A stone house near to the coast
The La Casina estate is reached over a small country road bordered by dry stone walls that leads up the hill, 10 minutes from the coast. The estate is made up of 2 houses that are let together – La Casina and Irminia. They sit above a small valley dotted with Carob trees and distant farmhouses.
The two houses are approx. 300 meters from each other. Between the two houses lies the pool with breathtaking views. The larger house La Casina has 3 bedrooms, the smaller house Irminia also has 3 bedrooms. Both houses are fully air conditioned.
La Casina: this is an old farm built in the honelycoloured local stone which blends in with the surrounding terraced fields. From the terrace you can see right down to the sea. The owner’s son is an architect and did a fabulous job marrying the original features of the property with modern architecture.
The ground floor living rooms, dining room and kitchen all flow into each other and all have French doors onto the terrace. The master bedroom also lies on the ground floor. It has two bathrooms, one with tub and one with shower. Open stairs with no railing lead to the upper floor where you will find two bedrooms (twins or doubles as you prefer), each with its own bathroom. La Casina is fully air-conditioned but also stays naturally cool thanks to the extremely thick walls. The house has 130m2 living space. From the road a private driveway with gate leads to the house.
Irminia: this second house was built in 2020. All rooms are on the ground floor. The open living and dining room with adjacent kitchen opens onto a 40m2 loggia, which is where most of the time is spent in summer. On this living terrace of the Irminia house there is a table for up to 12 people. A double room with en suite bath opens onto a second terrace. There are two more rooms, each with its own bathroom.
The 12m long lap pool lies between the two houses. It is surrounded by carob trees which give pleasant shade. There is a table with chairs and large mattresse for sunbathing. Natural shade is provided by the carob trees which cast their shade over a dining terrace and the sunbeds.
The WIFI reception in both houses comes via an antenna, streaming is therefore not possible.
La Casina and Irminia can only be rented together (not separately) during the high season. Together they sleep a total of 12 people. However, as from May 1st 2021 the owner accepts requests for a separate booking of only La Casina (Irminia remains closed then). The small house Irminia cannot be rented on its own.
Located in the south east of the Island, the so-called baroque Sicily, La Casina makes a particularly attractive holiday location, combining the seaside with fascinating sightseeing.
There are an endless number of baroque towns, all grandeur and grace. These towns were once an architectural chaos of medieval, middle eastern and Punic style. They were shaken into a formal beauty by a devastating earthquake in 1693. New stones were cut, streets redesigned, avenues lengthened and straightened, staircases and grand churches all conceived with baroque grace.
Nothing can prepare you to your first view of the enchanted, languorous, little town of Scicli, located just 15 minutes away from La Casina. Take a walk in its central pedestrian street, via Mormino Penna, paved with pale, shiny stones that have the same colour as the palazzos left and right. The city and its surrounding territories have become famous in recent years thanks to the fictional TV drama Montalbano, which sets the novels of the Sicilian writer Andrea Camilleri in these enchanting places. The fictional Vigatà was filmed in Scicli.
The beach Playa Grande, located at 6 km from La Casina is part of a protected nature reserve and consists of fine golden sand, washed by the cobalt blue sea. During summer season a beach club lets sunbeds and parasols for the day.
The landscape surrounding La Casina is characterized by honey-coloured dry-stone walls delimitating the roads and dividing up the fields, carob trees, fruit and vegetables plantations. The hills are loosely dotted with other farmhouses, most of them restored.
Excellent local produce – fruit, vegetable and fish – can be bought in the nearby villages Donnafugata and Marina di Ragusa.
