About the area

The house is located at a sea point called Xtampú which is an ancient salt commerce port of the mayans. Only two miles south of this point you can find the archeological site of Xcambó. This is a new and magnificent touristic site now included in the cruise liners passengers' tour that arrive to Progreso. Also less than a mile south from the house you can watch flamingos living in their natural habitat. You can also watch them from the corridor of the house flying back and forth from their sunrise and sunset sites. The beaches of this of this area are continuously watched by ecology authorities since turtles often come to seashore to lay eggs. If you found any turtles or turtle eggs don't disturb them, instead you could inform authorities in Telchac and be part of this crusade in favor of our turtles. A few meters away from seashore, in front of the house, (swimming distance) there is a small reef where you can snorkle. There are also "Mangrove Trips" in Telchac. A local group of fishermen in Telchac have carved miles of trails through the mangrove forests. They call this place "Aves y Cenotes de Telchac". The fisherman poles a little boat through the water canals and you get to see beautiful birds in their natural habitat. A beautiful ride! Chichen Itza and Uxmal are two hours away by land and the colonial city of Mérida is 50 minutes away. Mérida is a metropolitan city where you can find any service you need: Car rentals , international airpot, five star hotels, banks (international banks), first class hospitals, big shopping centers, everything you expect from a big city. Chichen Itza and Uxmal are the two most important arquelogical sites of the peninsula. They also count with first class touristic services.

“Christmas at Cantamar”

Reviewed 9 Jan 2016

We had a great time staying at Cantamar! Maricarmen is warm and inviting and went out of her way to ensure we enjoyed our stay and had everything we could need. Maricarmen showed us everything about the house, the internet, and a good recommendation for a local restaurant. The house was clean and spacious. The kitchen had everything we needed including two big bottles of water. Maricarmen left a few things for us to use including coffee. The beds were made up with fresh sheets, and there were ceiling fans. Air-conditioning was not needed as there was a nice breeze through the house almost all the time. The house is decorated in an Oceanside theme, and sparsly furnished as shown in the photos. The dining area is nice for four, and the living room area is comfortable for a few more at a time. Jorge?s wife Heny cleaned the house thoroughly twice during our stay and Jorge came by several times to check on us and clean the pool. Maricarmen was always available by a local cell phone she provided for us during our stay. The pool was very refreshing. Over the Christmas I was surprised at how empty the beach was. The most at one time was 14; we had it to ourselves. We swam in the ocean multiple times a day. It was relatively warm (for us Canadians), but not like bathwater ? which suited us fine. The waves were gentle, you could go out about 100m, to a sand bar, without it getting more then 6 feet deep. It was safe for swimming for my young son, with no undertow, and a sand bottom. Not good for snorkeling though, as the water is sandy rather then clear, near the shore. Lots of shells on the beach to comb through. The beach was mostly clean, with a few minutes of clean up in front of the house very little else washed up over 10 days. We appreciated the satellite TV, to keep up with football, and we could the language. The internet was not completely reliable, but this was an issue with the provider, not the house or Maricarmen. She went out of her way to get a repair crew out to the house, and make sure we had an alternate method of getting access via cellular. Overall we enjoyed our time in the Yucatan very much. We mostly stayed at the house and enjoyed the beach and lounging on the porch in the hammocks. And there is no shortage of things to do and places to explore in the area. Highly recommend that you have a car. If you are looking for an inviting and comfortable place to stay, Cantamar is an excellent choice.

Owner's reply: Hello Kelli...I really appreciate your kind words. It was a great pleasure having you as guests in our home...You have a wonderful family !! Thank you for letting me see all your pictures during your stay! We really enjoyed knowing you were having fun at Cantamar during your stay. We really hope to have you visit again in the future.

“If you want the beach to yourself!”

Reviewed 18 Feb 2015

This place was amazing. A huge 3 bedroom beach house with an old timey feeling decor. We had 5 of us on this trip and it was plenty of room. We liked how the upstairs two bedrooms had a separate entrance from the main floor (with it's own balcony). The hammocks on the beach porch were super relaxing. Jorge (the house keeper) was nice as can be and Maricarmen had plenty of info for us and told us to never hesitate to give her a call (cell phone provided) if we had any questions no matter how big or small. Definitely recommend this place if your looking to be away from the tourist crowds on this authentic Mexico beach experience...... not to mention having such a wonderful host.

Owner's reply: Thank you Bradley for your kind review! I'm very happy you all had a great time! Please say hello to your friends for me, I'll also let Jorge know about your kind words. Hopefully we will have you visit Cantamar again in the future:) Best regards , Maricarmen

All what you need, quiet and nature. A long wild beach, not to much building.Great for us! The sea on one side, the swimming pool on the other, perfect when windy. Keep the secret if you hope to have the chance to rent it again!

Owner's reply: You are always welcome, we are very happy that you liked our home. Hope to see you again!

“Beautiful Beach Home”

Reviewed 9 Mar 2013

Our family of 5 enjoyed your beautiful beach home this winter. The home was very clean when we arrived and the pictures on VHR do not do it justice. The house was very well stocked with towels, linen, cooking utensils, etc. We loved the coverred veranda with the hammocks, overlooking the beach and ocean. Every bedroom had a ensuite. The kids enjoyed the pool daily. The area was very quiet and safe. We had a rental car which would be a necessity if staying here. My husband found driving here to be very easy and we drove into all the nearby towns (Progreso, Telchac, Merida) for shopping, dining, etc. The Xcambo Mayan Ruins are litereally 5 minutes away and when we went we had the entire place to ourselves. The kids could run, explore and climb on everything. We loved this home and we had a very relaxing time here. I would recommend this home to families wanting another option to the "all-inclusive" travel.

Owner's reply: We are so pleased to read your review...and very happy you had a nice stay....Thank you very much and we really hope to have you as our guests again soon!! :) Joaquin and Maricarmen.

“A week at Cantamar”

Thanks for a nice vacation- the house is much nicer than the pictures make it look. Air conditioning is really not needed because the house is so well ventilated. Much thanks to Jorge for finding my sandals!

We had a very good time in your house in Telchac, it was really
what I expected but even better because with photos you can never get
the real feeling.
We were really surprised to see the infinite beach!
I will recommend your house if
