Sanctuaire: The Ultimate Lake Retreat
Sanctuaire: The Ultimate Lake Retreat
August 14, 2016
We spent two weeks at Sanctuaire. Sanctuaire is a deceptively private cottage tucked in a valley facing the lake. Any apprehension this may give you when you first pull up, quickly disappears when you walk down the steps to the cottage entry. Perched out in a valley overlooking the lake, it is wonderfully open and bright with lots of windows to view the surrounding forest and bright magical lake views. Despite being less than an hour and half from downtown Chicago it felt like we were living in a tree house with complete and total seclusion. We chose to sleep in the loft, and spent much of our time in our little love nest under the trees. It was amazing to wake up each morning and look up through the skylights to the trees above, with gentle sounds of the birds and lake waves in the distance. We spent hours watching the birds and squirrels visiting the tree above, as well as the fireflies flying around outside the cottage in the evenings. It was a perfect place to reconnect with each other. The kitchen has a wonderful view and everything you need to prepare meals. But, we opted to let others do the cooking and had great food at the restaurants that Mona recommended. I'm not in the greatest shape and debated whether to swim in the lake, but it was a lot easier than I envisioned on the drive up to the cottage. The lake water was warm, clear and clean, with fish and small non- motorized boats. We also decided to try the beach and take the short drive to Lake Michigan. It was fun to see so many people on the beach, though people did get a little crazy with personal fireworks once the sun went down. Thankfully, the wind stopped once it got dark, and the main show was very impressive, accompanied with the sights and sounds of Lake Michigan. We never saw Mona or the management during our stay, but they have created an amazing space with the Sanctuaire. We had everything we needed, enjoyed a couple of peaceful and romantic nights, and look forward to making a return visit soon.
This house was absolutely perfect for our needs, as well as being over the top beautiful. There was more than ample space for everyone, everyone had a bed room, all of such were lovely and comfortable, and there were many cozy sitting areas to share or find privacy in.
Our 10 yr old son and his best friend loved swimming, fishing, cycling, boating and all the activities onsite- which made our job easier...
There is a fabulous kitchen which is a joy to cook in, which works out well since there are truly food to table markets and roadstands minutes away. The home is in the heart of the wine country and lots of local sustainable produce markets and farms. This house has a great location yet private, quiet and secluded.
The house was spotless and the beautiful Hot tub overlooking the lake was sparkling, well maintained and very relaxing.
This house would be great any time of year, for a family or a couple, a great alternative to expensive hotels. We even stayed an extra night it was so relaxing!
Kudos to you, Mona.
Randy and Lillian.
Finding Sanctuaire online at nearly 2:00 in the morning was nothing less than a God-send. I was working in an extremely stressful situation at the time that had me wondering if I was starting to lose it. Balancing my life as a speech therapist, professional storyteller and percussionist, I knew that I needed something. I was supposed to be writing evaluation reports against deadlines that morning but instead found myself searching for some relief from my frustration. I thought that if nothing else, I could dream a little. So, I decided to at least look at places online where I would rather be... and there it was - Sanctuaire. I couldn't hardly believe it! It was PERFECT and EXACTLY what I was looking for!! When I began my search, I was thinking to simply take off some to place alone - somewhere secluded with an easily accessible lake that was visible from the porch or window, with lots of trees embracing me. Sanctuaire provided much more than I could have even wished for. I'd like to heartily "ditto" all that's already been stated by other reviewers. But for me, to be able to sit alone in the quietly bubbling hot tub on a hill overlooking the lake was like something from a dream. To soak in stimulating water, glowing with soft blue lights under a starry night sky beneath a canopy of overhanging trees, was the next best thing to being in Heaven. Did I happen to mention that I had a good time? Lol. I went to Sanctuaire with 3 other friends. Each of us was able to find a quiet space alone if we needed one, to share passages or poems from a good book, and yet to enjoy the option of also sharing a bit of laughter over a home-cooked meal. We even explored nearby restaurants that Mona recommended, specialty and otherwise. (Good choices, Mona!) Knowing that there was actually a quiet neighborhood at the top of the hill - with emergency contacts available to us - felt safe for 4 women traveling alone; and yet there was enough distance between us that it was easy to forget that anybody else was anywhere around. Sanctuaire was rustic and yet lovely and conveniently comfortable; modern (in an old Americana kind of way); and well stocked, including certain food items and various condiments (which came with no surprise user fees, as with many hotels). The welcome gifts that greeted us were a very nice touch and were greatly appreciated. The immediacy of Mona's responses to our questions and contacts was also greatly appreciated. This allowed us to look forward to our trip with confidence, thereby minimizing stress as we all searched for relief and relaxation from the respective stresses that each of us was prompted to escape. Arty, one of our visual artists, sketched and left wonderful images in the pad that Mona had at the house for guests. Rose, our photographer, captured wonderful views of the life all around us. Beth, our face painter, most assuredly was inspired for other designs by all of nature that surrounded us. And I have more stories to tell. So, the trip worked! We enjoyed a stroll through a nearby forest and captured wonderful photos on our last day before heading back to Chicago. I came away from Sanctuaire feeling invigorated, refreshed, renewed, well-rested and ready to take on anything else that might come my way. In fact, my trip to Sanctuaire helped to move me toward the decision to retire from speech therapy 2 months later. So, now I'm just happily telling and writing my stories, singing my songs and playing my drums. So, here ends my praise song for Sanctuaire and for Mona, who cares enough to make this place feel like home for all who come there. Thank you. Peace.
This house right on the lake looked wonderful in the pictures, but we were pleasantly shocked when we saw the full view as we arrived that first day. It takes your breath away - the full bank of windows make you feel like you are on a luxury boat! The views from the 2 main Rooms upstairs were also spectacular. The House was stocked with plenty of the little things -- and the outside heater in the 3 Season was a very nice and well-used surprise. This is a fabulous find, particularly given the weekly cost compared to other lake front properties. It was clean and well stocked with all you need, including firewood. The booking process was easy and the staff know what they are doing and are very helpful. We plan to go back every year. Thanks
Our stay could not have been better! Sanctuaire was the perfect setting for our family retreat, and it accomplished exactly what we wanted at a very special place. There was enough for everyone to come together if they wanted and have some space if they needed it, and that made all the difference. In the end, we cooked and cleaned and relaxed together, and it was truly magical. The pre-arrival grocery shopping was a huge help, as we were all busy from travelling from all over and rather exhausted. We tried to tidy up as much as possible before we left - thanks for the late checkout, it allowed us to enjoy Monday evening. Thanks again for everything.
My wife and I had a very relaxing time - as usual. It's quiet, well maintained house with many extras you don't think of. The owner is extremely knowledgable and helpful. We will be back like we always are. Saves me from booking a trip to Napa. Thanks
Our first trip to Southwest Michigan. There was a family wedding in New Buffalo. Flying from the east coast we decided to make a vacation out of the trip. We could not have been more pleased with our selection of Sanctuaire. The kitchen was outstanding with everything you have and use in your own home. And with the many choices of restaurants in Southwest Michigan if you did not feel like cooking then a nice walk or quick drive to town was an excellent option. The living quarters were very comfortable. The bedrooms were nice especially the linens. Bathrooms were well stocked which in rental houses is not usually the case. A delightful deck and indoor 3 season room allowed for nice views of the yard, lake and hills. The boats and floating dock on the property were terrific. Nearby attractions abound..Golf, antiques stores, Warren Dunes, lots and lots of wineries, easy drive to Lake Michigan, horseback riding, nearby golf course to name a few. One highlight was Mom's Apple Pie at Sandra Kay's Bakery, seriously the best apple pie and don't miss the turnovers! We highly recommend Sanctuaire as the property is well maintained and the owners are responsive and interested in their renter's comfort. We'd like to return. You will enjoy your stay and feel right at home.
