Saltbox and Pine

July 3, 2012

We were pleased to see that the rental was clean and well supplied. It was close to the wedding events we attended, and convenient to town as well. We were dismayed when we drove onto the street at 11 p.m. and could not locate the house. After two or three passes through the dark neighborhood, we caught a glimmer of light through the trees. Luckily, someone had left the basement light on in the house. This is the only way we found the property in the dark! There is no driveway and a low-profile "spot" for parking was the only clue on the roadway. We carefully made our way through the trees, on a slippery downhill covered with pine needles -- no real path. This could be dangerous for those less firm of foot. The owners should certainly warn tenants of this issue -- come prepared with a large flashlight if you arrive at night! The bug count at the house was very high, which was to be expected in the piney neighborhood. Still, an insect repellent plan at the house would have been much appreciated. I mopped no-see-ums off every horizontal surface daily, and suffered double-figure mosquito bites daily as well. That said, all was in working order. Two small complaints: The DVD player is almost unusable -- we had to tap it every two minutes as it skipped chronically. For $30, the owners could certainly correct this. Also, we really needed to see more than the neck up, as we were dressing for a wedding. A full-length -- or even half-length -- mirror would have been much appreciated by my three young-adult daughters! The two very small bathroom mirrors didn't quite cut it.
