Built around a courtyard
Monteori is surrounded by woods and fields, with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and a medieval castle. Its architecture is in typical Tuscan style, proportionate and spacious, built around a central courtyard which provides delightful privacy among a profusion of flowers. This is an ideal spot for outdoor dining during the spring and fall months.
The open plan kitchen is the main room of the ground floor. All rooms on the ground floor have doors leading into the garden, giving Monteori the easy Mediterranean way of life where indoors and outdoors seem to melt into each other. On the first floor the living room opens onto a small loggia with steps leading down to the garden. The owner of the estate originally restored this house for herself and her family, and it is therefore furnished with lovely antique furniture, many books, local pottery, terracotta floors and ancient stone fireplaces.
The pool is a short walk from the house (250 m), set in the midst of broom, lavender and cypress trees, overlooking the hilly Tuscan countryside. In spring and autumn one can go for long walks, and light a blazing fire in the kitchen and living room upon one's return. A country restaurant where you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner is in walking distance (2.5 km), if you feel like a stroll.
This house belongs to a a large property which extends over the hills overlooking the Val d'Orcia, an enchanting and miraculously unspoilt valley in southern Tuscany, listed as UNESCO world heritage in 2004. Midway between Florence and Rome, the estate is also within easy reach of Siena, Arezzo, Perugia, Assisi and Orvieto. Renaissance and medieval gems such as Pienza, Montepulciano, Monticchiello and Montalcino and the Abbey of Sant'Antimo are only a few miles away from the houses you can rent at the property.
The countryside around the estate abounds in lovely walks in the woods and the typical "crete senesi" (clay hills) of the region. The food is considered the best in Tuscany and famous wines such as the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino can be sampled in the local cellars.
