Description from owner

Rinn Ná Mara is an absolutely charming property nestled right on the rocks of the Mussel Ridge Channel which allows one to enjoy all the boating activity in complete privacy. It is truly spectacular inside and out. The house faces due South and is located on a granite ledge thirty-five feet from the high tide line. Residents are always within earshot of the gentle sound of waves.

The architectural design was by Chris Glass and the Japanese garden was designed and installed by Masahiko Seko. The inside is reproduction Shaker furniture, cabinets and trim. All of the woodwork has been antiqued with a rubbed, crackle finish. The floors are natural fired ceramic. The deck is solid teak. Antique New England quilts are featured throughout.

The kitchen was made by William Ohs. It features a professional Russel gas stove and grill, a Miele silent dishwasher, a Miele stove, a Sharp microwave convection oven, solid granite work surfaces and a breakfast bar. A washer/ dryer is also provided.

Both bathrooms feature showers and whirlpool bathtubs with in-line heaters. The master bathroom also has a steam room/shower. All major rooms have ceiling fans and are fitted with telephone/intercom and fax/modem connections. The house has a comprehensive security system and a DSS satellite system is installed as well. The house is completely winterized and uses radiant in-floor heating. A wood burning stove is located in the living room area.

Getting here

Driving Directions to Rinn Ná Mara Driving (estimated driving time 3.5 - 4 hours from Boston) Set Odometer to 0. Take Interstate 95 North through Massachusetts and New Hampshire to Maine. In Maine: Follow route 95 to Exit 44 (It's marked Portland and is approximately 100 miles North of Boston). This will put you on route 295. Reset your odometer to 0 as you make this exit. Note: distances based on mileage are approximate. Odometers vary! Continue on 295 until you reach Exit 28 (Brunswick). This will place you on Route 1 North. NOTE: Maine police take speeding very seriously! Follow Route 1 North for approximately 1¼ hours (70 miles) until you come to the town of Thomaston. Continue through Thomaston until you see a sign indicating Route 131 South (to the right). Turn right and set your odometer to 0 again as you do so. Follow Route 131 for about 1.6 miles to Westbrook Street. The street sign is always being knocked down so look for the first paved road on your left. Tip. Watch for the wooden sign that says “Off” or “New Island" or "Sea Store” or "Mussel Ridge Market" on the right hand side of the road just before you come to the intersection of Westbrook. Turn left on Westbrook and continue 1.8 miles until you come to a Stop sign. Turn right, and set your odometer to 0 again. You are now on route 73 South. Drive exactly 3.0 miles (again, watch for the sign that reads “Off”, “New Island", "Sea Store” or "Mussel Ridge Market"). Turn left onto Island Road (Fire Road 300 (FR300)). "Mussel Ridge Market” will be immediately on your left. From here you will arrive in less than 5 minutes at Rinn Ná Mara - the home of Terry and Renee Westmacott on Spruce Head Island in South Thomaston. Enjoy your stay!

The house itself is an outstanding feat of architecture, landscape excellence and fine finishes.. I am not sure that most people could even appreciate the attention to detail. The house was as clean as a hospital. The views were the best we have ever experienced in Maine. The owners are very caring and checked that we were happy and wanted to know if we needed anything throughout our stay. We cannot wait to return

“Perfect Retreat!”

Reviewed 26 Jun 2014

Our family of 6 enjoyed every minute of our stay here. The view is spectacular and varied, looking out to islands, outcroppings, and open ocean. We enjoyed watching lobster boats, sail boats, and kayakers. The house is beautiful and comfortable. The gourmet kitchen has everything you need and more. This is a perfect location with so much to see and do close by. The highlight of our trip to Maine was hiking (with care) on the rocks around the island, watching the sea, and finding creatures in the tidal pools. I don't think there is a better view than the one from this house. With it's southern exposure we enjoyed the sun from sunrise to sunset. It was breathtaking! The owners Renee and Terry were wonderful as well. They even set up one of the bedrooms to accommodate our kids before our arrival, and made sure we had everything we needed. It really is a spectacular oceanfront retreat!

Fell in love ..... with the panoramic views of the ocean from every room in the perfectly and beautifully decorated house. All the amenities you could possibly want or need.Sitting outside on the deck each morning sipping coffee while watching the lobstermen was an absolute delight. This property is truly a GEM!! Someone physically challenged may find it difficult maneuvering the steps to the house; although it is breathtakingly beautiful it can be a problem for some. Would return to this property in a heartbeat!!!

Owner's reply: Thank you, Linda. We certainly could not have asked for kinder comments and just wanted to add that, although the current pictures are not showing it, we have installed a handrail that runs from the top of the stairs/the parking area all the way to the house to provide some additional support if needed.

“Very quiet and scenic”

Reviewed 26 Aug 2012

The house is nicely appointed - we did not cook or have visitors, but there were enough pots and pans and dishes and cutlery to do so - and very clean. The setting is quiet/secluded with fantastic views of the bay - perfect for "getting away from it all". We also enjoyed the landscaping, which is exotic yet works perfectly in the setting.

“Wonderful home and site”
