My mom and I stayed at Karoll and Nick's Reefview Apartments. It was paradise. Cades Reef is a one minute walk away. Nearby Turner Beach is a 5 minute drive - it's close enough to walk to - which I did everyday (and when I was hungry I'd pick a mango along the way!) If you like snorkelling and beachcombing this is truly the place for you. Everyday that I was there I had miles of beach - often all to myself! It was safe, beautiful and warm. When I snorkelled I was at times literally surrounded by THOUSANDS of fish in every direction. They even jumped right out of the water in front of me. The water was as clear as the air - you could see the fish from above! The apartments are beautiful, comfortable and well maintained. The location is in a small fishing village. There are a few local, rustic shops and a bakery in walking distance. More commercialized resorts and towns are a short car or bus ride away. You can go to the historic parks and tourist areas - or take in the historic sites/relics along the beaches or the highway drives. St. John's is a short drive away and offers excellent restaurants, market shopping, and historic sites. Taking the bus is easy, economical and a great way to get around. Karoll was a wonderful host and tour guide. She met us at the airport, took us to get some start up groceries, and helped us get our bearings. She has a real heart for Antigua, it's people and history and their ecosystem. She took us to some amazing places and also set us up so that we could go exploring on our own. I cried when I left! Both my mom and I can't wait to go back! Thank you Karoll and Nick for sharing so much with us!

Owner's reply:

Hi Cynthia,
It must be starting to get colder in Canada now ~ Time to come back for more snorkeling fun and visit all your marine buddies and take some more beach walks. Keeshie the scarlet macaw misses you too. Not many people have such a natural affinity with parrots. Did you make your jewelry out of all the beach treasure you found. Come back soon we need to go and visit the rasta man in the pineapple plantation again. Thank you for your lovely review which reflects what we offer here.

Just returned home to Canada from a marvelous 2 week, one of a kind, authentic Antiguan holiday at Karoll and Nicks Reefview apartments. My wife and I stayed in the gardenview (lower-level) apartment, 1 of 3 comfortably decorated, well equipped units set in a beautifully maintained lush tropical garden, 100 meters from the sea. The apartment is spacious and well maintained, and thoughtfully stocked with all the neccessities for a relaxing beach vacation, including superior quality towels, sheets and pillows, paper products and beach neccessities like beach chairs and towels, coolers, etc...the kitchen had nice quality pots and pans, matching sets of dishes, cutlery, plates etc...toaster, microwave, stove fridge-all in great working order. There were even basic kitchen supplies like some spices, sugar, tea, aluminim foil etc. Karoll picked us up at the airport as planned and brought us first to the large grocery store (Epicurean) in St. Johns so we could stock up on drinks, snacks etc., then on the 30 minute drive to Reefview she filled us in on life on the island with tons of great suggestions of things to do. My main advice to futur visitors is do whatever Karrol says. Her tips and guidance were invaluable and helped make our 2 weeks unforgettable. Karoll reccomended a half dozen great beaches all within 5-10 minutes drive, and also suggested a few further away that were worth the drive: Half Moon Bay was one such outstanding reccomendation, She also suggested we try Smiling Harry for lunch while we were there, where we had the best Chicken Roti I have ever had, and to make sure to take a long walk to the far end of the beach and make our way over the rock shelf to the next outstanding beach....need I say more, Karrol knows the island and does not steer you wrong. She also arranged a car for us which was delivered to the apartment as planned and at a substantial savings to what was offered at the airport. we kept the car the first week and then stayed more local week 2, which worked well for us. The local bus service is just a few steps from the apartment and for $1 you can get anywhere on the island. There are some great local restaurants (Chappies was excellent) walking distance where we enjoyed local fresh fish dinners for about $15/person. Reefviews beach is a must for snorkelers, located 100 meters from the property, Nick and Karoll have a picnic table and covered sit-out on the beach which is virtually private with wonderful views. Owner's reply:

Hi Elia & Jonathan,
Thankou for taking the time to write such a thoughtful and kind review of your stay with us down on the South Coast. We really enjoyed your company and the fun times we all shared over dinners and cocktails whilst you were here.
I am so glad you enjoyed our hidden virtually private beach & the coconut thatched cabana and good snorkeling (well done Elia). I hope you are both feeling refreshed and relaxed after your 2 weeks of sunshine & sunsets down by the sea.........

In the twelve years since we last visited Antigua it has become much more developed. These days the best place to stay has to be the South West in general, and Reef View in particular. Firstly, Cades Bay itself, a two minute walk from Reef View, is a delightful, almost always deserted long beach - home to an easily reached fish-filled reef and the best sunsets anywhere. On busy days you may have to share it with a local fisherman looking for octopus, but that apart it will be you, the fish, the pelicans, egrets and heron. Frequent, cheap and friendly buses can take you the short hop North to fabulous deep, long, white sand beaches which you often get pretty much to yourself : Turner's, Darkwood and Ffreys, - each with a great bar/restaurant tucked away. More restaurants and a big supermarket are just up the road at Jolly Harbour. Best of all, Nick and Karoll are always on hand to give you great advice on how to get the most out of the island, and that includes their brilliant snorkelling and fishing trips aboard the Little Mermaid. We don't fish, but we can say that in all our snorkelling experiences, across many years and many locations, this is right at the TOP of the list. They don't just take you there, they join you to guide you personally through the adventure, drawing upon their immense experience of and enthusiasm for the reef. So you can see turtles, stingrays, eagle rays, barracuda, lobsters, octopus - even nurse and reef sharks (don't worry, they don't bite, but they are pretty impressive) - plus, of course, the thousands of beautiful tropical fish that throng the reef. We felt at home right away - the first night supper with Nick & Karoll, plus being adopted by their dogs saw to that! The rooms are fresh and airy, the sunsets sensational, the rum punches suitably relaxing (!) - we could not have enjoyed ourself more. I unhesitatingly recommend Reef View to anyone who seeks out the sort of gentle, nature-filled holidays we do.

My family of 4 stayed over Easter 2010 in the garden appartment. Karroll met us at the airport and gave us a very welcome cold bottle of water! We drove home the scenic route, stopping to buy delicious local fruit on the way. There is so many positive things to say! Fabulous welcome dinner, delicious punch, amazing island knowledge, amazing door to door car rental service! The best snorkelling experience....and what can we say about the pets, they made my daughters holidays( mine too actually, every morning nothing better to wake up then a stroll and a swim along cades bay with the pups & the cat comes too!!) strolling through the village to buy freshly baked bread from the wood fired ovens.....trying not to eat it until getting home! Staying in a local setting you get a real feel of the real Antigua. Rather than the glossy all inclusive resort, where you never leave the hotel. You must eat at Dennis's on a sunday - suckling pig for lunch - delicious and fabulous goat curry. We will definately be back to Reef view ...thanks so much to Karroll and Nick, who trulely love this Island and all its nature.

The perfect place to chill

Having just returned from two weeks at the Reefview Apartments in Antigua, I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone. From the minute we arrived I knew we had picked the perfect place. Karroll met us at the airport and drove us back to apartment, all the while pointing out places of interest, giving us tips and advice for our stay and providing us with refreshing ice cold drinks which was really appreciated. I couldn't have been happier with the beautiful spacious apartment which provided everything we required. I was amazed at the level of thought that had gone into providing the little things that would be useful - a hairdryer (with diffuser!), ample fluffy soft towels for beach and bath, mosquito repellents (candles and plug in), bookshelves with an assortment of books, reading material and board games (in case we got bored I suppose!!!). Not much chance of that though - the view from the balcony was lovely - you could see and hear the sea and the lovely comfy chairs made it the perfect place to relax in the morning with a cup of tea and evening with a rum punch or two. There were beach mats, beach chairs & cooler ice boxes available for picnics on the beach which we made good use of and ample information on places to go, where and what to eat, local customs and transport. Watch the fabulous sunsets (great views from the beach & patio), tour the Island there is a perfect view round every corner, walk to the village and chat to the extremely friendly local people. Even if you don't have a car (although I would thoroughly recommend that you do - only to ensure you can see the all of the island - not because it is necessary) the buses are fun, cheap and frequent and will stop wherever you are and not only at bus stops. In fact everyone we met across the island was friendly and helpful), chill out on what feels like your own private beach, relax in the comfortable spacious apartment, enjoy the warmth and the refreshing breezes. Nick and Karroll were the perfect hosts - informative, helpful, warm and very friendly, it was a pleasure to meet them they went out of their way to ensure our holiday was perfect in every way. From the minute we booked at the Reefview, I was impressed by Karroll's helpfulness, the information she provided for us before we arrived and her help in arranging our few days in Monseratt. No one made us feel that we had to 'do' anything and we had what we wanted and needed which was a perfectly chilled, relaxing holiday in a perfect place.

I've just realised I've made a slight error as we stayed in the Garden Apartment on ground level, not the Penthouse, but I'm sure the review covers both. I don't want to have to re-write all this !! I'm sure you will find a large slice of paradise if you stay here. The island is truly beautiful with gorgeous beaches, warm natured locals, and a feeling of peace and tranquility. (And safety ) The apartment has all one needs and is set in a perfect location, away from the tourists but not remote. All the best beaches and activities are within a few miles. The owners, Nick and Karoll live next door and are always ready to offer help and advise without ever intruding on ones privacy. They put their heart and soul into ensuring their guests are happy. Nick has a comprehensive knowledge of all the local natural history, especially sealife and will answer all your questions with a passion. You will find your mind enriched. A "must do" is to go snorkeling with Nick. He doesn't just drop you over the best coral reef, but tailors the whole trip to your exact requirements, going out of his way to totally ensure your enjoyment. Other "must do's" : Sunset and dinner at OJ's Beach Bar, especially on a Friday or Sunday when a great jazz duo play. Early morning breakfast on the veranda surrounded by hummingbirds and the heady smells of the flowers. Steel band and barbecue party at Shirley Heights on Sunday evenings. Beachcombing on the beach by the apartment. Saturday take-away lunch from Goldies. She has a little stall in the village and serves up delicious "conch water" ( an aromatic conch soup ) and chicken wings. The cost is just pennies. Drink the local rum punches, but limit yourself to two. Three and you are anaesthetized. Try the goat curry at Dennis's and enjoy a spectacular view across the bay. Hire a 4x4. One can get about by bus but there is so much to see and do on this island one really needs a vehicle. Go to the "marina" almost next door and buy fresh caught fish and you can barbecue them back at the apartment. A note for guests coming from UK or Europe-- many commodities are quite expensive here due to them having to be imported, but drinks and eating out are cheaper than back home. If we can, we'll be back next year. .

My husband stayed in the Garden Apartment for eight nights in late November/early December 2009. The apartment is very well equipped and decorated in a simple but comfortable style. We loved having breakfast on the veranda watching the hummingbirds and bananaquits feeding on the Hibiscus and Bougainvillea. The fans in the lounge and bedroom helped to cool down the apartment. We had all we need to make simple meals (too hot to spend lots of time by the cooker) and there were games and books in the apartment (the US version of Trivial Pursuit caused us a few headaches), which we enjoyed while sitting on the veranda enjoying the local rum in the evenings. Nick and Karoll were very welcoming and helpful. We had spent the previous week sailing around the British Virgin Islands, and I had been badly bitten by the mosquitoes. When Karoll collected us from the airport, she very kindly made a detour, despite the Friday evening rush hour, to a pharmacy so I could get some much needed medication. When we arrived at the apartment Nick had delicious Rum Punch waiting for us, followed by a fabulous BBQ, and the next morning Karoll showed us around the beautiful gardens, and gave us some top tips on where to eat, drink and shop around the island. As we had spent quite a lot the previous week, we didn't really do any trips or tours, just hired a car and visited lots of beaches. Nick and Karoll were happy to advise us on activities on the islands, but weren't at all pushing us to buy expensive trips with them or other operators. Karoll and Nick deserve a special thank you for arranging an appointment with a consultant doctor at a couple of hours notice, when Stephen developed severe earache during our last night in the apartment. Fortunately he gave him the all clear to fly, although I'm sure Stephen would have loved to stay a little longer. This a great spot for peace and quiet, relaxing and enjoying the wildlife. There are lots of great beaches close by, as well as good restaurants to eat in, but not much in the way of nightlife, so this is not the place for those who want to party. But if you want to see more of the real Antigua, this is a great place to base yourself.

We just returned home from our fabulous stay at Reefview. Nick & Karoll are excellent hosts. We were married while on Antigua and we could not have done it without Karoll. She knows everyone on the island and she always knew who to contact for what we wanted. We had an intimate sunset beach wedding - just what we wanted. With Nick & Karoll as our witnesses. Not only did Karoll assist with the wedding arrangements but she arranged our day trip to Barbuda, she had someone meet us at the airport with a car and map, then we had a 'Thanksgiving' lobster dinner on the beach for just the two of us. We did not want to come home.

Delightful Stay at Reefview Apartments!

My boyfriend and I stayed at Nick and Karoll's fabulous vacation compound for a full week and couldn't have been happier with the accomodations. We had our own private courtyard and the cutest of cottages to relax in when we weren't snorkling, fishing off the oceanfront within a few yards of the house, or drinking wadadlis. Karoll and Nick are very gracious hosts and quite knowledgeble about just about everything on the island. We would wholeheartedly recommend a stay at the Reefview to any of our friends. Experience the real Antigua

After sailing for the week before our arrival , Karoll picked us up from Falmouth Harbour and then we had a wonderful running commentary / tour as she brought us to her wonderful home. Pointing out many must sees on the way. The Rum cocktail on our arrival was certainly a real treat. We were in the Penthouse, light airy and with fabulous views across Cades Reef (we loved watching the yachts racing in front of us during the week, as it was Antigua Sailing week). We had everything we could have wanted and more in the apartment. With the sound of the sea to wake up to. In our rush to escape on our holiday we had completely forgotten driving licenses - not a worry as the frequent local buses made our days out easy and cheap to get around. Karroll was also kind enough to offer us a lift when she went to the supermarket. We loved walking down to the beach in from of the house, seeing pelicans and ospreys catching fish. A beautiful wild and empty stretch of coastline. The fabulous picture postcard beaches were just a short trip by bus - white sands, bars and restaurants and turquoise seas. Even in walking distance if you are particularly keen! Our one regret was that we only had a week here so didn't have time to try out all the beaches and places to eat that were available!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the fun things to do nearby?
A: Definitely the serenity of being in the Cades Bay Marine Reserve ~ long quiet nature walks and beach combing - excellent snorkeling, turtles, eagle rays, lobsters, starfish etc - fab fishing for permit, jacks, snapper, grouper, bonefish (Nick is also a fly fishing guide) ~ chilling on the ReefView private cabana just 2 feet from the Caribbean sea with a cooler full of refreshments and watching all the pelicans, herons, osprey, whistling ducks fly overhead and the yachts sailing by CADES REEF.
Q: What makes our three vacation homes so special?
A: They all have sea views but two have stunning panoramic vistas as they are higher on 2nd floor. They are all fully loaded just like you would want your own holiday home to be. Beautiful furnishings and all the comforts from home. Everything you could possibly need even down to those forgotten sunglasses or wide brimmed hat!
We provide big thick fluffy beach towels and ice coolers with ice blocks, portable beach chairs for your adventurous days further afield. Posturepedic mattresses, quiet efficient ceiling fans, egyptian cotton sheets, A/C should you need it, complimentary high speed internet, privacy and 24hr concierge ~ books, games, puzzles, snorkeling equipment etc
Q: Whats the coolest nearby activity?
A: For me its all about the snorkeling & gorgeous sandy beaches ~ but the hiking trail upto BOGGY PEAK (Mount Obama) is a great achievement. The trail starts just up the lane next to the CADES BAY PINEAPPLE PLANTATION. It is the highest point of the island in the Sherkelly Mountains approx 1350ft - Magnificent ViewsFor those not so active you can drive up.
Q: Is there anything dangerous that can hurt you?
A: There are no scorpions, snakes, centipedes or spiders anymore the imported MONGOOSE (furry ferret) has pretty much taken care of gobbling up everything so you need not worry. The most dangerous thing to watch is the SUN and too much RUM and not enough water, sun lotion, or shade.
Q: Do you have mosquitos?
A: Yes we have very small mozzies here. All tropical destination have mosquitoes. However as the gardens here are so very lush at our hideaway they provide an eco system to support small tree frogs, lizards, birds, that eat them. We also have small fruit bats in the area that swoop out around dusk and eat 1000 a minute. There is no standing stagnant water as the plants and palms suck it all up, so we do not have a mosquito problem. All the units are screened and supplied with anti repellent products. If you take the necessary precautions of not leaving your doors open at dusk to let them in you should be fine. Avon Skin so Soft is great for those that know they don't want to take any chances on being bitten. It is oil based.
If you know you are prone - pack some anti-histermine.
Q: The weather forecast always mentions clouds/rain?
A: How I love the weather forecasters and websites that overview Antigua.
We are in the tropics so clouds do pass over us and the whole of the Caribbean ~ but they move at quite a speedy pace because we are not a high elevation island. We are known as a dry island which is why our beaches are never impaired by muddy runoff from rivers etc as we do not have any rivers. The weather is pretty gorgeous and the same temperature for the most part all year round. I have lived here 25 years.
