Waialua town is a sleepy former sugar mill town on the quiet part of the North Shore of Oahu, though is only 4 miles from Haleiwa, and 12 miles from Sunset Beach. Haleiwa town is a popular location on the "round the island" route with small businesses focusing on the outdoor and surfing culture of this area. There is a small harbor from which various tours begin, and is an ideal location for those wishing to learn or work on their surfing or stand up paddle boarding skills. A number of businesses offer equipment rentals for these activities, as well as bicycle rentals. There is a bike path that follows the road on which the home is located, as well as a public bus route (the home is situated far enough from the road to not be adversely impacted by these services). The road to Sunset Beach passes a number of world famous surfing spots, which offer spectacular viewing during the winter months, and snorkeling opportunities during the summer. Waimea Valley offers an interpretive walk to Waimea Falls. The Polynesian Cultural Center in nearby Laie presents the most authentic introduction to the various Polynesian cultures to be found anywhere.
