About the area

Spruce Head is a small lobster-fishing village on Penobscot Bay in midcoast Maine. The nearest city is Rockland, about ten minutes away. There is a small airport in Owls Head with commercial flights to Boston and facilities for private aircraft. Nearby Thomaston, Rockport and Camden are beautiful towns with small shops and galleries. Lighthouses, museums, restaurants, art galleries, numerous summer festivals, hiking, fishing, shopping, day cruises and more are all available within a half-hour drive. And of course, there is lobster to eat everywhere. Or, even better, buy it fresh and bring it back to enjoy on your own deck, taking in the view.

“Wonderful Ocean View Cottage”

Reviewed 8 Jun 2015

This is not just a "cottage", it is a very comfortable home. It is fully furnished and equipped, so it has everything you need to enjoy your stay and the ocean view is fabulous with the shoreline and islands. It is very close to Rockland and Camden, which have great harbors, restaurants and things to do. Unfortunately we missed a few sunrises from the beautiful deck because of cloud cover, rain and cold some days, but the view from inside with the two sliding glass door walls overlooking the deck and ocean is just as good. We have stayed in several cottages in Maine before, but this was by far the best one.

“Clean, Quiet, Relaxing and Penobscot Bay views”

Reviewed 20 Sep 2014

What a beautiful location. We stayed in the Gray Cottage for the week after Labor Day Weekend and found it very clean, fully equipped and with great bayside views. Waking early to watch the sunrise off the deck with morning coffee was especially enjoyable as was the rest of the Sprucehead Island, Rockland and Port Clyde area. The Baines family was very hospitable and made sure we were satisfied with the accommodations. A week goes by pretty quick and we wished that we could have stayed for two! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing vacation getaway and loves being on the ocean's edge. Jan and Bob - thank you! Jamie E.

“Wonderful and Relaxing”

Reviewed 1 Sep 2014

My spouse and I spent the most wonderful week there in July. We loved the place. I found it so relaxing that I didn't want to leave it and we spent most of the week sitting on the porch or inside playing cards. If you're looking for a place to relax and enjoy the beauty of Maine, you can't go wrong with this cottage. It was our best Maine vacation yet. The people that rent the cottage were wonderful and it is well worth the price. It's also close to Rockland which was voted one of the best towns in America this year.

Owner's reply: Thank you Georgia. We enjoyed having you and hope to see you again!

“Tranquil Cottage, Perfectly Situated”

Reviewed 29 Aug 2014

When we arrived at the Gray Cottage on Saturday evening, the water was like glass and there was hardly a sound. There are few places left in the world that are so peaceful. We thought we would miss the sound of the crashing waves, but the breathtaking sunrises over Vinalhaven, the views of the barrier islands, the lobster and sailboat activity, the call of the loons, the gentle lapping of the waves at high tide, and even the planes flying to and from Knox County Regional Airport very much grew on us as the week went on. We were even treated to a spectacular rainbow right from our deck on Sunday evening. The proximity to Rockland, Tenants Harbor, Port Clyde (and the beautiful Marshall Point Lighthouse), and the bucolic Union countryside made this a perfect vacation spot. This area is also chock-full of great lobster eateries. Our favorite was McLoon's, but we also tried the lobster roll at The Gig, Miller's Lobster Co., and Dip Net in Port Clyde. We highly recommend dining at The Craignair Inn and Restaurant for a fine meal and stunning water views. (A fun find for us after visiting the Owls Head Lighthouse was lunch at the Jetport Cafe and a visit to the Blue Yonder gift shop at the Knox County Regional Airport; it reminded us of the TV show 'Wings'.) The Gray Cottage is very comfortable, perfectly situated, and had everything we needed (including good Internet access). The view from the upstairs bedroom is picture perfect! We enjoyed seeing how the light continually changes over the water throughout the day. Sue and Bob Baines, who live nearby, were very nice and super helpful. We also enjoyed meeting our neighbors on both sides; the cottages are situated in such a way that privacy was not an issue. We particularly hit it off with the owners of the red cottages next door. We look forward to returning to the Gray Cottage for future Maine vacations!

“Amazing views!”

Spectacular ocean views; great sunrise/sunsets and a great porch to just sit back and take it all in. Special treat when the low tide is synchronized with the sunrise; many birds come to feed and you just can't ignore the beautiful sights and sounds of them all. I was up at 5 am almost every day to see it! Cottage was very nice, spacious and clean. Well taken care of. Included everything so you just needed to bring yourself and food. Close proximity to other cottages, but some privacy with existing landscaping. Nice neighbors. Owners was there to greet us; very nice and very responsive to any inquiries. Our last name was written on a small chalkboard near the front door when we arrived. Very helpful as we arrived late at night and a nice touch. Close to neighboring town- Rockland, Rockport, Camden and Port Clyde are are short drive away. We explored a bit and found plenty to see (shopping, state parks, wineries, lobster companies, restaurants, lighthouses, boat tours) all within 15 miles of the cottage; however getting back to sit on that porch was always on our minds. :) Great place to visit, not touristy at all. A great Maine experience and would definitely return to the Gray Cottage!

Owner's reply: Thanks Carolyn. We love it too. Hope you come back again!

“True Maine”

Reviewed 8 Aug 2013

Maine need offer no more than that available at Gray Cottage. We spent hours, as did our kind and gracious neighbors, simply enjoying the view from the deck. The activity of the various ships, the lobster men in their boats, the wildlife including the nesting eagles, and the sea offered us endless entertainment. We loved our walks, as did our dogs. The beauty of the forrest floor kept them sniffing and searching and me admiring the wild blueberries and other beautiful wildflowers, bright red berries, and evergreen trees. The lobsters were delicious whether we bought them home to cook or ate out in nearby restaurants. The state is beautiful as are the people who live there.

Owner's reply: We are so glad that you enjoyed our piece of Maine. We love it also and hope you will return!

“Vacation”

Reviewed 18 Jul 2013

The cottage was very nice. Plenty of room for the six of us. The owners were available for questions about anything, and we're very nice. The location was close enough for day trips.

Owner's reply: I'm so glad you enjoyed your vacation, Mary. Hope to see you again.

“Wonderful vacation at the Gray Cottage”

Reviewed 17 Oct 2012

This was our second year, vacationing at the Gray Cottage. It just can't get any better than this! The views are spectacular! The sunrises are beautiful. We were lucky enough to be there when the moon was full. It was beautiful to see the moon reflecting on the water..like a postcard photo. We love watching the Ospreys that come everyday and fish right in front of the cottage. They have a nest close by so we could see them feed the babies. We are able to bring our dogs too, which is great for us. The "take out" lobster pound is only a half mile away so you can call in your order and have lobster at the cottage while you enjoy the view. It's just a wonderful place to stay and enjoy the beauty of Maine.

“What a realxing vacation”

Reviewed 23 Jul 2012

This was a great experience. Lots of space in and around the house, beautiful surroundings, quiet mornings watching the sunrise from the deck with coffee. The house is great, has everything you need. neighbors and owners are really nice and helpful. We even got to eat fresh lobsters, what a treat. We can only recommend this place. We will go back for sure. Swimming was good for us, a little chilly but no problem. The town is close to go for movies, ice cream and souvenir shopping. The week just pasted to quickly. Proce is fair for what you get.

Owner's reply: Thanks Beate. So wonderful to meet you and your family! Hope to see you again next year.

Loved our cottage with the most gorgeous view. My favorite spot was in the "reading room". We started our week off with great weather and the Maine Lobster Festival. Mid-week we made the trip to Acadia National Park - spectacular and worth the drive. Ate at Watermans and The Happy Clam (yum!), visited Owls Head Light, Rockland Breakwater, Marshall Point and Pemaquid Light and still managed to get two puzzles done!
