whose neighborhood house?
October 14, 2012
We stayed in this house. We sent out several inquiries, chose which of the replies were best, called the person offering it, & agreed that her husband would send us a paypal request. A couple of hours later, a man called. I asked if he was calling about the arrangement made with "Ms. X" and he agreed. I reviewed a couple of things from that call later; everything seemed fine. He said he was sending paypal requests, but they never arrived. When I asked for his email so I could send him a message to reply to, to make sure he got our paypal email address right, he never did. He finally offered to let us stay the first night and work payment out the next day. We arrived at 9:30. Place didn't look like we expected, but we were tired & went to bed. The next evening I texted him to say where I'd left cash to pay him. Thus ensued a back-n-forth in which he let me know he knows nothing about the person I'd made the arrangement with & the price was higher than I'd agreed to with her. This was clearly not an honest mistake on his part. I heard his VM & chose not to reply. When he called, he slid right into the role of returning a call. He was intentionally poaching someone else's tenant. In the end he agreed to a rate that was lower than his published rate, but higher than I would have paid for the place we actually wanted. The house is... a house in a neighborhood. Everything's clean and in good repair. The backyard ends at the lake, but it is not what I'd call a "lake house", just a normal suburban house. The small lot is not wooded. That was a real disappointment--I mentioned in my inquiries that a major reason for our trip was for my 10-yr-old to have a chance to play in fall leaves. Coulda been swindled a lot worse, I suppose.
