly and welcoming, but also gave us plenty of space and made us feel right at home. We brought our two dogs, who loved running on the beach and hiking in nearby Camden Hills State Park. Being able to bring the dogs was so lovely and made our stay that much more homey and cozy. South Thomaston, Owl's Head, Rockland, and Camden have a lot to offer in terms of restaurants, activities, and lovely spots to check out. But the cottage is so special, it's hard to find the motivation to leave for the day. This is a perfect spot for a vacation. I almost don't want to post this review because I don't want to compete with other people for time next year!

Owner's reply: Molly and Garrett, It was a pleasure having you at our cottages for the two weeks. We had a good systems with all the "kids" (our dogs) wanting to use the beach. I'm glad you found the Rockland area so enjoyable. Thank you for all the wonderful comments about our cottage and our view. We love it, too. I hope you and your family will return next season. Have a great year and again, thank you. Patty and Paul

“Another Fantastic Spruce Head Vacation”

Reviewed 1 Jan 2014

My husband, baby, and I stayed at the Starboard cottage for a week last summer. Clean, lovely view (especially the panoramic view stepping out of the shower upstairs), and nicely kept grounds. Although the downstairs bedroom is small, it was fine for my in-laws, and later in the week for my cousins, to stay in. Who needs a luxurious bedroom when you have a location like this? I spent my childhood summers in the small cottage on the other side of Lighthouse cottage. My family still owns it, and I love the location, but we wanted something more modern (plumbed) this time around. Perfect location to use the shared beach, bike and walk to my favorite childhood spots nearby, and enjoy being with my family who was concurrently staying at the family cottage. Patty and Paul were more than just owners - I'd call them hosts as needed, lending us cooking equipment and a hand now and then. Overall, a wonderful vacation. We'll be back to Cottage Lane - sooner, not later, this time!

Owner's reply: Amy, Thank you very much for the wonderful comments. We feel the same way about the view. Cottage Lane is a hidden gem in Maine. Because of your history, you pointed out wild blueberries we didn't know we had! We are looking forward to your return and can't wait to see how the baby has grown! Thank you. Patty

“Perfect Mid Coast Getaway Location!”

Reviewed 14 Sep 2013

My husband and I stayed at Starboard cottage first two weeks in Sept and just left today. It was not easy leaving! The cottage is perfect, CLEAN and a great location for mid coast activities! Lobster shacks near by, wildlife activity to observe from the deck, beautiful sunsets, and sunrises if you dare to get up that early! Patty and Paul ( owners) were so welcoming and friendly and made sure we had everything to make our stay comfortable. We come to Maine every summer and we will for sure stay here again! 10 Minutes from Rockland, 20 minutes from Camden, less than 1 hour to Boothbay......just a perfect and private location for all mid coast exploring! Great restaurants nearby, hiking, great farmers market, lighthouses, windjammer cruises....what more can I say except THANK YOU Patty and Paul for a delightful stay. Our grandkids also came for a few days and many memories were made! We WILL be back!! Love the cottage!

“The PERFECT vacation cottage!”

Reviewed 5 Aug 2013

Words can't express how beautiful the cottage and view are! I have stayed many times in Maine and the Starboard cottage is the most charming and comfortable. The ocean is literally right a outside the door. We watched bald eagles feed their young right from our deck! Patty and her family made us feel so welcome. We also loved Crescent Beach, the Owls Head General Store, the fabulous lobster everywhere. Rockland and Camden are charming, and we enjoyed a day trip to Acadia. Too many fun things to list! Can't wait o return!

Owner's reply: Sarah, Thank you so much for the great impression of Starboard Cottage. We enjoyed having you and meeting your family. We look forward to your return. Patty

“Beautiful View”

Reviewed 17 Sep 2012

We enjoyed our week long stay in this quaint cottage. The view from the living/dining and deck was just breath taking. The peaceful area was just what we needed. The surrounding area supplied numerous day trips that left us feeling like we had experienced the true nature of the Maine experience. Our dinner at Contes was the highlight of our visit. Seafood meals served in skillets and pie plates surpassed our expectation and filled us with local fare. We would definately recommend this property.

Owner's reply: Thank you so much for taking the time to review our cottage. I'm glad your stay was peaceful. Patty
