Description of the Swans Island vacation home rental
Make Robin House part of your summer & fall from now on! The private wooded setting right on the shoreline is perfect for watching the tide roll in and out. Enjoy sunrise and sunset by winding through a wooded trail to the BIG rock fondly named Allagash!

4 bedroom, multilevel home includes a master bedroom (queen) & full bath on the first floor, 3 bedrooms (including a 4 bed bunk room!) on the 2nd floor. Guest room 1: Double. Guest room 2: 2 twins, double futon & roll-a-away twin. Guest room 3: 3 single & 1 double in bunk bed format. There is a full bath upstairs too. Fireplace, fully furnished kitchen with microwave and utensils, full washer and dryer, VCR, DVR, DirectTV in den, wireless internet, multilevel decks, gas grill and outdoor seating add to your summer vacation experience.

Enjoy the ever changing sea with 10'+ tides. Swim in the ocean, relax at Fine Sand Beach or swim at the rock quarry - now swimming hole. Buy lobster from the local market or dig clams and mussels! Enjoy the surprises that Swans Island has to offer and be enchanted from the beginning on the Henry Lee Ferry that you take from Bass Harbor to get to Swan's Island! Your kids will beg you to come back each year where you can eat lobster while watching the ebb and flow.

The views from the house and deck make you wake up every morning and think you are in paradise! The low tides are just as pretty as the high tides! Seeing the sea gulls swoop down, pick up a clam or mussel, then fly high over the big boulders that line the shoreline and drop them to crack them open and then eat them is mesmerizing! We like to follow one bird and see where they pick their clam and then guess which boulder they will fly to, drop and eat! We chose this property over others due to the serene location and ocean views.

Make sure you check out Fine Sand Beach, the Quarry swimming hole and TIMS take out - Friday night is pizza night, but order early! Goose Pond is about a mile walk…some may want to crest the ridge behind it for the view of the Atlantic and walk down to the ocean beach.

Make the short drive to Hockamock Head Lighthouse. The views are amazing and you will want to see it at low tide and high tide to experience the crashing waves. There are several trails around the lighthouse that take you to 2 different beaches.
Want to dig clams or muscles? Wait for low tide and look for the small holes in the sand! Grab a shovel and start digging!!

The location of this home with Back Cove on one side and a quiet lagoon on the other side made this the perfect choice for us. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, want to stop, listen and not hear anything, then this is the place for you. Read a book on the deck or borrow one of the books on the book case. Play board games in the evening, hike wooded trails, dig clams, watch the Lobstermen bring in their catch or sleep the day away on the deck...it's all here. Yet, you are a 30 minute ferry ride from Bass Harbor and Mt. Desert Island. It's not home away from home, it's 'relax away from home'!
Area Information
Swan's Island is located 6 miles off the coast of Maine near Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island (home to Acadia National Park). It is an island, with ferry service originating in Bass Harbor. The six mile crossing from Bass Harbor takes about 30 minutes. The ferry, "Captain Henry Lee", holds 17 automobiles as well as walk-on passengers.
The year-round population is about 350 people, with over 1000 people in the summertime.

Swan's Island has some 7,000 acres with a highly irregular shoreline that provides secure and interesting anchorages for visiting boaters. It is hilly, but not particularly high. There is a quarry for swimming as well as places to visit on foot or bicycle. The island has three little villages, Atlantic in Mackerel Cove on the north coast, Swan's Island, on the shores of Burnt Coat Harbor in the south and Minturn.

Lobstering is the main occupation on Swan's Island. The economy of the island is mostly dependent on the income derived from lobstering. Swan's Island has about 40 full-time lobstermen and women, and many part-timers, including school children who fish from small skiffs in the summer.

Worked well for the two of us!
Date of Stay June 22, 2013

Although this house would, I'm sure, work well for a crowd, my husband and I had a fantastic time just using the first floor, with it's convenient layout--bath, bedroom, kitchen/dining room, and living room were so convenient. We also loved that we were able to launch our kayaks from the property--during high tide. Also fun was walking to the "clubhouse" -- about a half-mile walk -- to sit and have coffee in the morning one day and having coffee by Allagash Rock--right on the property, overlooking the bay, but down a wooded path. There are comfortable chairs in both locations--very private and peaceful setting. - Dawn

Beautiful Escape
Date of Stay July 6, 2013

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Robin House. The house itself is spacious with plenty of rooms with a beautiful deck overlooking the cove. We caught mussels and clams right in the backyard. We enjoyed our morning coffee on the deck overlooking the water and ate our lobster on the picnic table on the deck. We went to the lighthouse, quarry and went fishing and met some wonderful local people, who gave us some fishing pointers and even gave us some bait. This is just the type of vacation we were looking for. It was relaxing and comfortable. A perfect vacation for reading a book on the chaise lounge on the deck overlooking the water or exploring the area by kayak. When we go back to Maine, we would definitely stay at the Robin House. It was the perfect house and perfect location. - Christine, NJ

Great relaxing vacation spot
Date of Stay July 13, 2013

Robin House is the perfect spot to spend a week relaxing! We were able to launch our kayaks from the grassy beach behind the house, but also just spent some time on the deck reading books, watching the ocean and enjoying a cool breeze. On our kayak trips we saw bald eagles, seals, and osprey, but we also saw seals come all the way up to the cove behind the house-we could see them from the deck! We slept 7 people in the house comfortably and didn't feel crowded. The house had everything we needed for cooking (a big charcoal grill plus lots of pots and pans, utensils, etc), including a lobster pot for a nice lobster dinner :) This is a great house in a one of a kind spot, and it is highly recommended! - Anonymous, MA

Definitely recommend
Date of Stay August 10, 201

The house was spacious, comfortable and clean. The property and ocean views were spectacular. Kayaking was definitely one of our favorite activities. We had a lot of fun exploring Swan's Island and buying lobsters off the dock at the Fisherman's Co-op. The island residents were friendly and welcoming. My kids begged all week to move to Swan's Island. - Amy

Robin House on Swans Island
Date of StayAugust 17, 2013

Our group of six included two over-65 and two under-10 travelers and we all had a great time. The first reaction everyone had after entering the home was "wow, this is really cool!" The trip across on the ferry was fun, and the property was easy to find after we landed. Everything was clean, and we found the home very well stocked with all the accessories we needed for a great week in Maine (plenty of dishes, cookware, lobster pots, coffee pot, etc). The meat-eaters in the group enjoyed endless lobster purchased at a local market (just a couple minutes drive away) and the fisherman's co-op. We all enjoyed exploring the lighthouse park area, Fine Sandy Beach, and all of the local attractions. Everyone we met on the island was very friendly and helpful. We all enjoyed the kayak, too! The water in the cove is very, very calm and we had no problems at all exploring the shoreline, even as novice kayakers. At low tide the water recedes substantially (so kayaking is to be done at high tide), revealing many clams and muscles (both reportedly quite yummy) . It was a great week with perfect weather. The whole group loved the house and surrounding area. It was quiet and relaxing, just as we had hoped. I would highly recommend Robin House to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway full of lazy days on a charming island. - Milton, MT

The location of this house is absolutely perfect..
Date of Stay: September 14th , 2013

The location of this house is absolutely perfect and the pictures can't do it justice. The views really are as wonderful as they look and the house is as comfortable and spacious. Of course, there were only three of us, so we had tons of room. The wraparound deck is particularly nice. The stairs are a bit steep which could be hard on someone with knee trouble, but there is a bedroom on the main floor. The house has everything you might want and the kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans, plates, cutlery, etc. Good water pressure for the shower. Good directions for what to do on the island. We had good luck with the wireless Internet. We were able to really relax and enjoy the scenery. Took the kayak out a couple times and saw seals swimming not too far from us. Bought fresh lobster right off the boat at $4/lb and had everything we needed at the house to steam or boil them (we steamed) - they were so tender and delicious that we each ate two at a sitting! We did a couple puzzles (there were several puzzles and games at the house as well as tons of books). Folks on the island are friendly - be sure to wave when you're driving around and pass another car. Everyone does. We went to the thrift shop as we needed to find a pair of water shoes. Even that was fun because the people were so nice and the prices were so low. Amazingly, we found just what we needed. We saw deer roaming the island a couple times. Spotted a couple racoons. Discovered what guinea hens look like. We actually never left the island and I'd suggest you plan to spend most, if not all, of your time there as the ferry is a bit expensive and the schedule was limited. All in all, it was a completely relaxing vacation in a beautiful setting (house and island). I think this would be perfect for a family or a group who is looking to spend time together. - Ann, CO

Gorgeous Peaceful Island Retreat
Review Submitted: July 23rd , 2014

Robin House is our favorite vacation spot! We returned this year for our second stay, and it was even better than we remembered. Swans Island is the perfect place to let life slow down a little and breathe in the fresh ocean air. Our favorite attractions included buying lobster right off the boat at the Co-op, visiting the lighthouse (great views from the top!), digging for clams right out back, and using our kayaks to do some exploring. The house itself is perfectly set up to accommodate a group; this year we brought five people and had more than enough room to spare. The living room is a nice spot for playing board games or assembling a puzzle in the evening. The kitchen has everything you might want for cooking (pots, pans, plates, utensils, basic spices, huge lobster pots) and the grill on the deck is great on warm evenings. The house is secluded in gorgeous pine trees (we didn't see or hear any neighbors during our entire stay) but is still only a quick drive away from places like TIMS and the Tea House. We launched our kayaks right out back for a few trips where we saw 15+ seals and at least 5 bald eagles. Downeast Maine kayaking is some of the best of the world, and it's even better when it's only a short walk out your backdoor to get started. We had a few days of cloudy wet weather, but nothing beats watching the fog rolling in and out on the huge wraparound deck with a good book in hand. Robin House is set up to anticipate every vacation need - everything is well labeled, and there is plenty of detailed information provided on local activities, food, and history. It's a great house in an amazing location, and we will definitely be back! - Anonymous, MA

Robin House Swan's Island
Date of Stay: July 26th , 2014

We stayed at Robin house in July of 2014. We had two families, 4 adults and 4 children, with plenty of room. The property feels very private, in a beautiful cove setting, with no other houses in sight. The house is well equipped, with comfortable beds, plenty of towels, internet and cable, although we didn't watch much TV! We really enjoyed Swan's Island - sea kayaking, exploring beaches and the coastline, the Lighthouse, the lobsters, hiking and walking, and a day trip back to Acadia. We had a memorable vacation! - Frank, MA

Family Vacation
Date of Stay: July 1st , 2014

This review is coming in a little late. Our vacation was july 2014 but I really wanted to say something about this wonderful house. My family and my sisters family enjoyed Swans Island and this house. There was so much for us to do and see. I would recommend this house for anyone who is looking for a great house to enjoy with a large family. My husband and I are absolutely going back. - Kelly

Robin House on Swans Island
Date of Stay: June 27th , 2015

We booked this house due to the proximity to Acadia National Park, but found ourselves wanting to stay on Swan's Island most of our trip. The island offers hiking, swimming in the quarry, and a nice beach. The house has everything you need, including a kayak that can be put in at the cove right out the back door. There was plenty of room in the house for our party of nine. The unique location and amazing home made this a memorable vacation for our entire family. - Mike H., IL

Swans Island Robin House
Date of Stay: June 13th , 2015

Our family had a great vacation staying in this island home on Swans Island. The home is a beautiful and secluded retreat that offers a private location on a cove of Swan Island that opens up to the larger ocean area around it. The kids played along the shore line in the pine trees and on large granite boulders that line the area; while we sat on the deck and enjoyed the view. The deck is large with tables for outdoor dining, lounges to sit in the sun, and a grill to cook on. The kayak provided was a great way for us to explore the cove and the surrounding shoreline. The house is very comfortable with beautiful views, plenty of bedrooms, wifi, and all the other amenities you need for a week away. There is access on the island to fresh lobster, lighthouse trails and the island is a short drive (after a ferry ride) to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. I highly recommend this retreat home for any family vacation to Maine. - Ray, IN

Robin House on Island Retreat
Date of Stay: July 25th , 2015

We have been renting a home on Swans Island for 1-2 weeks every year for almost 30 years. Our 7 children are now grown, and with children of their own we have needed more room! We rented Robins House on Island Retreat for the first time this summer - and were delighted with it. This is definitely one of our favorite locations on the island - lots of exploring, perfect for kayaking, and very secluded. The kids loved high tide at Allagash Rock, and swimming in the "lagoon".....it was also a great place for the little ones to safely learn to kayak. We brought our own kayaks, and were so happy to have the additional one at the house - making for some great family adventures. The house was roomy (we had 8 adults & 5 children) - the kids loved the bunk room. The fireplace was great for the one cool night we had, and the outdoor decks were fantastic for outdoor dining. Our only disappointment is that the house is not available for the same weeks next year when the rest of the family will be joining us, and we were hoping for 2 homes on Island Retreat!! We will be back! - Nana Papa S., MA

Island Life
Date of Stay: August 15th , 2015

The Robin House was just the vacation we needed - a quiet, serene beautiful Maine landscape! Our group consisted of 9 adults and 4 kids and although we did need to get creative with bed arrangements at times, we never felt constricted or on top of one another. There was certainly plenty of space for us all. The house is beautifully maintained and sits within its own cove - perfect for star gazing on Allagash Rock and 2 person kayaking (provided by the owners)! The house itself is stocked with essentials, cooking ware, and of course, plenty of board games! We had a wonderful time and hope to visit again in the future. Thanks for a memorable vacation!! - Michelle, NJ

So Peaceful
Date of Stay: August 8th , 2015

We had a wonderful time at Robin House! Traveling with many children, there was plenty of space for everyone. Most importantly, with limited food options on the island, we couldn't have been more grateful for such a well-stocked kitchen, since all meals were prepared in the house. Everything was easy to find and very clean. Thank you!! - Amy, MA

Wow! Wonderful
Date of Stay: September 5th , 2015

My wife, her mother, and I had a great 2 weeks at Robin House. We had 2 full weeks, but we had a constant stream of friends coming and going. We hiked almost everyday -- Blue Rock Trail, Light House, Fine Sand Beach, Smooth Rock Beach (got a little lost on that one). The weather was great -- even the day it rained was a joy (when it rains in Maine, it REALLY rains). Everyone ate their weight in lobsta (we learned that there is no "R" in lobsta) from the COOP (cheap!). Evenings at Martini Point or Calabash Rock were special. TIMS was helpful for shopping - Neal, CO

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the most fun things to do at Robin House?
A: Sit on the deck with a book and watch the tides rise and fall while the sea gulls pick up clams and drop them on the rocks to open and eat the meat. Kids love to play on rocks and walk in the water or go to Fine Sand Beach or the Rock Quarry Pond. If you are looking for restaurants or malls for shopping, this is not the place for you. It's not home away from home, it's 'relax away from home'!
Q: What makes this Maine oceanfront vacation rental special?

We chose this property over others due to the serene location and ocean views.
Q: Why come here and not Acadia?
A: Acadia is just a 30 minute ferry ride away, but once here, most guests find they don't want to leave.
