About Texas Hill Country

Visiting Texas Hill Country

One of North America's top-rated inland family vacation spots covers 25 counties of America's second largest state. Spread over the central and southern half of TX, Hill Country vacation rentals are available in a variety of settings. Pick from popular San Antonio and Austin metropolitan areas or slowdown with the scenic southwestern region outside the city limits. Texas Hill Country rentals are available year-round for families and visitors to enjoy the Lone Star State's natural beauty and fun, family activities. Hill Country, Texas serves up quintessential images of Texas with rocky outcroppings, views that seem endless in every direction, and a carpet of wild flowers. This area located between Austin and San Antonio includes the music towns of Luckenbach and Gruene, as well as Fredericksburg, Marble Falls, and Boerne. If you picture the landscape of the old west, Hill Country is what you’d see. Texas Hill Country cabins provide a base of operations for your Texas vacation.

Visiting Texas Hill Country

All types of homes to rent by owner are scattered throughout the region, allowing families to explore Texas Hill Country vacation rentals near the activities and events scheduled during their Texas trip. Peak rental dates go fast; vacationers can save time and frustration by checking as early as possible for openings during the times they hope to visit.

The Texas Hill Country Region

The Edwards Plateau covers the eastern half of the Texas savanna. Thin layers of trees cover the area bordered by the Balcones Fault and Llano Uplift. The Balcones Fault is an active fault area that is the Eastern border of Texas Hill Country. Here visitors will find a variety of beautiful cliffs with dozens of limestone caves hiding just below the surface. The Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge is near the fault, located in a large canyon on Edwards Plateau facing Austin, TX The area is popular for birdwatchers and enthusiasts with 245 species of birds that nest in the remote location part of or all year.
The Enchanted Rock is one the major rock formations on the Llano Uplift. The rock, a pretty, pale pink, is a massive granite mound. The Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is open to visitors for hiking, rock climbing, watching, and enjoying nature.
Visitors can rent Texas Hill Country cabins on the plateau or near one of the winding rivers or cool, beautiful lakes in the 25-county region. The Pedernales River is one of two major tributaries of the Colorado River. The river drains into Lake Travis, where it then merges with the Colorado River 10-miles west of Austin. Lake Lyndon B. Johnson is a Colorado River Reservoir where the Llano and Colorado connect. Several other rivers begin in the area.

Sightseeing & Things to Do in Texas Hill Country

Indoor, outdoor, historical, cultural, amusement sites and activities are abundant in Hill Country. Fishing charters, river cruises, and guided kayaking tours are just the beginning of the water fun for families. There is spur plunking, cave exploring, nature walks, museums, and old steam engine rides too. Hill Country offers some beautiful and easy driving. While you’re exploring the back roads, check out Cascade Caverns in Boerne, the Cibolo Nature Center, and the Guadalupe River State Park in Spring Branch. The park gives some of the best public access to the cypress-lined river, an ideal spot for kayakers and fishermen. The Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch in New Braunfels is home to white rhinos, antelopes, and other exotic animals. Next to the ranch you’ll find Texas’ largest known caverns where you can check out amazing rock formations constantly altered by flowing water.

Regional Foods & Dining in Texas Hill Country

Everything is bigger in Texas, including servings and great eating opportunities. Bring your big appetite and chow down on some of the areas specialties including world-renown barbecue and Tex-Mex flavors. The area also has a strong German influence, which is seen and tasted in the many delicious types of sausage available. While there are some upscale dining options in Fredericksburg, most places in Hill Country are casual and stop serving between 9 and 10 p.m.

Throughout Texas, hot and spicy is king- and Hill Country is no different. In Texas, BBQ is extremely popular. Texas BBQ sauces in the more traditional restaurants are seasoned heavily with multiple types of peppers, cumin, chili or ancho powder, onions, and have very little tomato and sugar. The also often have a smoky flavor thanks to the meats that are dipped into them. Bottled barbeque sauces are not the same as those used in restaurants as the bottled variety doesn't usually include meat drippings.

Texas Hill Country Weather & Climate

Weather in the 25-county region can vary depending on location. Texas Hill Country cabins located in the higher terrains, can give visitors cooler temperatures in the winter months, as well as a slight break from the hot, dry summers in the evenings. Families with Hill Country rentals scheduled for the winter months will need warm clothes to stay comfortable. Temperatures often dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit from November until the end of January. May is the rainiest month for the Texas region.

Events

When the Texas heat breaks, the festival season begins. Fredericksburg hosts an annual Oktoberfest and New Braunfels puts on Wurstfest, both with plenty of beer, German sausage, and music. If you’re visiting in October, don’t miss Texas Wine Month at the Hill Country wineries. Many of them offer tastings and special events during this time. The holiday season is also a time of celebration in many of the towns in the Hill Country.
While not an official event, the fields of wildflowers in spring are a must see. The amazing color and endless fields are visible from the roads, and resemble something out of a French impressionist painting.

Shopping

Hill Country offers an eclectic mix of shopping options with everything from upscale boutiques to rustic flea market stores, and from studios featuring the work of local craftsmen to true Texas souvenirs, you’ll find a number of unique stops along your trip. The names of the stores are almost as delightful as their contents. Renting a Texas Hill Country Cabin means you can enjoy the culture and quaint shops the way the locals do.
