Description of the Winchester vacation cabin rental
Cave Hill Log Cabin is a hewn log cabin built before the Civil War, painstakingly restored by local Adams County craftsmen. The solid rock fireplace was crafted by hand using locally quarried stone. The massive rafters exposed in the loft were sawn from poplar logs in a local Amish sawmill. The interior paneling is 14 to 16 inch wide white pine boards supplied by Patty’s family lumberyard. The roof is hard slate salvaged from the house in Cincinnati where George grew up.

Check out our 3-D Virtual Tour of the Log Cabin at cavehillcabins. It gives you a really good idea of what to expect.

We re-built the cabin at the edge of a little field behind our historic log barn, tucked away in a clearing by itself like a pioneer cabin would be. Surrounded by woods on 3 sides and the old barn on the 4th, it’s in its own world. Your first view of the cabin, coming around the old log barn, will transport you to another place and time.

Attached to the antique log home is a new lean-to with a modern kitchen and bath. Hidden behind the ancient logs are electricity, heating and air conditioning. The cabin smells of fresh cut pine boards.

One of our first guests said: "We absolutely fell in love with your cabin and the feeling and experience it gave us. Along with the woods surrounding it. You all have done an incredible job capturing the look and feel of an original cabin, yet keeping all the necessities and amenities we are accustomed to. I just can't say enough good things about this lovely place. We just loved it!! A few added touches that I loved were the sconces, the little lamp in the bathroom, all the little candles and candle holders throughout the first floor. They all brought an added romantic side to the cabin."

Sleeps 4 guests (in a king bed and two twins in the open loft)

Pet friendly

One bathroom with shower

Amenities We offer amenities comparable to a boutique hotel – crisp hand ironed sheets and pillow cases, handsome comforters on the beds, fluffy towels and natural soap. We do our own laundry, without the harsh chemicals and industrial finishing of a commercial laundry.

Cozy living room with fireplace Relax in the living room before a sparkling fire, surrounded by antique log walls. We supply local seasoned hand split hardwood, kindling, newspaper and fire lighter.

Fully equipped kitchen Prepare your family meals in our well stocked kitchen. We include flatware and china, wine glasses, coffee maker and filters.

Dining room seats 6 guests Enjoy your meals gathered around the oak dining room table . . . or make it a game table or jigsaw puzzling table for great family memories.

Free WiFi for email or light browsing; not for streaming movies or the like.

Entertainment We have a flat screen TV with satellite service and a DVD player. Bring your own movies.

Pet friendly Your dog will enjoy romping and exploring the woods and fields surrounding the cabin.

Porch Out on the porch overlooking the field and woods is a gas grill and table and chairs for dining and lounging. Have your meals on the sun-dappled porch (weather permitting). We do not have a hot tub.

Outdoor fire ring In the evening, start a fire in the fire pit by the barn and roast marshmallows. Star gaze from the field next to the cabin, where the Milky Way shines across the sky.

Immerse yourself in nature Your children will be intrigued to stay in an authentic log cabin surrounded by woods, and to sleep in the loft. Stroll over to the log barn where you enjoy a spectacular view of the Appalachian foothills in the distance. Walk up our woodland path to the cave. Bring a flashlight to explore the cave.

About Adams County:
Adams County is one of the most beautifully scenic counties in Ohio. The Great Serpent Mound is the largest effigy mound in the country. The Amish community offers shops and tidy well kept farms. The southern boundary is the Ohio River, with gorgeous views, fishing and boating. Nature Conservancy’s Edge of Appalachia Preserve and numerous state natural areas showcase the county’s unique features.

Suggested activities:
Visit the Great Serpent Mound and its visitor center. Check out the Wheat Ridge Amish community shops and well kept farms. Travel the Quilt Barn Trail and see the rural countryside by car. Follow the ride of Confederate John Hunt Morgan and his Raiders through Adams County in 1863.
In neighboring Brown County, visit the boyhood home of US Grant in Georgetown; see where Liza reportedly crossed the Ohio River on the ice in Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Visit the Rankin House above the Ripley bluff, where lanterns hung to guide slaves escaping across the river from Kentucky.

Hike in one of the many nature preserves and natural areas in Adams County. Our favorites include Chaparral Prairie (a remnant prairie a mile away). Buzzardsroost Trail (a moderately strenuous hike in the Edge of Appalachia Preserve) and Davis Memorial Nature Preserve (features a pristine stream, high rock cliffs and a geologic fault in the cliff face).

Enjoy birding on our farm or in the nature preserves.

Fish our pond (catch and release only), the ponds in Tranquility Natural Area, Adams Lake State Park, Ohio Brush Creek or the Ohio River.

Have dinner at Murphin Ridge Inn or Moyer Winery. Murphin Ridge is an excellent restaurant in an old farm house near the Amish community. Moyer offers fine food in a dining room overlooking the Ohio River.
Area Information
Adams County is in southern Ohio, 1 hour east of Cincinnati and 2 hours south of Columbus. Make this your home away from home. Come and visit The Great Serpent Mound (an ancient Indian effigy mound), a thriving Amish community, The Nature Conservancy's 18,000 acre Edge of Appalachia Preserve and numerous Ohio State nature preserves. A wonderful place to get away from frantic everyday life in town to a quiet peaceful serene place surrounded by nature.

Romantic Rustic Getaway

March 22, 2016

If you enjoy seclusion, rustic and a great view, then this is one of the best cabins near Cincinnati. From the outside the cabin looks like it was built in the 1800s, but it has been nicely updated on the inside with modern amenities creating an excellent combination of the two. The fireplace is the centerpiece of the main floor and George supplied more than enough firewood for the entire weekend. The kitchen has everything you need to cook a home made meal. The king bed in the loft is very comfortable and the down comforter provided ample warmth for the cold nights. Sunrises and star gazing were a real treat with the view from the nearby barn. There are hardly any lights within the view giving you the sense of total country seclusion. George is a true pleasure and ease to work with and exceptionally friendly. I highly recommend this cabin for a romantic getaway for two. We will certainly be returning in the future.

This cabin is one of a kind. Rustic but it has all that you need for a relaxing stay. The best thing is that it secluded and quiet with beautiful views from the front porch. If you want to leave your hectic life behind and unwind then this place is it.

The cabin was well stocked with nice amenities. George, the innkeeper was very pleasant and provided us with some local history that we found interesting. We will be back!

The pre civil war cabin was like being transported back in time. The recent renovations though provided us with all the comforts and conveniences we were used to. The property itself has plenty to see including several ponds, wildlife and a 30 mile view from the fire pit where we watched thunderstorms track across the valley. For a real adventure there is a cave that goes back many hundreds of feet. It's not an easy access (you have to climb down a bit) but it's something an amateur with a headlamp can explore. Inside you'll find a hidden history of Adams County!

George Carr

Owner's reply:

Thanks, Andre. Come back and hike the trails in the Nature Conservancy Edge of Appalachia Preserve, visit the Great Serpent Mound and check out the shops in the Amish community. When you're done, return and relax on the porch of the log cabin.

The owners were very accommodating in allowing us to adjust our arrival time earlier so we could explore the property ahead of time to scope out a location for us to get married. There was firewood already cut for us when we arrived and when we were running low (after a couple days) the owners cut and delivered more to the cabin, all without us even contacting them. Everything was very clean and in good condition. It was nice to have a stocked kitchen to be able to cook in and plenty of towels for the bathroom. We loved the privacy we felt even with other cabins on the property! We also very much appreciated that the cabin and property was pet friendly; it allowed us to bring our dog and have her there with us when we got married! The scenery and the historic cabin were absolutely beautiful making for perfect wedding pictures, including the snow. The only issue we experienced was that the washer and dryer were broken when we arrived. Luckily, we had packed enough clothing that it did not affect us at all but it would have been nice if we had been notified ahead of time. However, we understand things break unexpectedly and it had no affect on our stay.

George Carr

Owner's reply:

Thanks, Sophia. We appreciate the compliments. Sorry about the washer/dryer. They were recently installed and we assumed they worked. Silly us! They've since been fixed.

I can not say enough about this beautiful log cabin. It is rustic, secluded, and quiet....yet modern, close to town, and all the emenities you need. George and Patty, you have done an incredible job of capturing the look and feel of an old log cabin. Beautiful restoration! Like I said, I just can't say enough good things about "our new favorite spot". Thank you!!

George Carr

Owner's reply:

Paula, thank you very much. It is gratifying to say the least when our efforts are appreciated. We have enjoyed the farm for many years, but never so much as when we share it with others. A special place. Come back anytime. It's not far away, but in a different world, one where you can hear the birds and see the stars.

"What a beautiful restoration! We love the stillness and peace of the setting, tucked away in its own little sanctuary. We spent many hours enjoying the wood-burning fireplace; and we loved having coffee on the porch and watching the birds.

Thanks for all you have done to provide such a wonderful place to rejuvenate."
