Description from owner
Our house is on a secluded private island, directly on the ocean with a white sandy beach and clear ocean water. The clean water provides excellent fishing and surfing. We are ardent conservationists and have managed to preserve the natural vegetation around the house. We have lots of beach grass and sea oats. The birding around the house is fabulous and we have fall visitors who come just to bird watch. Surf fishing is very good in front of the house because of a slew that has been there for at least 30 years.
The Beach House is a cozy, older oceanfront home. The home was built in 1969 by Paul and CoCo Foster on Figure 8 Island close to Wilmington North Carolina. The design is a mix of Caribbean, Central American and historic Carolina style coastal homes. Our furnishings are eclectic with many 1950's pieces copied from the famous 1952 Herman Miller catalog while the Fosters were living in Central America. The porch railings are strong but do not conform to current building codes. Please review the photos carefully to make sure they are acceptable.
Our house has five bedrooms and two full bathrooms. There is a warm water outside shower which is the most popular bathing area in the summer. The kitchen is fully equipped including a microwave and all the cookware a chef would want.
The house is located on Figure 8 Island just north of Wilmington, North Carolina. It is a private island and a gated community, accessible only to land owners and their guests. There are no public facilities on the island. It has the only privately owned bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway. We have clean and white sandy beaches with blue-green ocean water. Multiple loggerhead turtle nests hatch yearly. The beach is not crowded since the public is not allowed on the island. There are several good restaurants near by and two good grocery stores.
Our house is light and airy and very relaxed. This is not a luxury home, but a functional beach house. Sandy toes are not a problem! Smoking is permitted outside, but must be carefully controlled because of the high winds and fire hazards. We have had several houses burn down on the island due to cigarette butts left burning in the sand or on the porch.

Paula was really nice to work with and the past reviews about the house were right on point. We just got back from a long weekend with our adult children and two friends. The house had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay. It was easy to cook meals because everything is there including a large array of spices and condiments. The view and ocean access were incredible. It felt like we had the entire beach to ourselves. While Sandy Paws isn't one of the Island Mega Mansions it was perfect for us. The rooms were comfortable, bedding was included and there were towels, blankets, fishing poles, surf boards, games, books, magazines, cable television, wifi access and plenty of comfortable furniture. If I could use one word for the interior it would be cozy and one word for the view and beach it would be amazing. Paula came by and we mentioned that we want to return but have more family and she told us that she owns the house behind the beach house also. We went and saw it and it is on the bay side with a boat dock. While it doesn't have the view of Sandy Paws it would be a very nice place to rent for another family. All in all it was wonderful. I hope that you enjoy it as much as we did.
We had a fantastic time. The island and beach are amazing! The house is "rustic". An older beach house that has definitely seen some ocean weathering, and not as fancy as a lot of the other houses on the island appear from the outside, but we have 4 boys and need a place that we don't have to worry about what they might be destroying, so this was perfect for us. Despite the beds seeming older and a little hard, everybody slept wonderfully (and that is saying something with this group) kitchen has all the cooking basics you might need. Ocean is right out the back door and over a sand dune, you can see and hear it from the deck day and night. The beach is never crowded, water is clear. Close to the NC battleship, an aquarium and Mahanaim kayak rentals, which take you on a fantastic family trip up cape fear river to shark tooth island where you can look for shark teeth on the beach- we found a bunch. Would definitely go back.
“Our Trip to Sandy Paws”
We had an absolutely wonderful time! The house was everything we hoped for. It fit our three generation family of seven adults and three kids. Plenty of room and what a view! We were blessed with wonderful weather so we were able to make sandcastles and search for shells. As everything we needed to cook family meals was on site, all we had to bring was the food. It felt like a friend's house loaned to us for the weekend. The only thing missing were the cats we hoped to see - we never saw any!
“What I expect out of a Beach Cottage”
Paula was wonderful and the house was perfect for our stay. Fantastic eclectic furniture and the plus of private access island of figure 8 kept the beach all to ourselves. Now looking to buy on the island because it was so wonderful.
“A Beach House The Way It Was Meant To Be”
We have spent alot of time on different beaches in Southeastern NC, and Figure Eight is the best. Staying in the best house on Figure Eight is even better. It has all of the comforts and conveniences that you could want in a beach house, but it also has the warmth and character that only the efforts of the owners could achieve over a long period of time. We felt right at home the minute that we stepped inside, and enjoyed everything about it. We will definitely be back.
“House with history and beautiful views”
We stayed here over a holiday weekend with two families and six kids - it was a perfect house for a large group. It's not a fancy house but has everything you need for a relaxing stay. And being right on the beach is sublime - you can sit on the porch, read a book and listen to the ocean, or enjoy a glass of wine in the evening and watch the stars come out. The island has paths for walking and biking, but unfortunately no coffee shop. If you're OK staying in a house that is not brand-new, this is a great house.
“a whole lot of wonderful”
our fifth year at this little piece of heaven. early am coffee sitting on the porch rocker with the sun inching above the horizon and pelicans pairs in marching profusion. Can there be a more perfect getaway. quiet, yes. traffic-no. dishwasher-yea. this is the place that the youngest can enjoy making sandcastles, the middles have surfing and water skiing, the eldest can pinch themselves that they were so fortunate to find such an unspoiled vacation spot.
“Fabulous Vacation Spot”
This house had everything we needed for 10 of us to celebrate a significant birthday for one of our group members. The main room, dining area and kitchen were open, sunny and roomy. The front porch was perfect for that early morning caffeine and conversation. The beach was right out the front door and the sound of the waves at night was peaceful . Bedrooms were all clean and beds were comfortable. We couldn't have asked for better accommodation--and the owners were friendly and fabulous to deal with.
