Description of the Winchester vacation cabin rental
The Hawks Nest Log Cabin was hand-built by our uncle and cousin from ceder trees on the lot about 35 years ago.The cabin is small, but cozy and comfortable. It's perfect for 2 or 3, but will accommodate up to 4. Both bedrooms and the bathroom are located upstairs. It is located on Tims Ford Lake in middle Tennessee, just outside the town of Winchester. It sits at the edge of the lake, surrounded by 4 wooded acres, with its own dock in a private and quiet residential area. There is an outdoor fire pit for roasting hot dogs and marshmallows. There's a nice deck with a porch swing, and another swing down by the lake. You'll find picnic tables and both a gas and charcoal grill for your convenience. There is plenty of shade and it's very peaceful. There are games and rainy day activities for children, as well as an outdoor swing set and sandbox. Basic cable TV is available, as well as a DVD/VCR with a small library of movies. No smoking is allowed inside the cabin.
Area Information
Tims Ford is a great sports lake for fishing, skiing, or boating. Lots of antique shops and other attractions nearby: 25 miles to Jack Daniels in Lynchburg TN; 15 miles from Falls Mill with the largest working water wheel in United States; mountains nearby for hiking; 16 miles to Sewanee, home of the beautiful University of the South. Located approximately 60 miles northwest of Chattanooga, 90 miles southeast of Nashville, and 50 miles northeast of Huntsville AL and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.

We loved our stay at this log cabin. The owners thought of everything! It has pots, pans, plates, bowls, it was like a home away from home. The fishing there was great. We loved swimming in the lake. And it was very secluded feeling. Very quiet and peaceful.!! I would recomend this to anyone who wants a nice country retreat away from the city!!

Mary & David Dilsaver

Owner's reply:

Thank you Brittany. We're glad to hear that you enjoyed your weekend in Tennessee.

Had a wonderful, relaxing and restful 3 days. Was able to pull up to the private dock with the pontoon boat. A bit of a incline but totally manageable with path in place. The cabin itself was rustic, charming and most comfortable. Safety and privacy were important factors for us gals and HN fit the bill perfectly.

Mary & David Dilsaver

Owner's reply:

I'm so happy to hear that you sisters had a great weekend at the cabin! It is a great place to relax and enjoy the great outdoors. I hope you will come back again when you need another weekend of R&R.

I think it has been 7 years that my wife and I have been coming to Hawks Nest to celebrate our anniversary. Hawks Nest has been our anniversary gift to each other as when we go we stay for at least 9 to 10 days at a time. Hawks Nest has been and is and always will be a destination for us! If you want to feel close to what life is truly meant to be then you must come to Hawks Nest! Just not when we plan to be there! The floating dock that the owners added makes easy docking for our boat. The bass club just down the road always has many fishermen up and down Elks river. The cove the dock is located in never has rough water. And yes Zoey has always been a part of our vacation. For those who don't know Zoey a dog, well she lives on the other side of the cove and will swim across to pay you a visit. Nothing to fear from her for sure, just another gift from our Lord who keeps you covered in shade until you decide to walk down to the dock and get in the sun. My thanks to the Dilsaver's! We will be back again!

Mary & David Dilsaver

Owner's reply:

Thanks Jeff. You and Kim have become like old friends, even though we've never met in person! We're lucky to have such wonderful people come to the cabin, who love it as much as we do. We'll always keep your usual dates open for you! See you next year! :)

This is the perfect place to stay at if you will be visiting the Winchester area. It is a very peaceful area with a nice view of the lake. Staying here worked for us as well because it was not to far from the things we wanted to see while visiting such as the Jack Daniels distillery. Another added bonus is that everything you could need while on vacation was offered for us. They have a very nice set up here you almost forget you're not at home. The beds are very comfortable, and they have a great collection of movies to watch or find something on tv if the weather is bad. While there we got a visit from a neighbors dog named Zoey who is super friendly and we enjoyed her company. Most of our time there was spent enjoying the firepit at nighttime and just taking in the peaceful environment. When it was time for our trip to come to an end none of us wanted to leave. Highly recommend staying here since we cannot wait to return for another stay here.

Mary & David Dilsaver

Owner's reply:

We're really glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay. It's a great place to relax and rejuvenate, and we hope you will be able to come back again soon! Zoey loves to swim across the lake and keep our guests and us company. She's a sweet dog! It's nice to hear that other people consider it a home away from home, just as we do!

Tam and I loved your cabin and its quaint location. Being a carpenter, Tam spent a great deal of time looking at the construction of the tiny house and dreaming of building a tiny house for us to live in. We were amazed by how many small details were thought of by the owners to make life sweet while we were on vacation – labeled kitchen drawers, directions to local eateries and Walmart, charcoal and lighter and more. The view of the lake and the dock, plus all the outdoor seating (sliders, adirondack chairs, porch swing) were awesome! Many, many thanks for sharing Hawks Nest Cabin with us!

We're happy to hear that you enjoyed your weekend! We hope you will return to spend another quiet weekend enjoying our little lakeside retreat.

You will not go wrong choosing this cabin for your vacation or romantic getaway. This secluded cabin on a lake is perfect for a quiet retreat. The cabin was complete with every item that would be found in your home. We enjoyed the fire pit in the cool Tennessee night. You are close to Nashville and Chattanooga as well as local attractions like the Jack Daniels distillary. We can't wait to come back as soon as possible.

Mary & David Dilsaver

Owner's reply:

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay. We try to think of everything you might need. I remember what a pain it was the first time we rented a cabin, and there was nothing there! You shouldn't have to worry about bringing all those little everyday items on a vacation -- It's meant for you to just relax and enjoy! Happy holidays to you, and I hope you can return again soon.

This property is a hidden treasure. My husband and I enjoyed the cabin and its grounds. There is a big difference in staying in a hotel and staying here. There was every family convenience imaginable. The property is well maintained and truly a work of art and love. Directions to the property and all that was available at the property was well documented. Very pleasing to stay here and will do it again!

Mary & David Dilsaver

Owner's reply:

Thank you for your kind words, Kim. We try to keep things in good condition, which isn't always easy when you live 550 miles away! We have a great caretaker, which really helps. I hope you will return again to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet at the cabin.

We had an awesome stay in this little cabin. It has character and is exactly as pictured and we loved it. Mary goes above and beyond to make sure everything you need is there. It was so quiet and peaceful. We loved all the trees and the lake. We will definitely rent it again. So close to town and yet out in the country. The bed was very very comfortable. The best vacation we have ever had. Thank you for sharing your cabin with us Mary.

I booked Hawk Nest cabin for a weekend getaway with my husband to visit the Jack Daniel's Distillery in nearby Lynchburg. The cabin was easy to find, and Mary communicated procedures efficiently and effectively. The cabin is on a beautiful lake, and very peaceful. Rooms were clean, and comfortable. Linens were provided, and the kitchen was filled with all cooking/baking supplies. The cabin also has a television with cable. As an avid college football fan, I was pleased to be able to watch "my game" after our visit to the distillery. Mary allowed us to bring our dog, Simon, who thoroughly enjoyed walking around the area while we were not visiting. The cabin is great for a couple, or a small family. There is plenty to do around the cabin, including toys and games for kids (and adults). While in a peaceful setting, the cabin is a short drive from town where there is a Walmart, and several restaurants and gas stations. I would most definitely book this cabin again if staying in the area. Mary was a pleasure to communicate with, and the accommodations were definitely worth visiting again.

Mary & David Dilsaver

Owner's reply:

Thank you Morgan, for the great review. I'm so glad that you enjoyed your stay, and that everything worked out with Simon. It was great to have a fellow BGSU alumni as a guest in our cabin! I hope you will come back again for another stay!

Hawks Nest is the Best!

September 8, 2015

We absolutely loved our week long stay at the Hawks Nest. It's such a cute little cabin that seemed to welcome us instantly. The setting is beautiful and we were fortunate to experience wonderful weather our entire stay. The cabin is very comfy and cozy and so incredibly well stocked. This is by far the cleanest cabin I have ever rented. We loved the outdoor deck and all the seating options. The people in Winchester were all very friendly. Even the local animals were friendly! The neighbor's puppy dog swam across the water to visit with us a couple of times! The only problem we encountered were a couple of ticks. I was very sad when the day came to leave because I felt like I was leaving home. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful cabin with us, and we look forward to returning again in the future.

Mary & David Dilsaver

Owner's reply:

I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay Rebecca! We find the cabin is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Winchester is a great place, full of great people and I'm glad we found it. I'm afraid the ticks come with the wooded territory. Not my favorite thing either :( but most of the time they aren't too bad. I hope you will be able to come again. Mary & Dave

This cabin is small, full of character, practical and a perfect retreat from ordinary life. The setting is gorgeous, though it was hot, the trees sheltered us and we spent most of the time enjoying the outdoors, the view and abundant nature. We are swimmers, the lake is wonderful, private, clean, warm...delightful. Nice path down the hill, nice dock, and a myriad of sitting spaces. The privacy, the setting and the cabin exceeded expectation!!

Mary & David Dilsaver

Owner's reply:

I'm glad you enjoyed yourself Margy, despite the heat. We love all the trees, and find that even when it's hot, you can find a quiet space to sit in the shade and enjoy the outdoors. I hope you will become regular visitors!

Great 3 day stay. Relaxing at the lake. Trees were changing colors. Fire pit used every night, made smores. Two excellent hikes within 20 to 30 minutes (University of the South perimeter trail and The Walls of Jericho trail.) Cabin is small and cozy perfect for two. More than normal amenities present. no washing machine or dryer which was fine they would have taken to much space.

The Hawks Nest cabin could not have been a better place to stay as I needed was a great place to hide from the world and rest for a few days. The scenery was beautiful, the house was fabulous and very well-designed and well-stocked to help the renter just arrive and enjoy. We had a wonderful time at Hawk's Nest! It is absolutely the most well equipped cabin we have ever stayed in. We have rented many cabins in Tennessee over the past six years including many in East Tennessee. Hawk's Nest is definitely our favorite. Most of the time you need to take items like aluminum foil, zip-lock bags, and first aid items, but this cabin already had all those items. The drawers and cabinets are all labeled with the contents which really helps when trying to locate something. The dock was perfect for fishing, the area was quiet, the gas grill was clean and ready to use, and there is also a charcol grill if you prefer. We will be renting Hawk's nest again soon!

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Hawk's Next cabin. Loved the rustic log walls and atmosphere. The outside space (sitting areas, swings, fire pit, bbq grills, etc.) and the views of the lake through the tall trees were amazing. Just what I needed for my working retreat. Peace and quiet in an ideal setting. Cabin is well-appointed with everything you might need. Kitchen was great. Living area with comfy sofas and nice selection of movies. Upstairs had two comfortable bedrooms (after climbing up on a fun and funky set of stairs in the middle of the cabin). Would definitely recommend it to anyone and can't wait to take my family there for fun.

The Hawk's Nest is a lovely little cabin with all the comforts of a real home....not too fancy, but extremely comfortable and it is clear that the owners have thought of everyone who might stay and made provisions for any eventuality. They even left coffee and condiments just in case you arrived in need of caffeine! It was quiet, serene, and made for a simple, great week. Now, if it were just possible to eliminate gnats and mosquitos from lakefront woods, the world would be perfect. Thank you, Mary!

This cute, doll-house sized cabin is just right for a couple (or two) to spend the week. It is very clean with a large, well appointed deck over-looking the lake. The kitchen is fully equipped with a good sized stove, refrigerator and microwave. It is within 5 minutes of downtown Winchester and 25 minutes down the mountain from Sewanee. We will definitely come back again!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do we need to bring our own firewood?
A: We take any fallen limbs and trees on the property and make them available for firewood. However, we can not guarantee how much wood will be available at any particular time, so if you plan to use the fire pit, it may be wise to bring some wood with you.
Q: Can we bring a tent and pitch it outside the cabin?
A: No, we do not allow tents. The ground is not level and is mostly covered with trees. There is really no good place to put a tent on the grounds.
Q: Can we have a party and invite all our friends over for the day?
A: We would prefer that you do not have a large number of guests. The cabin is located in a quiet residential neighborhood, and the cabin is too small to allow many guests inside if the weather would turn bad. Please do not plan on having a group of people there without prior permission.
Q: What do we need to bring with us?
A: Just bring yourselves and your clothes! We provide towels, sheets, dishes, pots & pans, and most everything you need for a pleasant visit. We stock common kitchen supplies, such as dishwashing liquid, garbage bags, aluminum foil, plastic wrap and zip lock bags We also keep ketchup, mustard, salt, pepper, butter, etc. on hand in the refrigerator. Shampoo and soap are also provided. Just pack your bags and come! There is a Super WalMart nearby where you can pick up any groceries you might need.
Q: Is there a place to swim?
A: There is no beach area, but you can swim off the dock. There is a swim ladder on the end of the dock.
Q: Are both bedrooms upstairs?
A: Yes, both bedrooms and the bathroom are upstairs. The stairs are rather steep, almost like a loft ladder, but they are wide, and there is a railing on one side. If you treat them like a ladder (that is, come down backwards, like you would descend a ladder) they are easy to negotiate. But if you do have a problem with stairs, this wouldn't be the perfect place for you.
