Promising , but needs cleaning and maintenance

February 28, 2013

We are two families with two children each who stayed at this property over president's weekend.  First the good: the place is thoughtfully appointed and sufficiently equipped, with especially good utensils in the kitchen.  However, there is much room for improvement.  It has been a long time since the place was maintained or cleaned properly.  For example, the downstairs toilet rocked on it's seal and the upstairs one had a broken seat, while the downstairs telephone shower head had a hose that was detached.  The ash bucket for the wood stove stood, frozen and full, outside on the deck, and the downstairs wood stove lacks a seal on the door, making it impossible to regulate the flame.  The hot tub did not work, as it had too little water (which was brownish in color) in it to cycle. Many doors and windows are ill-fitting and drafty.  The beds (of which the downstairs one sits on a slant) are equipped with worn-out, uncomfortable mattresses, and the blankets and pillows were simply filthy (as were the bathroom mats).   The stereo system had a thick layer of dust on it.  We could go on, but suffice it to say that for the price paid over this holiday weekend, we expected much more.  At a minimum the place needs a thorough cleaning and a maintenance overhaul.  In order to make this a comfortable place to visit, there need to be a minimum in amenities, such as soap, towels and clean linens for the beds.  Also, the requirement to "clean" before departing, clearly leaves the place in less than good shape for the next renters.  We certainly left the place in much cleaner condition than we found it.  Upon reporting all of these conditions to the Chimney Hill management company, there was no discernible concern for the conditions we had endured during our stay.
