About the area

Cape Cod as it use to be. Cross over a little wooden bridge onto Lieutenant Island, a residential nature preserve in the town of Wellfleet. Our little island community is surrounded by 1100 acres of Audubon and Wellfleet Bay Wildlife preservation land. This is Cape Cod at its best. When you arrive here there is no reason to leave. With a private bay side beach a minute walk away, bike paths, kayaking, fishing, swimming, and most importantly, peace and quiet, Lieutenant Island has it all including an abundant array of wildlife. If you decide to venture off the Island, you'll find that the area is full of a wide variety of great restaurants, shops, and activities. Less than 10 minutes from the house is the picturesque town center and harbor of Wellfleet, with a plethora of art galleries, fun shops, and fresh food markets. Don't miss the Art Gallery Stroll every Saturday afternoon and stop in at one of the fine restaurants and have some world famous Wellfleet Oysters. And for a day of fun in the sun, Wellfleet has a beautiful stretch of public ocean side beach, part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, equipped with restrooms and lifeguards. The Shore offers a great opportunity for body and board surfing, boogie boards, frisbee, kite flying, and of course swimming.

“Wonderful stay!”

Reviewed 2 Dec 2015

We couldn't have asked for a nicer place to gather our family for Thanksgiving. The weather even cooperated! This house is perfection, one of those just right places. We stayed in half a dozen houses over the decades we've been visiting Wellfleet and this is my favorite house in my favorite location.

Owner's reply: Please come back and thank you for your review.

“Love the Island”

Reviewed 25 Sep 2015

We had a beautiful week on Lieutenant Island. The house was very nice. Had everything we needed. Was very clean. Walking distance to the beach. We even road bikes on the island which was a bit challenging. We love the beauty of the island. We were able to take long walks on the beach and even walked the dirt roads. So much to explore on the island. September is very quiet which makes it even better... peace and quiet and still warm enough for the beaches. The owner was very easy to work with.

Owner's reply: So special to have a renter express all my feelings about my home at lt Island Christine I felt like I was on the island as I read your writings. Thank you

“Terrific August vacation”

great secluded getaway from the hustle and bustle of every day life Be aware that you are hostage to the island at high tide! Plan accordingly!

Owner's reply: Yes and what a unique place to be held hostage and relax And observe nature.

“Excellent”

This well maintained house was very clean and organized when we arrived and had all the stuff needed (kitchen supplies, pots and pans etc). Of course you need to bring some linens and towels. The house is located on beautiful peaceful Lieutenant Island and is a very short walk to the beach, as well as a short drive to other bay side and ocean beaches and is a short drive to all the other things to do on the outer Cape - restaurants, national sea shore, grocery store, shopping, etc. Great location and house size for a family vacation. We have stayed in this house for several years now, always have a great time, no problems, and every year love it. Five stars and two thumbs up!

Owner's reply: Thank you for positive feedback and returning every summer. I know what a long ride it is up to Lieutenant Island, Wellfleet for us New Yorkers but once you arrive on the island it is so worth the travel.

“Beautiful Secluded Retreat”

Reviewed 1 Feb 2014

I stayed on Lieutenant Island for our family's annual reunion. The cape cod bayside island is absolutely gorgeous. The water is shallow and warm. You can kayak around the salt marsh and enjoy the view of great island and Chipman's cove. Wellfleet has so much to offer. There is a Drive in and a movie theatre. If you head into town there are wonderful places to go and get the best fresh seafood like Mac's seafood and sushi or the Bookstore Restaurant. I recommend this vacation spot to anyone who has a love for classic Cape Cod charm.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your review . I have traveled the world and this is my favorite place to go to. Lorraine

“Wonderful Spot to Enjoy the Cape”

Reviewed 16 Aug 2013

Lt's Island is a wonderful place to enjoy the Cape - the marshes and main beach, while small, are absolutely beautiful and fun to explore from day to day as the tide comes and goes. We never got tired of walking to the beach, looking for shells, watching the birds or enjoying the sun set. The proximity to Wellfleet beaches (The National Sea Shore) and the bike path is a plus. Also, there is nice proximity to a general store. The home was perfect for our needs. If you plan to cook a lot, you may find the kitchen to be on the small side. And, if you plan to fill the house, the living room sitting area is a bit small. These were not problems for us - after all, who wants to cook while on vacation?!

Owner's reply: Thank you for your Feedback. My family found that the living area on a vacation brings us closer together in that we are always spread out all over our personal residence and the country.

“Wonderful country home”

Reviewed 29 Jun 2013

This was a lovely property and very clean and well kept home. The property is set in a country setting so if you are looking to truly leave the city life behind this property is amazing. It is a remote so you won't get the action of P-town, but that's a short drive away. The private beach was also amazing. My husband and I had a great Cape getaway and highly recommend the house.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your response I so appreciate renters who understand the significance of Lieutenant Island Please come back and visit.

Owner Supplied Testimonials

What a vacation! My husband and I were looking for some place new to take the kids on the Cape. In the past we had spent our vacations on the upper Cape. We had driven down to P-Town a couple of times and had stopped in Wellfleet on the return. The town is Old Cape Cod with white church steeples and loaded with art galleries.
So we decided that this year we would give it a go and stay in Wellfleet. We did some research and got lucky. We found natures paradise. Lieutenant Island. If you love nature, peace and quite this place is wonderful. Surrounded by the Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary and Wellfleet Nature Preserve this Island with its wonderful beaches is as natural as it gets.
We stayed at the Landau home and could not have been happier. Wonderful sunset views, kayaking around the island. A wonderful beach at the end of the island with tidal pools for the kids and bountiful wildlife. You can kayak over to the Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary or at low tide you can walk over. Bring your camera! The house is charming with a marvelous kitchen which is a cooks delight. To be honest I did not think much about the kitchen before arriving. After all this was a vacation so dining out, fried clams and lobster rolls were on the agenda. But after a couple of days a calm sets in out on this wonderful island. Between the sunsets, cooling breezes and absolute quite I did not want to leave. So the lobster pot came in handy. A very special place and wonderful house. We will be back.
