Description from owner

Go back in time and experience the unusual by staying in a turn-of-the-Century Victorian Cottage on the coast of Maine. Located on Westport Island, 10 minutes from Wiscasset, Maine. Sleeps 8, 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, 2 porches, in a quiet setting. $975.00/week, sec. deposit required, plus Maine tax, and one time cleaning fee of $150.00, no pets allowed and non-smokers preferred. Available weekly June 5, 2017 to August 1, 2017. Rent Saturday to Saturday in July, and any combination of days in May, June, and September, and enjoy all that the coast of Maine has to offer.

The cottage on Westport Island is a 1913 Victorian Cottage which we have owned since 1970. The house is old and quirky, but very comfortable, and it has been lovingly maintained by head carpenter, Paul, over the years. Many members of my family have poured their love and sweat into this property. The cottage has four bedrooms, two large screened porches, two bathrooms, washing machine, dryer, standard simple kitchen, and high ceilings on the first floor. New mattresses in two bedrooms. The house is NOT wheel chair accessible. There are antiques in the house...family pieces that we treasure., Warning: there is a small t-v in the house to watch DVD's, but no cable or satellite, so come prepared to listen to the radio, and play cards, games, and badminton. In 2011, we did add Wi-Fi, so you can get E-mail. The owner has discontinued the use of moth balls. We now use dryer sheets instead. We own frontage on the Sheepscot River, and belong to an association which owns a STEEP path to the water where there is a boathouse and small mussle-covered beach. The river is tidal, and the saltwater is COLD, so it is a great river for boating. Children under 10 years of age must wear a PFD when near the water, a new safety rule to keep kids safe. There are wonderful lake and ocean swimming beaches within a half hour drive. Renovation of the downstairs bathroom is complete and we now have a washer and a dryer in the new mudroom.

Beds: 1 Queen Bed, 1 Double Bed, 4 Twin Beds

About the area

There are wonderful lake and ocean swimming beaches within a half hour drive. We love Popham Beach in Phippsburg, and Damariscotta Lake in Jefferson. There are many restaurants in the area, and our favorites are Sea Basket, Le Garage, and Montsweag Roadhouse. Also , the famous "Red's Eats" is in town. These businesses are in Wiscasset, which is a 10 minute drive from the house. Estes Lobster House is in Harpswell. Five Islands Lobster is in Georgetown. There are many restaurants in Boothbay Harbor, and many other activities including boat tours and "Monkey See, Money Do". There is a Botanical Garden in Boothbay which has quickly become a family favorite. Shaw's grocery store is less than 10 minutes from the house. There are golf courses nearby...Sheepscot Links in Whitefield, Bath Country Club in Bath, and Sebasco Estates in Phippsburg. We like all of these courses, and play as often as possible! Cove and boat house right on the saltwater river. Walk to the old ferry landing on the other side of the island, and look out on Montsweag Bay. Le Garage, Sea Basket, Montsweag Roadhouse, Red's Eats in Wiscasset; Estes in Harpswell; Five Islands Lobster in Georgetown; Muscungos Bay Lobster in Round Pond; Round Top Ice Cream in Damariscotta;

“Oasis in the woods of Maine”

Reviewed 23 Aug 2015

If you want a quiet, relaxing week this is the place for you. Expertly made quilts by the owner on the beds and displayed in the home. Be aware there are no TV's but there are many games to play, books to read and there is Wi-Fi for those who can't totally disconnect. We actually found we didn't miss having the TV around. The home is big enough that you are not bumping into each other if you have multiple couples. Lovely to sit in the yard with the morning cup of coffee or afternoon glass of wine and overlook the lake. Much to do -- walk to fishing, golf within a half hour, day trips to Boothbay Harbor, Bath, LL Bean, the beach, and more available to see and do if you browse through the book compiled by the owners of the many wonderful options. Very satisfied with this rustic but clean home.

“Wonderful retreat to relax & enjoy coast of Maine”

“Authentic Coastal Maine”

Reviewed 9 Jun 2014

A wonderfully comfortable and tranquil home with a lovely view. A beautiful natural setting, yet very close to everything. Mornings we spent on the porch listening to the song birds while watching the morning fog lift off the river. The home was on nice quiet road, a perfect place to take a morning walk down to the dock. This home had a well equipped kitchen, plenty of plates, pots, pans, glasses, etc and also a great grill for evening meals. The house was very clean and the beds were comfortable. Each room gave us a great view of the surrounding woods or of the river. Cottage doesn't seem an adequate description, as this home is very large and spacious. Owners gave lots of tips on best state parks to visit, what sandy beaches were best for kids to play at, what restaurants to eat at, great places to shop, etc. and each suggestion was spot on. If you want a place to get away and have and have an authentic coastal maine experience this is the place. Will definitely stay again! It was such a memorable experience!

Owner's reply: Apt description of our Victorian Cottage!!! Thank you!!

“Away from it all, yet good for day outings”

Reviewed 18 Apr 2014

Some quilting friends and I have stayed here a number of times. We love having our family style meals in the screened porch. It is near historical seafaring sites and homes to tour. This place is relaxed, maybe even rustic and has lots of windows to watch nature as you visit friends and family.

Owner's reply: Thanks, Dawn. Speaks well of our dear Victorian Cottage and location.

“Peaceful and lovely”

Reviewed 11 Apr 2014

We have stayed at this lovely country cottage a couple of different times. It is very roomy comfortable. We played games, read, and I brought my sewing machine and did some quilting. Very relaxing and peaceful but yet not far at all from places to visit and things to do.

Owner's reply: Thank you, Linda. It is very peaceful, but close enough to activities if you want more action!!

“Great midcoast location!”
