Description from owner
This popular year round cottage sits on a small "hidden gem" lake in Southern Maine. Decorated in a comfortable cottage style, it has a romantic antique pineapple four-poster double bed with quilts in the master bedroom, a second bedroom with two captain's twin beds, an extra cot and a sleeper couch and sleeps 4-6 comfortably.
The beautiful sun porch overlooks the lake from all sides and the wrap-around deck is perfect for morning coffee or afternoon drinks with a 180 view of the water through the pines.
Stay includes use of canoe, two kayaks (with child and adult life preservers), two adult bikes, floating chairs, gas grill, fire pit and 75 ft waterfront for swimming, boating and fishing, including a private dock and a shallow wade in beachy area. Since the house is set up high in the pines, the path to the dock and lake is downhill, but there is a sloping switchback path to make the less-than-a-minute walk easier.
There are many activities from to choose from depending on the season: swimming, boating, biking, hiking, snowmobiling, ice skating, cross country skiing and ice fishing are at your doorstop or nearby.
We offer high-speed internet for those who want to logon, although the cottage is a great place to unplug and swim, fish, hike, bike, boat, read, cook, play games and reconnect with each other. There is a DVD, VCR on two TVs and a good selection of movies, games, puzzles, books and speakers for an IPod for rainy days. There's also a Roku box for streaming video content through Netflix, Amazon or other provider which you may have a membership to.
The cottage is located on a dead-end dirt road with miles of hiking and biking trails to explore - a perfect getaway - just two hours from Boston. The neighbors are a laid back mix of "year rounders" and vacationers, many with modest family farms with vegetable plots and chickens.
Pets allowed on a per case basis with a pet fee and damage deposit outlined on this site. Please ask.
The online calendar is up-to-date on a weekly basis so feel free to check it to see if the dates you are looking to reserve are available.

“A Perfect Getaway”
We've been back less than a week and miss it so already. Dragonfly Hill is a cozy cottage in a perfect location. We enjoyed our time there quite a bit and look forward to returning. Rob was a pleasure to deal with and the house was perfectly represented in the ad as was the area. We took advantage of the endless summer weather and did plenty of swimming and paddling. Caught quite a few fish as well. We look forward to returning to Lake Sherburne. Thanks for everything.
Owner's reply: Hi Amy, Thanks for the kind feedback! We're so happy that you had such a nice trip. We hope to see you back again soon!! Best Regards, Rob
“Just what we needed!”
The cottage is lovely! The living area is open and bright. The sun room and tierd decks outside offer a spectacular view of the lake. The lake is very quiet, peaceful, and contemplative. Our family enjoyed the floating chairs and my 12 year old daughter and I utilized the kayaks (first time experience for both of us)! The kayaks allow you to take in more of the lake and get some great exercise! We too enjoyed many of the places mentioned in previous reviews. Ray and Nancy at Cherry Knoll Farm are wonderful people and offer a variety of fresh foods and vegetables. We even figured out we knew a family member of Ray's! Shaker Pond ice cream is probably the best ice cream we have ever tasted! The breakfast at Cozi Corner is piping hot and simply delicious. The homemade bread is wonderful so my daughter felt it was the best grilled cheese ever! The dinner we had at Woody's was fantastic. The seafood was incredibly fresh and direct from the waters of Maine. I will think about the scallops I ate until the next time. I only wish we went there before our last night of the trip. The Notre Dame Bakery supports the poor and hungry and the baked goods are exquisite. The grounds around the Christian Brothers are very well maintained. Since the cottage is about 45 minutes from the coast, we enjoyed a beautiful beach day in York and Kennebunk. We did feel guilty leaving the lake, but we knew it would be there when we got back! One of the most important things I would like to stress is that I have never rented a cottage online. I was nervous about the process, but was very impressed with the owners response. Rob spent time with me on the phone (prior to renting) and answered my questions. He is thoughtful and sincere. Everything was as explained/shown when we arrived at the cottage. While at the cottage I emailed him a couple of times with small procedural questions and he responded right away. This was truly a jewel. My husband loved to relax and read and even my parents took in 3 nights with our little dog. The time away was just what we all needed! Dragonfly Hill (and yes you will see them) was a wonderful way to spend time with the people you love! Thank you Rob for sharing this charming place!
Owner's reply: Hi Diane, That was such a thoughtful review. Thank you for choosing us! I'm glad your first online rental experience was such a positive one and I hope you have many more great rental vacations in your future (although you're always welcome again at Dragonfly Hill if you come back to our neck of the woods!) Best Regards, Rob
“Didn't want to leave!”
Beautiful place! Had everything it advertised to offer. Had everything you need. Enjoyed kayaking, Canoeing, biking, hiking and grilling! Ray and Carol at the farm were the friendliest and made you feel like family! My only regret, is that I didn't get to stay longer. A week wasn't enough. I would recommend this place to everyone! Will definitely be back! Thank you so much to Rob for renting it out!
Owner's reply: Dear Karen, Thank you for the lovely review. We're thrilled you had such a great trip. We look forward to the chance to have you back in the future! Best Regards, Rob
“Perfect Honeymoon Spot!”
My husband and I stayed here at Dragonflyhill Cottage for our honeymoon with our Labradoodle puppy. It was the perfect spot! The weather was fabulous, just cool enough to make being outside so enjoyable. We used the provided canoe and kayaks out on the lake, rode the bikes around the little quiet neighborhood. You have to go visit Ray & Carol at Cherry Knoll Farms, they are so awesome and we bought the very best steaks we have ever had! Go to Cozi Corner for breakfast and/or lunch and do yourself a favor and get the homemade toast & 3 egg omelet. Best omelet I've ever tasted in my life! The cottage was nice and quaint, it was bright with a lot of windows that we kept open to let in fresh air and sunlight. We were only about 45 minutes from the ocean, and an hour from Freeport. The scenery was more gorgeous than imagined and we truly had the best time on our honeymoon here at Dragonflyhill! If you're looking to come to Maine but don't want to drive super far into the state for your trip, come to Waterboro and stay at Dragonflyhill! You won't be sorry you chose this cottage! Danielle, Joseph, & Lolly
Owner's reply: Dear Danielle, Joseph & Lolly, We're honored that you would choose Dragonfly Hill Cottage for your honeymoon and so pleased to hear you had such a great trip. Thanks for the lovely review! -Rob
“Beautiful Fall in Maine”
The weather was crisp and cool, the sky bright blue and the cabin just as described. The cabin was clean and comfortable and contained all the amenities needed for a great stay. My husband had a great time fishing right from the dock catching large mouth bass and pickerel. We watched as the leaves changed color on the trees and reflected in the lake. We were there in time to observe the lunar eclipse which was spectacular. We will definitely keep this cabin in mind for our next return trip to this area.
Owner's reply: We're so pleased you had such a great visit! Thanks again for choosing us. We look forward to your next visit!
“Wonderful memories of our stay”
The cottage is is nestled into the pines above Lake Sherburne and as you walk to the side to enter you gasp at the stunning view with decks on the side and front and then you open the door to walk inside to a quaint open plan living area perfect for the beautiful view of the lake. We spent a wonderful week with our 13 year old daughters. We swam, went kayaking, bicycling, had a creek walk down below the dam, caught some fish though there weren't many and realized that there was a river Otter around the bend which explained a lot. :) Our girls both 13 had a wonderful time and we even had fun with a photo shoot of them jumping off the dock. Went hiking at the Waterboro Barrens (don't believe the satellite map) and saw a beautiful deposit of sand at the stream left by the glaciers some 150,000 years ago and had a discussion with a wild Grouse who followed us to our girls delightand had day trips to Kennebunkport and Ogunquit. We were sad that we met Carol and Ray of Cherry Knoll Farm the day before we left. We did not realize they were there. Make sure you knock and ring the bell loudly at their door. They are a treat and have a wonderful New England farm house to show you are tell wonderful stories. We brought home bacon and sausage that Ray made. All natural. Sweet memories we have and our girls will talk about this trip when they bring their kids to Maine as adults! That is priceless! Thank you for sharing Dragon Fly Cottage.
Owner's reply: Dear Betsy, Thank you for the lovely review. We're thrilled you had such a memorable visit to Dragonfly Hill! If you're not a professional writer, you missed your calling. We should have you write up all of our collateral in the future with such eloquence! Hopefully see you again in the future. Warm Regards, Rob
“Excellent cottage in a wonderful location”
The place is excellent just as described. We, a family of 4 with 2 young kids 10 and 13, enjoyed our stay there very much both inside the house and outside on the lake, swimming, kayaking, cannoeing or just sitting on the floating chairs. It was the quietest lake we have been to, with so much rowing to do and so many turtles and dragonflies to see. It was indeed a wonderful experience that we look forward to having once again. Many thanks also to the owner, who was so responsive and flexible.
Owner's reply: We're so pleased you had such a wonderful visit. We look forward to seeing you again in the future!
“Comfortable and Relaxing”
We stayed at the cottage for 3 weeks during peak foliage and it had plenty of room to get together with family and friends to enjoy the scenic view from the decks. The cottage was welcoming and very comfortable with everything we needed for an extended stay. This cottage sits between the White Mountains and the beautiful Maine coast which allowed us to visit both within an hours drive from Waterboro. We will gladly stay again should be get the opportunity.
“Two Words: Awe Some”
I was searching for a great way to celebrate my girlfriend's college graduation when I stumbled upon The Dragonfly Hill Cottage... boy, am I glad I did! I reached out to the owner early in the morning after reading a few reviews and google mapping the location... I kept my fingers crossed I would hear back in at least 24 hrs and boom in about 20 minutes my phone rang with the good news that we'd be able to be accommodated even on short notice! The drive from NYC flew by and we arrived to find our lake house in pristine condition with everything right at our fingertips... Hiking, Biking, Swimming, Canoeing, you name it we crushed it.... With helpful tips from the owner we also cooked every meal courtesy of Cherry Knoll farms which is just up the street... the owner's there are this awesome old Boston couple and the bacon is worth the trip for sure... I think I saw maybe 2 other people on the lake the whole time we were there (granted it was mid week) but it seems like a pretty quiet place... Sunrise and sunset from the dock was awesome and so was the view from the master bedroom and the breakfast table... We'll be back for sure... you don't know until you go ... so check it out...
“Great weekend getaway!”
My boyfriend, dog, and I decided to get out of Boston for a couple of days and found Dragonfly Hill Cottage! Valerie was super accommodating of our last minute request and we spent two lovely nights at the cottage. The lake is absolutely beautiful, the cottage is immaculate and adorable and it has everything you could possibly need to cook, relax, and enjoy your stay. It's only two hours outside of Boston and definitely a "hidden gem." We also enjoyed the nearby Cherry Knoll Farm-- delicious steaks, bacon, eggs, and produce!, hiking Abbot Mountain, and yummy BBQ nearby. We were already trying to figure out when we could return before we left! Overall a great experience.
Owner Supplied Testimonials
"Relax in the beauty of a lakefront Maine cottage in the woods."
I arrived with my two boys ages 11, 14 after a quick morning drive from Boston. The cottage is adorable, and walking in to see the view of the lake brought big smiles to the boys. We walked down to the lake and enjoyed the tall trees, green and quiet. The cottage has everything you need. We hung out on the porch, had meals and played games. Went kayaking and canoeing in the lake to explore. Went for a swim too. Went to places nearby for local food and produce (yum!) did some antiquing too. Wonderful place to read, catch up with family and friends and play in the lake. All in all its two thumbs up, we will definitely be back!

Dragonfly Hill is a lovely, little cottage on a quiet dirt road, over-looking the lake. The name isn't just cute and catchy, there was a dragonfly everywhere I looked!
When we got there and settled in, we immediately wandered onto the back deck. Suddenly, everything seemed quiet and all we could hear were the birds chirping. I took it all in, and at that moment I knew it was going to the best vacation ever!
The inside of the cottage was bright and very clean. The view from the sun room was amazing. I think we could have moved in and never left! The bedrooms are adorable, and the decor has an old country feel.
We spent our mornings sitting at the dining table in the sun room, drinking our coffee and enjoying the scenery. After lunch we would go down to the dock and either sit with our feet in the water or make good use of the canoe that is available during the stay.
We loved the canoe and we spent hours on it. There are a lot of fun places to discover and we even found a real beaver dam! There are also a lot of hiking trails and great views in every direction!
In the evening, we went out to the Oak Street Bistro, which was delicious! Excellent lobster bisque! The other nights we cooked from home in the cottage's fully stocked kitchen. The super market, Hannafords, is just a 15 minute drive from the house.
There are also a lot of local farms where you can buy all of your fresh produce and meats, many of them using an honor system. We found that everyone was very friendly and laid-back.
I would definitely encourage anyone who's looking for a romantic, peaceful and/or adventurous vacation to visit Dragonfly Hill. It has everything you need to feel at home, and you will wish you could stay just a little longer.

Thank you for such a nice week - the weather was kind of miraculous, and your house is lovely. We had a very nice time and hugely enjoyed the lake and all your thoughtful touches included with the rental.

Thank you so much for allowing us to enjoy your Maine cottage!
We had a wonderful, RELAXING week. The modern amenities are fabulous. We had everything we could possibly need.
I particularly enjoyed the view from the porch and the fact that the only things to hear were birds and frogs! The 'silence' was golden.
My kids loved fishing in the lake. They caught so many bass that we lost track of counting them.
The lake water was fabulous..warm..clean! The boating was excellent as well. We spent lots of time on the kayaks exploring the lake.
The cottage is perfectly located. We took many day trips. Portland Head Light. Old Orchard. Ogunquit. The wild animal park in Gray. Smitty's Cinema in Sanford was a favorite spot as well... great to enjoy a meal or dessert while watching a movie!
Speaking of movies, your collection is perfect! Something for everyone...lots of classics!
Thanks again for everything! If we make another trip to Maine, we will surely want to stay at Dragonfly Hill Cottage!

I wish I had booked two weeks. We had a great time!
On Saturday I went up alone and enjoyed the peace and quiet until Sunday on my own. I stopped at Ray and Carol's around 1:45 and met Ray out back in the garden. We talked a bit about the garden and he gave me a handful of fresh garlic from the ground. Then he brought me in, showed me around the house, We talked about where I was from and amazingly enough had friends in common! I got some wonderful ribeye steaks, eggs, potatoes, cheese, coldcuts, bread, onions, fruit, veggies and of course crabcakes!! We had some wine and more chat and I finally got to the cottage around 4:00pmish.
It was a gorgeous day/evening, the cottage was perfect! I loved the master bedroom and the window looking out to the lake.
On the first day of summer we had a steak barbeque, a canoe ride, fishing, a campfire, samoas, and get this - saw our first lightening bugs of the season.
Welcome summer! You have a gem of a place there!

First of all I want to say that you have a lovely cottage with beautiful views of the lake. I loved waking up in the morning and having my morning coffee in the sun room enjoying the views and the quiet. We spent many hours out on the lake in the canoe and my son (16 yrs old) loved the kayak. He and my husband fished quite a lot too. The weather could not have been better.
I want to thank you for letting us enjoy your home and have the memories of a really wonderful vacation.

We had a wonderful time in Maine at the cottage. It was peaceful, relaxing and so much fun! We shared with the children the joys of canoeing, boogie boarding, fireflies and driving down winding country roads with the windows down and the radio up. All five of us enjoyed our stay quite a bit.
Jane - MA
The cottage is really lovely! We also really enjoyed visiting Carol and Ray's farm. I bought quite a bit, chatted quite a bit, and the kids enjoyed a tour from Ray. What a special place.

We did enjoy our stay at your cottage. You have a lovely cottage in a beautiful location. Hope to visit again sometime in the future!
Our stay at Dragonfly Hill cottage was one of the most enjoyable adventures our family has ever enjoyed! We fished in the lake every day, catching three large bass (which become three great dinners) and many pickerel and other small fighters, and canoed and kayaked the lake end to end several times. The cottage was exceptionally clean, very well stocked, and we wanted for nothing during our seven-night stay. We paid Ray and Carol at Cherry Knoll Farm three visits (mom's favorite part of the trip!), and ate well the entire stay thanks to their generosity and family-like welcome. Valerie was easy to contact if we had needed anything from her, and was very quick to reply to any questions we had before and during our stay. While staying at Dragonfly Hill, we visited Wells Harbor for some fishing with Cap'n Satch, spent a day exploring Boston and going to a Sox game, took in the Atlantic at Scarbourough, and found some outstanding food at Otto's Pizzeria in Portland, The Flatbread Company in Portsmouth, had ice cream at Shaker Pond in Alfred, and enjoyed our breakfasts overlooking the lake from the cottage. We are looking forward to the next chance we get to visit Maine and Dragonfly Hill Cottage, and have told our friends and families about our new home away from home. Everything about the property was fantastic. I don't think the home itself is more than about 10 years old, and is in immaculate condition. It was very clean, and well supplied for us to keep it clean and leave it clean. Having a washer and dryer, with detergent, was a huge bonus: we didn't have to pack as many clothes, and could return home without a stack of laundry to do as soon as we returned. The only complaint I can think of has nothing to do with the cottage itself, but the last few hundred yards of the road to the cottage were extremely rough. Our kids referred to it as "Test Track" from Disneyworld's EPCOT ride. We have three kids; 13, 9, and 7. Everyone loved the space. The beds were super comfy. SUPER. It was quiet except for several mornings of a Rooster announcing he crossed the road. 13 miles to the nearest Walmart. We felt very safe here and again, the owners are super easy to contact. Enjoy your stay!
We had a wonderful time at Dragonfly Hill Cottage! You have such a cute, cozy and clean place. The kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans, utensils and plates/ cups and we did quite a bit of cooking and barbecuing. The supplied linens and towels were a great addition. We were also thankful to have the washer/ dryer available to us. We all enjoyed fishing and canoeing every day. My son and husband caught half a dozen fish each but my daughter and I didn't catch anything. Next time, I suppose...but we did enjoy our daily mother/ daughter canoe rides around the lake. To the far left of the lake is a fairly large log floating on the lake where about 10 turtles bask in the sun most of the day. We dubbed it Turtle Island and it was our favorite spot to visit each day. One day we even saw a bald eagle on that same log. It was amazing and the first time I have seen one that close up in the wild. We stopped our canoe and watched it until it flew away. Totally majestic! We did enjoy a few evenings out by the fire pit roasting marshmallows with the kids. We visited Cherry Knoll Farm to stock up on a few supplies. Ray and Carol are truly wonderful people. We visited Willowbrook Village and had a few dinners at The Oak Street Bistro. The kids were amazed at the VHS tapes and viewed quite a few of them. We also enjoyed playing the various games. Thank you for sharing your cottage and making it so welcoming. We can tell you take pride in the cottage and it shows!
We loved the cottage. we utilized the campfire pit and the canoe as well as the kayaks. We love the view and it was so close to many area attractions. I have to say it was near perfect - my husband didn't catch any fish, otherwise it was perfect.
I just wanted to thank you and let you know that we had a wonderful time at Dragonfly Hill Cottage. The house was lovely and had everything we could need. It seems like it is well taken care of. We also very much appreciated not only your email with suggestions but also the binder and guest book filled with information and tips from the other guests. It was a very relaxing and fun week and we were sad to have to leave at the end of it.
Just wanted to say thank you and let you know that I had a really nice time at the cottage. Trey and I were very comfortable and the location was just right.
