Description of the Sumner vacation cottage rental
The cottage has a large living room with views of lake and woods. An open kitchen dining area faces west. There are two large bedrooms and a roomy bathroom with a tub/shower. The master bedroom has a double bed and woodstove and the second bedroom has two twin beds. A woodstove gives heat on chilly evenings and mornings. The cottage is fully furnished with dishes, cookware, bed linens and towels. The main living area has two attractive leather sofas and comfortable chairs. Off the kitchen a long screened porch allows for pleasant lounging during the glorious sunsets. The kitchen and bath have hot and cold sweet running water pumped from a spring-fed well. A phone is provided for incoming and local calls.

Area Information
The cottage sits on Labrador Pond (a true lake) in the rolling hills of a scenic wooded farm area in Oxford County, Maine. The lake is about 1 mile in size, located 25 miles northwest of Lewiston-Auburn. Oxford County is justifiably renowned for its mineral mines for rockhounds, beautiful colonial houses, churches and historical sites (Abe Lincoln's first vice-president, Hannibal Hamlin, was from nearby Paris Hill, ten miles away.) There is a full schedule of weekly auto races, summer fairs, antique places by the score, summer theater and auctions. This area is definitely an antique collector's dream. Be sure to visit the antique stores in Hallowell if you drive up to the Augusta area for fairs or a trip to the lovely state capital. There is a summer theater en route to Augusta in Monmouth, the Shaker Village. At least seven or eight movie theaters are within a 25 mile drive, as well as a mini-golf course at nearby Bear Pond. Lobsters can be bought in Turner, South Paris or Norway, and the seashore offers a tempting side trip.

Labrador is an unusually pretty lake, spring-fed, clear and mirroring the sky and distant hills. The cottage is built on a rise overlooking the lake with a western view of mountains and sunsets. The western shore of the lake is a wild bird preserve, offering habitation to ducks, Canadian geese, loons, as well as the occasional moose. Canoeing through the reeds here reveals the wildlife, as well as the best fishing spots.

A peaceful and restful vacation

A peaceful and restful vacation

July 19, 2009

The view is absolutely breathtaking from the screened in porch, to the window in the kitchen. The geese marching into the lake with their little ones was amazing. The cottage itself was great. Plenty of room, linens and silverware, dishes, towels, etc. included were great. We barbqued every evening. If you are looking to just kick back and relax, this is the place for you. It is very rural, so no close have to take that drive, which I am sure you will enjoy as well. Being able to take our little dog was great also. She had a blast. Lovely people, great market in town. Bottom line, if you're looking for peace and quiet, you have found your mecca.
