Description from owner

The Unique Castle in Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera, was formerly the home of Artist Gordon MacMillan-Hughes and was featured in Fodor's Travel guide. Beautifully renovated and modernised in 2012 it still retains the original stained glass windows and decorative doors with a spiral staircase leading up the tower to the artist's favorite room which has natural walls inset with corals and shells. The Castle has 3 bedrooms (but beds for 7), 2 bathrooms, a lounge and large modern kitchen with laundry facilities. Set on a hill, the Castle overlooks the bay front, the settlement of Tarpum Bay and the sea. It is fully air conditioned throughout and has wireless internet and cable TV. There is also a SUV available for your stay at an excellent rate.

Tarpum Bay is a one of the last fishing villages and has a warm and friendly community. 3 miles of beautiful beachfront span the homely village. The open bay front features a reef with superb snorkeling and fishing opportunities, not only this but a number of underwater features such as a blue hole and hydro-vents make this an exciting dive opportunity for anyone. “Wonderful stay in Eleuthera's fantastic Castle”

Reviewed 26 Mar 2015

The island of Eleuthera is very beautiful and there are so many beaches to explore. It is a natural beauty and is not overrun by tourists. If you are looking for peace, quiet, serenity and to be the only person on a beach, Eleuthera is for you. There are no malls, grocery stores are not like American/Canadian stores and prices are higher. Availability to fresh fruit, vegetables and bread is limited, so stocking up (Tuesdays) is recommended. The island residents are so friendly and helpful. Eleuthera runs on island time, so don't be in a rush, just relax and enjoy the experience. Driving is on the left and roads are in rough shape, but there are many access points to beautiful beaches, so keep your eyes peeled! We loved Alabaster Beach (Caribbean side just south of Governor's Harbour Airport) and Tippy's pink sand beach (Atlantic side). We were so very happy with our stay at the Castle. The Castle is in Tarpum Bay which is the fishing village on the Island. You can walk to Tarpum Beach in five minutes. We felt very safe at the Castle and in Tarpum. In fact we felt safe everywhere we went, and we went everywhere. The Castle was spacious, the kitchen was well equipped (pots, pans, cutlery, dishes) and there is so much space. The living room was comfy and the bedrooms were great. My favourite thing was the roof top deck. It was a great place to drink a coffee and just take in the beautiful turquoise water. Joe was great and very accommodating. Our flights were delayed (stay away from Silver Airways) and he came and found us (we got a little turned around in Tarpum at night). He made sure we got set up and even placed a takeaway order for us. The Castle was clean and a great place to spend our vacation. The experience was different from staying at a resort, which was exactly what I was looking for. We had our own space and weren't tripping over tourists. Would I return to Eleuthera? ABSOLUTELY, and yest I would stay at the Castle again. If you are looking for serenity and calm, you will not be disappointed in your visit to Eleuthera.

“romantic and modern”

Reviewed 17 Feb 2014

I have stayed at the castle twice and both times loved the experience. I have been coming to Eleuthera for many years and enjoyed living in town for a change, being able to walk everywhere and experiencing the local community. The people are friendly and welcoming and I felt very much at home. The castle itself is a romantic place to stay. It is steeped in local history and heritage, and although it looks eccentric on the outside, the inside has been modernized and is very comfortable to live in. The kitchen is large, the bathrooms clean and the bedrooms comfortable. The "garrett" room is a a once in a lifetime experience with views over the Caribbean Sea and the village. I am planning to stay there again this year.
