NIce home to live the Japanese experience

August 18, 2014

Nice house Japanese style where we could experience living like a normal Japanese family, the are is quite nice and well located for Ueno park, everything one needs is one or two blocks away. The house needs few appliances such as coffee maker, more china and cuttlery. We really enjoyed this house that we used as a base to travel to other areas in Japan. We will definetely rent it again.

Owner's reply:

Thank you for your kind review of our Tokhouse Tokyo Vacation House. We are glad you enjoyed the house and the convenience of our location to see the sights of Tokyo and get to other parts of Japan.
We keep the house stocked with enough dinnerware for 8 guests so thanks for letting us know if there was a shortage as some must of vanished somehow:)
Kind regards,
Richard Ashley

Nice place to stay for Tokyo Visit

January 16, 2011

We found Richard's place on the internet. Convenient - just a few minutes from Nishi-Nippori train station (Yamanote Line) Atmosphere - stay around Japanese residence. Interesting - Yanaka Ginza shopping street nearby. Excellent. We would certainly stay here again for our next visit to Tokyo.

Not just a house

January 16, 2011

Richard didn't just rent us a fully equipped, newly-furnished, cozy apartment in a SUPERB location, but he also made sure that we'd have everything we need to enjoy our stay. On top of that he enriched our visit to Tokyo in many ways, like providing a tour around the neighborhood to point out the shops and places with best prices and helping with arrangements of a wonderful dinner in our kitchen with home-made Japanese food by very sympathetic cooks :^) I would definitely recommend Tokhouse to anyone visiting Tokyo!

Just Amazing

January 16, 2011

I rented the Tokhouse for my family who were coming to Tokyo so they can see their new grandson. I was totally amazed when I saw the property and the location. I have lived in Japan for about 5 years and never came across something so spectacular. The host Richard was wonderful. He treated my family like royalty. And the newly remodeled home was perfectly fit to suit their needs. The location was great too. I will definatly recommend the tokyo vacation house to my friends and family who plan to visit Tokyo

Comfortable, Convenient and Affordable

January 16, 2011

I was the first person to stay at Tokhouse after Richard opened and it was a godsend. I've been going to Tokyo off and on for more than three years and finding a place to stay is always a daunting task there. Generally you either pay an extremely high price for what you are getting or end up in a place that is very old. Tokhouse is neither. Tokhouse is newly renovated and the price is more than fair. As a bonus it is tucked away in a quite Japanese neighborhood and really gives you the experience of what it would be like if you were Japanese and lived there. With its mixture of a quite setting and proximity to the Yamanote train station (only about 5 min walk) which is one of the most popular lines in Tokyo getting you to any of the major areas within 20min you really can't beat it. I stayed there for three months and really got to know Richard and he was invaluable in showing me around and even took me on one of the best bike rides I've ever been on all throughout Eastern Tokyo showing me a view of the city I would never have experienced on my own. If you are thinking to go to Tokyo, check out Tokhouse and I guarantee Richard will take care of you.

"Hidden gem in quiet neighborhood in Tokyo." The Tokhouse was fantastic. We were a family with small children and had a friend join us too. So pleased we stayed here. Very convenient for exploring Tokyo. The house is traditional yet had all the gadgets and gizmos of the 21st century. We loved putting our futons each night and setting the screens to separate the room for privacy. The house was very clean and well equipped. There is a supermarket ls around the corner across the road and it is very close to the station. There are great restaurants in the area too. Would stay again!

"The most convenient place to many things you could need on vacation."The owner of the Tok House, Richard is very accommodating and will recommend whatever you wish. He is very professional and met us (in the middle of the night!) at the house to assist with all its intricacies and offered suggestions for many things to do around the neighborhood and beyond. The best thing about the house is you feel like you are getting a cultural experience you would not be able to get from a hotel. The location of the Tok House is in the middle of a commercial like neighborhood, but is situated in an alley that is typically one that is imagined in Japan. Would stay again! Thank you, Richard!

I can attest that all the descriptions in the houses are as promised and more. Our vacation was hassle free and we did not need to worry about anything because Richard had already put out all the stops to make sure we had everything we needed for our trip (towels and toiletries, all kitchen utensils we can use and then bring out, umbrellas when it rains, etc) and were always ready to accommodate us shall we need anything else (like extra towels and toiletries for example). Before being in Tokyo and while there, Richard was always there to guide us and make our stay enjoyable, helping us with our itinerary and other concerns.

The location was very central and allowed easy access to all our destinations. The neighborhood is quiet and pleasant but had everything we need, from nice places to eat at and cheap places to get groceries. The neighbors were also very kind and when we left, even gave the children some souvenir.

"SIMPLY PERFECT". All was perfect. We were 6 people from France and we will go back in this house for sure. It was not very expensive. The house is near the Yamanote's line and near Yanaka too. Thank you soo much and see you soon .

Rhex and Paul from the Philippines
Thanks for the awesome 5 days we stayed here !Love it! Thankful for Richard's hospitality, amazing and charming house. He also gave us maps and how to do a walking tour from the house. We definitely will be back in Tokyo and stay at tokhouse again. Thank you Richard!

Perfect introduction to an Tokyo urban adventure" The house is located in a quaint and atmospheric area. A mixture of old and new residences in narrow streets and lane-ways and just a short stroll to the local restaurants/bars. Too many positives to list, Richard was invaluable as a source of local knowledge. His recommendations were worthwhile and contributed to our 'Tokhouse' experience. He is definitely on to something here.. it was ...FUN!

"I felt very at home."My group of three rented out Tokhouse 102 and 201 for two weeks and we were very satisfied. We could have easily had three more people staying with us in the same rooms with little inconvenience. The apartments had all the comforts and conveniences of home; we really liked the free high speed WiFi in particular. The station was a very short walk away (~8 minutes) if we wanted to explore the city, and there were a variety of restaurants and stores near the apartment if we needed something quickly. I recommend TokHouse to anyone who wants to explore Tokyo at their leisure.

Christine and friends from Germany
Having lived in Tokyo before, staying at Tokhouse was like coming home. Its a real Japanese home, but remodeled for taller people ;) Everything you need is there, with lots of space and practically installed. We received a very good introduction to everything and some very useful maps from our host! Close to the Yamanote you are everywhere in no time and there are lots of good shops and restaurants around. If I can, I will definitely come back to stay there again!

Paul and friends from Australia
Staying at Tokhouse 101 was a highlight of our trip to Tokyo and Richard was an excellent host. After many hours of searching, the usual lists of hotel accommodation just didn't seem to be making an impression on my planned adventure to Japan. That was until I serendipitously came across Tokhouse 101. I read the details provided and also the reviews from those who had stayed there. I was sold on the idea of a vacation house.

The Tokhouse was very clean, spacious and well appointed. It was a perfect base for all we wanted to do. It was close to the train station and the JR Yamanote line which gave us easy access to all the major areas of Tokyo - Tokyo Station 13 minutes - Shinjuku Station 20 minutes. The neighborhood surrounding the Tokhouse was very pleasant and we found some excellent places to eat and shop.

Lucien and friend Lin from Taiwan
Thank you so much for renting the Tokyo Vacation House 102 to us. And I must say, all the wonderful information about where to go and where to eat you kindly provided is very practical and helpful, thank you very much for that too. I have been in Tokyo for 3 times till now, and this time with Tokyo Vacation House is definitely the best one I ever experienced.

Shazwani and friend from Singapore
The apartment was very well maintained and decorated, well-stocked (with a microwave, toaster, hangers if you wish to do laundry). Richard was very helpful - he pointed out the areas of interest and recommended food places within walking distance of the apartment. Overall, we had a very good experience and would definitely come back to Tokhouse when we are in Tokyo.

Naomi and family from Paris, France
A nice and convenient house / a renter of great help. Not much to add to the previous reviews. What stands out for me are the location (great neighborhood), the smooth running of the house (everything works well) and the great assistance of Mr. Ashley : he explains, he can be reached easily and he answers to your questions and provides help if necessary.

Kat and friends from Manila, Philippines
We reserved the house at around July of 2013 for 8 days in April 2014, and good thing, because the house was immediately fully booked for the entire month just a few days later. The house itself was quite cozy, just enough to fit 6 adults, with 4 people sleeping on the second floor and 2 in the loft. The amenities provided were very useful, and the kitchen was compact but efficient. We saved a bit of money by cooking in the house instead of eating out every night. The fact that the shower and toilet were separate was also very helpful, as we didn't have to crowd each other and wait in line for them all the time. The house is also just a few blocks away from a wholesale supermarket and is surrounded by quite a few convenience stores and take out places, so finding something to eat was never a problem. It's a few blocks away from the train station, which included the Yamanote and the Nippori-Toneri Liner. The Yamanote is very helpful for going around the main areas of Tokyo. Mr Ashley met us in the station when we arrived from Nagoya and led us to the house, and when we arrived explained all the nearby places we could go to by walking. He was a very gracious host to us and tried to clarify any of the questions we had. All in all we had a very pleasant stay in Tokhouse 101. (*Nishi-Nippori station includes the JR Yamanote, the JR Keihin-Tohoku, the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda line and the Nippori-Toneri Line)

Perfect! Great base for first time Tokyo visit - Richard is a mine of local knowledge & maps and the space is super clean, easy to use, convenient and with character.

Good decision. The family loved the place, and the kids especially loved the attic. The house is very close to the rail line (JR line) and is in a very good area. Lots of things to do and see close to the area. Richard was very helpful in getting us around Tokyo. Have already recommended to relatives and friends, and would recommend to anyone else, especially a family.

Second stay in 15 months and couldn't be more pleased again! This was our second stay at Tokhouse in the past 15 months (last time was in Dec 2012). My fiancée and I stayed in the 201 unit both times, and we had additional family members stay in the 102 unit this time. Just like our first stay, we could not have had a better experience. The owner Richard is extremely helpful and organized and makes everything so easy. He provides standard maps and suggestions for things to do in the immediate area and Tokyo in general, and he also asked us ahead of time if there were any specific maps or information we wanted, and he had it waiting for us upon arrival. Check in and check out is a breeze. We love the location as it's in a quieter part of the city and inhabited entirely by locals - and yet you're still only a 5 minute walk to one of the stations on the main JR Yamanote line. Between that train line and the subway you can get to anywhere you need to in the city, and still return home at night to a peaceful, good-sized apartment away from the hustle and bustle of some of the more touristy areas in the city. We've stayed in hotels in Tokyo before, but after staying in an apartment with a washer and full kitchen, there is no going back to hotel living. When you factor in the cost (less than $100 a night for both of us combined!) as compared to a decent hotel which will be significantly more expensive and smaller, I feel like there isn't a better deal in town. And while I haven't stayed in any of the other apartments advertised on this site, just from comparing the prices and pictures it seems like Tokhouse is the best deal. For me personally, after 2 incredible visits I don't see the need to try out another place. My fiancée and I plan to travel to Tokyo often in the future as her brother and sister-in-law live there (she is born and raised in Tokyo and thinks we found a real gem in Tokhouse), and we've already decided that Tokhouse will be our choice of lodging every time! Mahalo, Richard!

Nice place in Tokyo. Spent two great weeks in Tokyo with our two children. Richard was very helpful and his suggestions about places to visit and to eat helped us many times. We loved the neighborhood and the apartment was just what we wanted. Great communication before and afterwards, and altogether a nice experience.

Kim and family from America
Perfect for a family of 4 with school age children. It is well equipped and clean. It is located in a safe and quiet residential neighborhood. The market, bakery, restaurant and train station are a short easy walk. Richard is a great resource for information around Tokyo and beyond.

Tim and family from Australia
"Top location, tidy, tight" Property owner met us at the train station late on a cold, wet night - much appreciated. The property is well located in relation to public transport, food, restaurants and tourist attractions. Facilities and fit-out (includes WI-fi) were all good. Our residence (Tokhouse #2) was a little tight for a family of four at night but still a top introduction to Tokyo.

Canadian family from Vancouver, BC
Great location for sightseeing! Better than a hotel for a family. Located in a quiet urban area, this townhouse is an easy walk to the Nishi-Nippori station; from there you can take the JR Yamanote line to most of the sights you want to see, or transfer easily to another line. In the neighbourhood are convenient shops for groceries etc., and good restaurants. The townhouse itself is clean and comfortable. Keep in mind it is a traditional Japanese home and this you will be sleeping on the floor on a futon, and the stairs are steep which may be an issue for those with limited mobility. Mr. Ashley will meet you at the station, and give you lots of great information.

Abdulaziz and family from Saudi Arabia
Awesome...I stayed at Tokhouse Tokyo vacation house for 6 nights with my wife, niece, and three kids. The location is great and close to the station which you can go anywhere from there. Everything was provided and the house is equipped with heaters even the floors is equipped with heaters so you can walk in the house without slippers. The owner is such a nice person and luckily he was working in my country when he was young so we have chatted about his experience and it was really interesting. He provided us with all the maps of the places that we want to visit and showed us all the convenient places around the house. If I have the chance to visit Tokyo again I would stay at the same house. Therefore, I highly recommend the house... Thank you so much Richard...

John and friends from Melbourne
Comfortable , convenient and helpful. Richard the owner of Tokhouse was exceptionally helpful. He went to great lengths to provide useful advice for our onward travels. He was able to provide a westerners perspective for us.

Amazing way of being in Tokyo. The house was nice and in a quiet place, near the subway and JR Yamanote line, at Nishi Nippori station. The owner received us at the station and indicated us how works everything in the house, because some instructions were in Japanese!!! He give us a lot of recommendations about places to visit and kindly replay all our questions. If we should come again we will come back to Tokio TokHouse.

Emmi and friend from Helsinki, Finland
This was our second time in Tokhouse. We chose the place because it's like home - but in Tokyo. The house is close to Yamanote line which is handy when you wanna see different things around the city. Also the neighborhood is cozy and there are several delicious but cheap eating options nearby. In the mornings you can buy fresh onigiris on your way to station. Richard is great host. You will get tips and maps for things to do and his apartment has everything you need for your stay - in Japanese compact size.

Home away from Home!! Our family loved staying at Tokhouse Tokyo Vacation House..From being personally greeted at the railway station to the spacious (rarity in Tokyo) well equipped house.. we could not fault our experience. Some of the great sights of Tokyo and the Metro/JR lines all within easy walking distance and the best bit is that you experience Tokyo like a local..If you are traveling with a family or just want some room to move this is your place. Thanks Richard for your hospitality and such a great stay!!

I can not say anything bad about this place even if I try. The house is great place to stay if you are new or have already stayed in Japan as it is clean, well organized, has everything and the location is awesome, you will love the local neighborhood. The host (Richard) had a personal guide book ready with instructions on how to operate every device in the home and all the local hot spots.
Definitely staying here next year.

Stay Here! This is a perfect option for both short- and long-term stays in Tokyo. You're given a full apartment for a price that competes with and often beats hotel prices, even for a single traveler like myself. There are a lot of things to see in the local neighborhood (within walking distance to Ueno). And the house is conveniently located near the Nishi-Nippori station, with access to both metro and JR lines, meaning you can get anywhere in the city very quickly. The owner (Richard) is very nice and eager to help you get the most out of your visit to Tokyo. I give Tokhouse my highest recommendation. Next time you visit Tokyo, stay at Tokhouse!

Dora and family from Sabah, Malaysia
Great location! Great house! Great Host! We, a family of five stay at house 101 for five days in Feb 2014 and the house is lovely, clean and all appliances work well with no complaint from us. The location is great with convenience store, supermarket, drug store, restaurant within 30 seconds of walk. Yanaka Ginza is just a mere 3-5 minutes walk depends on your pace of walking. The house is located within the city loop line(Yamanote line) thus making our access to all the attraction places easy and convenient without changing lines all the times. Richard our host is helpful and provide us with lots of useful information regarding the area and also places to visit during our stay there. I actually recommend my friend to stay over at Richard's place for this March trip but unfortunately Richard's calender is already taken for the dates that they went. Will definitely stay at his place when we come back and we are already planning to come back next march for sakura:)

Great place to stay for 5 people. Our family of 5 stayed at Tokhouse in January for 6 nights and found it to be a great location for exploring Tokyo. Richard met us at the train station and on arrival he explained how everything worked - he has a very detailed manual with all the instructions. Tokhouse is a large residence by Japanese standards so we were pleased to have the space for 5 of us - one large room with futons plus the loft, was ample space for sleeping. It is exactly like the photos on the and is very clean and tidy. The house has heat pumps and instant hot water so was really warm. We especially appreciated having the use of a washing machine to do our washing. Located down a side street it is very quiet and you don't even feel like you are in a large city. From Tokhouse it is a short walk to Nishi-Nippori station and from there you can catch either the JR train or Metro - it is really easy to get to lots of places in Tokyo via train. Walking around the local area is also very interesting. Richard has lots of excellent resources so if you want to know anything just ask. He provided us with lots of maps and advice on areas to visit. The security deposit via Paypal all worked well, but we did lose quite a lot in the currency conversion, but there is really no other way to pay this deposit. We would definitely stay here again.

I stayed at Tokhouse vacation house for three nights as part of a broader trip across Japan. I found it from the recommended accommodation listings in Lonely Planet guidebook, which has a more or less accurate description. For me, a big plus point was communication with Richard, the landlord, prior to arriving in Tokyo. He was very helpful with recommendations for Tokyo sightseeing and travel tips for Japan in general. The accommodation itself is comfortable and probably is larger than you'd get for your money at business hotels and hostels in other parts of Tokyo. Although Nishi-Nippori (nearest train) area is quite quiet, Yanaka and Ueno areas are easily walkable and you can even stretch your legs as far as Akihabara if you're feeling up to it. Nishi-Nippori is on the Yamanote train line which forms a ring around central Tokyo and can take you to all the best sightseeing spots. This is particularly useful for those who are using JR train passes as the Yamanote line is owned by JR and therefore included in your pass.

Great Location. We stayed at Tokhouse for the last 3 days of our stay in Tokyo. The location was fantastic and the owner was more than helpful. He recommended sightseeing, restaurants and helped us navigate our way around the area. The apartments is well equipped and has all the facilities you need to be comfortable.

Top location, tidy, tight. Property owner met us at the train station late on a cold, wet night - much appreciated. Affordable, comfortable, great location. A decently sized house (for Tokyo!), that was ideal for my family of five, with adequate facilities and room to sleep. The location was great, Nishi-Nippori is a great station and on the Yamanote line so if you familiarize yourself with the subway and JR train network of Tokyo it's really easy to get to any major attraction. Richard was a great host with interesting stories and advice. Would definitely stay again one day!

We stayed for a week but wish we could have stayed longer. Great location, very helpful owner, clean, great value...what more can you say. Highly recommended for families with kids. The location is particularly convenient for those with JR passes. Will hope to stay there again when we return to Tokyo.

Richard, our host, was extremely helpful and provided us with plenty of very useful maps and information on Tokyo. He also gave us a very efficient orientation on the house and how everything worked as well as the run down on the local area, shops, restaurants etc.. We stayed in the house for eight nights with our four children and found it to be an ideal base from which to explore Tokyo. The house was very warm with excellent heating and hot water (we loved the Japanese bath!) and although we didn't really cook there, the kitchen is very well supplied with all amenities for cooking. In short, this was such a great option for us as a family and so much easier than staying in a hotel.

Louise and Erik and family from Denmark
We really appreciated our stay in the house. It was spacious (We were two adults and two kids (5 and 7 yrs), clean and cosy. It was very conveniently located close to a station on the Yamanote-line. The neighborhood was quiet and nice with supermarkets/convenience stores near by. Compared to other parts of Tokyo it was fairly cheap to eat out and there were many small restaurants in the neighborhood. Richard was very helpful and flexible and contributed to making our stay a very pleasant experience. We would definitely recommend this house to everybody that needs a place to stay in Tokyo.

We rented the smaller unit 102 for 9 days of our honeymoon and were very happy there. It's well equipped, in a great location, clean and Richard, the owner was very welcoming. Situated about 10 mins walk from Nishi Nippori station which is on the useful Yamanote JR line, Tokhouse is surrounded by supermarkets, convenience stores, restaurants and is five minutes from Yanaka - a great traditional Tokyo market street. The owner took the time to pick us up from the station when we arrived and provided some useful maps and information for the local area. Great house, great location, brilliant service.

Hu and Peter from the UK
The accommodation was fantastic, the apartment was very spacious and was kitted out to a very high standard (with all kitchen equipment, washing machine, etc.. etc..). It was in a great area, a very short walk from a main train station and close to great restaurants and shops. Richard was a great host, and showed us the local area and provided us with lots useful information of where to go and other insider knowledge. Great experience!

My family of four stayed at Tokhouse for 7 nights and we had an enjoyable experience.Located at a charming quiet neighborhood, we got a taste of Japanese everyday life by living and buying our groceries amongst the locals. Conveniently located, we were only a short train ride to most of Tokyo's attractions. The house was clean, comfortable and well equipped. As a host, Richard was professional and efficient and was very helpful to ferry our luggages from and to the stations when we arrive and depart. I have to say staying at Tokhouse was one of the highlights of our Tokyo holiday! I will definitely recommend Tokhouse for it's great location, good facilities and excellent host.

We enjoyed very much the Tokhouse. The house is very nice, Japanese style, very comfortable & has everything you need and is only 5 minutes walk to JR. Richard is a great host. He helps with tips and makes you feel really as if Tokhouse is your home. Thanks Richard ! hope we can come again soon.

My friends and I lived for 4 weeks in this wonderful apartment. Richard is a really friendly guy. He knows much about Tokyo and was very helpful if we had any questions during our stay. Right when we arrived he picked us up from the train station and showed us the hot spots in Nishinippori (For example a traditional old street where you can grab delicious food, and much more). The apartment is close to Nishinippori station, located on the JR Yamanote line. It takes about 10 - 25 minutes to reach all the famous districts in Tokyo. Though Nishi-Nippori is close to the center, you have a small town atmosphere there, to relax from busy Tokyo. During our next stay, we will definitely rent one of Richards apartments again for sure. Thank You!!

Richard is fantastic. It was our second overnight visit to Tokyo but this was the visit to define all visits. In one day we toured the neighborhood where the Tokhouse is, enjoyed several street festivals, learned about Richard's life journey and how he ended up in Japan and made new friends. It was a GREAT TIME and we have Richard to thank for his organization, kindness, superior hosting skills and fantastic location. The Tokhouse is beautiful and well-appointed with everything a traveler needs to feel at home immediately. We plan to rent with him every time we visit Tokyo.

This accommodation was the highlight of our trip to Japan!
A fabulous home for a family. Location, location, location!!! Easy travel around Tokyo on the main Yamanote loop line. Quaint traditional house and neighbourhood - a real experience of Japan! Far better than any hotel could offer! And a wonderful host!

Myself, husband and adult daughter stayed a week in the Tokhouse during January, 2012. The Tokhouse during winter was very cosy with heating in every room including the shower/bathroom. In addition floor heating in the kitchen/dining was fabulous. We wanted a functioning kitchen, and found the Tokhouse provided a gas cooktop, griller, rice cooker and toaster/griller plus microwave. The supermarket is a two minute walk. Having a table and chairs was great after hotel accommodation. On the second floor my husband and I slept futon style and there was plenty of extra bedding. My daughter slept in the loft and had her own heater, bed-lamp etc. When I looked on the internet for accommodation in Tokyo location was very important because we had JR passes. Tokhouse is 5 minutes walk from Nishi-Nippori station which is on the Yamanote JR line. This loop line will get you to all the main stations in Tokyo. We also liked the neighborhood, live in amongst the locals and its quiet. No street noise or cars passing. Very pedestrian around the Tokhouse. Richard and Ai are welcoming hosts who provided heaps of information about the local and Tokyo area. Well equipped and spotless. Highly recommended. Louise, Mark and Erin

Nice house, everything works well, and Richard was very generous and knowledgable with this time and experience in helping us find cool stuff to do and places to eat. I would recommend this place to my friends, and wouldn't hesitate staying here again.

Tokhouse has been the perfect door we needed to have to meet in Tokyo. As our first time in Japan, it was the perfect place to start our journey and with everything we could need to do it. Very comfortable and well equipped, I spent some of the best days of my life there. Richard is an awesome host and person too, he's one of the most memorable things I'm going to keep from Tokyo. I know I'm coming back to Japan, and I know it's gonna be to Tokhouse again.

"All you need in a great location."We have just returned from our first 5 days in Tokyo, staying at Tokhouse. As a family of 5 with young kids arriving bleary-eyed early one morning, it was great to be met by Richard at the station and taken to the house. He pointed out some really useful things on the way to the house including one of the best bakeries I have ever been to outside of France! The house was ideal - in a quiet spot, with enough room for us all to spread out, and with all the things we needed. Richard's advice was really excellent and it was great to have access to someone with a lot of experience and who knew his way around. we definitely got a lot more out of our trip than we would have done if we had stayed in a hotel, and this is partly due to Richard and partly due to the fact that the house is in a residential area and so we felt like we got a feel for real Tokyo rather than tourist Tokyo - the contrast between the area we were in, and Asakusa where we had considered staying in a Ryokan was stark. We are so glad we opted for Tokhouse, and when we've saved up enough pennies, we will be back.

We enjoyed very much our stay at Richard's Tokhouse. The accommodations are very well equipped (kitchen utensils, iron and board, hairdryer, etc.). It is very convenient located at Nishi-Nippori Station on the Yamanote line, which takes you almost everywhere ... Thank you Richard, for your kind and helpful assistance! Hope to see you again. Kind regards Alcides & Veronica.

Excellent location and a very professional English speaking owner. We stayed at Tokhouse for 4 nights - a family of 5, parents and children aged 17-23. It is very easy to get to the house by rail with the Keisei Skyliner from Narita to Nippori station. The Skyliner takes only 36 minutes. Then you take the central Yamanote train from Nippori to the next stop (3 minutes), the Nishi-Nippori station, where Richard met us. We got tickets for both legs at the Keisei Skyliner counter at Narita. Only 5 minutes from there by foot to the house which is located in a very quiet "typical Japanese neighborhood". Supermarkets, restaurants, ATMs, good bakery all around the corner. Wonderful walk to the nearby neighborhood Ueno through many small streets and gardens - many culinary temptations and "authentic experience" of a real residential neighborhood in Tokyo on the way.

This is the 1st time we travel to Japan. Richard the owner was a big help. Before we start making our bookings, he had provided us with so much information in order to plan our journey ahead. With his tips sharing we had save some cost. Instead of engaging local tour, we decided to go free & easy since transportation was very convenient (as advised by Richard) The moment we arrived at Nishi Nippori around midnight, Richard greeted us & showed us our accommodation and explained in details all the route & places of interest in Tokyo. The 5 nights stayed at Tokhouse was very cosy and it felt like home. All the amenities is available and easy to use. The location is fantastic as NishiNippori falls under the JR Yamamote line which cover all the main stations/places in Tokyo city. Moreover, it is just a few minutes walk to convenience store & the best bakery in town. Definitely recommend Tokhouse to all.

Jan and Family from New Zealand
Our family of four (parents and children aged 11 and 14) recently stayed at Tok House. It was ideal for us, with everything we needed at an affordable price. The neighbourhood was great, all the amenities we required- particularly enjoyed the little craft beer bar nearby. Close to a Yamanote line station - perfect for easy travel around Tokyo - and it was surprisingly easy to walk to a variety of tourist attractions, including Ueno park and the Tokyo National museum. Richard was very helpful, the maps and local information he provided were invaluable. The house is small (typically for Japan) but has everything you need. It is less suitable to the very young and very old due to the steep stairs and ladder access to sleeping loft, but was just fine for us.

I want to express out complete satisfaction for our staying in Tokhouse Vacation House, starting from the location, ideal to appreciate such wonderful surroundings of Ueno borough and all the fantastic areas nearby, but also ideal as base camp for visiting the whole Tokyo, thanks to Yamanote and other connections close to Tokhouse; the house itself, comfortable and equipped with all what is needed and more that that, perfectly efficient in every respect, with many shops and markets around to satisfy each and every need (including very good draft beer); and to finish with your reception, clear and accurate with respect to all the precious hints you gave to plan our staying in Tokyo. It has been a wonderful experience staying in Tokhouse, we will certainly recommend it to our friends. Be sure we will be again knocking on Tokhouse's door for our next trip in Tokyo. Take care. Giuseppe

Tokhouse is a great base and a good value for a Tokyo visit. There are a lot of sights and experiences accessible in the surrounding area and host, Richard, was very generous with his time and experience in showing me what there is to do. I spent 2 days at Tokhouse 102 as part of a Japan vacation and really enjoyed exploring the nearby residential neighborhoods, as well as the museums and other culturally and historically significant sights that are in the Ueno vicinity Richard is a great host and provides a place you can really live in like a home while traveling. He gave me the train info I needed to get to his property and met me at the station (way earlier than a normal Japan check-in time). I fixed some meals in the kitchen with food from the nearby supermarket and enjoyed eating and drinking in neighborhood establishments as well. When I get back to Japan I will try to stay at Tokhouse again

We stayed here for a couple of days in June and it was great! The place is very nice, clean and spacious (for Japanese standards!), you´ll have everything you need. Richard was a great help to get us started in Tokyo, with maps and loads of good tips - and he knows the best bakeries and restaurants in town! The area s very nice and calm, I was surprised to find coziness in such a gigantic city! It´s easy to get to other parts of the city, the public transport connections are very good and you can even walk directly from there and see a lot! I would totally recommend this accommodation to everyone going to Tokyo!

Best way to begin our stay. The house is very very nicely situated in charming and modern Japanese neighborhood. The owner personally came to the closest station to welcome us as well as lead us to our house. He then went through a very detailed and personalized proposition of places to visit providing even maps and subway plans. The house was very clean and very comfortable to live in. Even if we didn't use the household items, there's everything you could need. Really a delightful stay!

Great location, great house. We stayed here for a week. The location is fantastic- only 5 minutes walk from the Yamanote line that got us everywhere that we wanted to go quickly and cheaply. Richard (the owner) was very helpful and friendly - lots of great tips on where to eat etc. The house is incredibly well equipped, to the extent that even the toilet was streets ahead of anything that I've ever used! Will recommend highly to my friends.

Ottima! Consigliatissima :)
Excellent! We were guests in seven to nine nights, renting two units (lower and upper). Equipped with everything and perfect as a base for exploring Tokyo, a five-minute walk from the station from which you can reach the main districts with the Yamanote. The neighborhood is inboard of the main road so quiet in the evening. The owner was very kind and gave us great advice about places to visit, how to send the suitcases in the airport, media etc.. Being seven, then the value for money is excellent, considering location, services provided and all the rest. Highly recommended :)

Homestyle Tokyo Feel. Tokyo Vacation Houses are located in one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. It has a quiet residential feel. But a short train ride away, the Yamanote line and Chiyoda line are just a few minutes' walk, can whisk you right into the hustle and bustle of this fascinating megalopolis. Tokhouse 101 where we stayed has complete amenities and is home away from home and Richard, the landlord is the best. He makes sure you get your bearings and shows you the secrets of the neighborhoods of Yanaka and Sendagi. The best yakitori, the best curry, the best beer...yeah Richard! Just ask!

Feels like home. I couldn't have made a better choice than staying at Richard's vacation house during my six-day stay in Tokyo. The house is fully equipped, welcoming and super clean. The nice furnished home is on a relaxing back alley and evokes cozy feeling of coming home, the walkable neighborhood and good food options made it easy to do errands and shopping. I especially appreciated the extra care Richard made about my stay by helping with maps and helpful advices. Definitely I will always return.

First Time Visitor. The accommodations were excellent. Kitchen, laundry and stores nearby helped cut down on the expensiveness of eating out each meal. Everything was within walking distance: restaurants, shopping, bank, fast food, train station and food markets. Richard Ashley was a great host by meeting us at the train station, and reviewing nearby sites upon our arrival. He very expeditiously replied to all questions via email and offered helpful tips.

A nice and comfortable stay.We stayed in the Tokhouse Vacation House 102, this is the downstairs apartment. We were really surprised how big the place is, for we heard of the small spaces in tokyo. Richard showed us the rooms, all the functions of the kitchen, bath etc., talked to us about tokyo and sights and was so nice to print out several maps for us. We were two people in the downstairs apartment and had two keys, this was perfect. 3 friends of us took 201 the upstairs apartment, it has a separate entrance. It was nice to stay very close, but also separated, for we are two couples and this way had some private time for ourselves. Everything in the apartment was in good condition and clean, it was easy to heat the room to a comfortable temperature (we visited tokyo in november). The shower is a western style one, which I was thankful for. The house is located near a station of the Yamanote line (Nishinippori), which is perfect to get around in tokyo. On the way from the house to the station are several drug stores, shops and restaurants (ramen!). The apartment is in a quiet street inside a block of houses, not on one of the big streets. Last but not least, the prices for a stay are very reasonable, and the apartments are worth every Yen of it.

Wonderful location and kind people you can't find another in Tokyo downtown Tokyo Vacation Houses owned by Mr. Richard Ashley are wonderful renting houses for travelers all over the world to have an extraordinary staying experience in Tokyo downtown. The location here is great, near the local and relaxing area called "谷根千(Yanesen)" I loved dearly, old buildings, fabulous museums, all kinds of vendor shops, kindly and warm people all around this place. Beyond that, just five-minute walking you can get yourself to the Nishi-Nippori Station, then take either the railroad or the metro at your option to other places in Tokyo. That is, you can easily have a business meeting in 銀座(Ginza), a local temple sightseeing tour in 淺草(Asakusa), or an electric appliance shopping schedule in 秋葉原(Akihabara) in daytime, then back to Tokyo Vacation House area for beverages and delicacies, or even a local Japanese bathhouse shower at night! Moreover, Richard is very well-knowledged about everything of "谷根千(Yanesen)" area and other great places around Tokyo, and he is very responsive in providing all the necessary information you might want to know.

We have welcomed guests from all over the world since 2008

We (group of 6) stayed at Tokhouse at the end of December. Great location in a charming area of Tokyo, conveniently located close to the JR Yamanote line. House was beautiful, heated floors, heated toilet seat, what else could you ask for? All the amenities of a hotel, but with much more character. Richard was very welcoming and accommodating, gave us a tour of the neighborhood & recommendations, and was always available for questions. Thank you so much Richard!

Richard found me on LinkedIn after I asked for information regarding traveling in Japan through the Japan Group; am I glad he did. Richard and I agreed dates and prices for rental of one of his apartments which was clean, comfortable and fanatically accessible to the rest of Tokyo and Japan.
I gathered enough specialist traveling information to make my stay not only far easier but incredibly cheaper. I loved my stay in Tokyo. I have to say that Richard made my stay so much more enjoyable and I cannot recommend staying at Tokhouse more. Richard will always give you solid information and his knowledge of living in Japan is invaluable whether you are staying for two weeks or two years. Thank you Richard and see you again soon.

Richard was very helpful and he showed us around the neighborhood after we checked into the apartment. The place was very convenient and we can find anything we want in the neighborhood and everything is so much cheaper here. There's a wholesale supermarket nearby where we can find anything to bring back home and its so cheap compare to the other supermarket or shops. Richard was very kind to help us bring all our luggages to the train station on our last day in his place and we were very happy with his help. We will definitely go back there again if we want to stay in Tokyo the next time.

Richard was a very considerate, helpful, and knowledgeable host. His house is well-appointed, and would sleep 6 in the combined space of the loft and 2nd floor. He provided us with a great map, hints about the local neighborhood, and the place is easily accessible from the Yamanote JR Line, between Nippori and Nishi-Nippori stations. He has a laundry washing machine, which we found lifesaving! From Narita, there is an express train which would put you at the station in about 35 min. but we had JR Passes, so used the JR lines, which took a bit over an hour. Would definitely recommend his place!!

Absolutely Fantastic and Value for money for overseas visitors.
We stayed 8 days at Tokhouse and have paid three time less money than a hotel. The house is new and clean, the location is great, very short walking distance to train station and shops, friendly and helpful landlord, we had wonderful time, I will recommend to all my friends. Thank you Richard, you will see us visit again.
