1About Canyon Lake
Nestled away in Hill Country, Canyon Lake is the ideal Central Texas getaway. With everything from boating to parasailing to shopping to keep you busy here, you’ll want to to book a Canyon Lake vacation rental and stay awhile.
Climate
Thanks to its location in Texas Hill Country, Canyon Lake stays relatively warm year-round. With its lakefront setting, it’s easy to catch some breeze in just about any kind of weather. Summer temperatures typically top out around 95 degrees, while winter highs are usually in the 60s. June is generally the rainiest month each year, so if you would rather leave your umbrella at home, plan your visit in January or February.
Transit
Canyon Lake is located in Central Texas and is an easy drive from San Antonio or Austin. If you’re traveling from across the country, fly into Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, about 70 miles northeast of the lake, or San Antonio International Airport, about 35 miles southwest of Canyon Lake. For quick access to your choice of Canyon Lake vacation rentals and all of the attractions in Hill Country, be sure to rent a car to get around.
Things to Do
The biggest attraction in the Canyon Lake area is the lake itself, which offers numerous watersports, along with swimming and fishing. Explore the lake by kayak or boat, or go diving for a unique underwater perspective. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even go parasailing hundreds of feet above the lake or explore the Canyon Lake Gorge for a guided walking tour that’s both educational and beautiful. You’ll find numerous outlets for renting small and large boats along the lake, as well as gear for all kinds of water-based activities.
For a relaxing day with friends or family skip the lake and head to the river instead. Grab some inner tubes and float down the Guadalupe River under the warm Texas sun. This river helped Canyon Lake earn its nickname as the “Water Recreational Capital of Texas.”
The Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill Country is another location that kids and adults will find interesting. The museum features outdoor exhibits, dinosaur tracks, and Native American artifacts.
Food & Dining
Wake up to one of Canyon Lake’s favorite breakfast joints, Granny D’s Homecooking. Portions are Texas-sized, and the menu’s highlights include inventive pancake flavors, chicken fried steak, and breakfast tacos. Be sure to arrive early to beat the lines. For dinner try local hotspot Gennaro’s Trattoria, which specializes in Italian dishes like Neapolitan pizza, lasagna, and chicken parmigiana. The trattoria’s terrace also offers a relaxing spot to unwind with a glass of wine.
Events
Canyon Lake attracts visitors and locals alike with a number of festivals each year. In April, don’t miss the Canyon Lake Annual BBQ Cookoff, a top event in BBQ-loving Hill Country. In October, celebrate the bounty of the season with Harvestfest, typically held at the Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill Country. Later in October, Shrimpfest applauds the bountiful shrimp harvests from nearby Gulf of Mexico, and the Canyon Lake Boat Parade delights visitors in December.
No matter what time of year you plan your visit, there’s always plenty of fun happening in Canyon Lake. To get your top choice, be sure to book your Canyon Lake vacation rentals early, especially if you plan to visit Texas Hill Country during the busy summer months.
