Town: Berwick is England’s most northerly town and changed 13 times whilst the English and the Scots fought for around 400 years for control. The history is shown in the town’s museum. Nowadays this coastal town retains much of its charm, with quaint streets enclosed within Elizabethan walls, fortified with bastions, built against attacks in the 1500s and walks along these offer spectacular views over the coast and river estuary to Bamburgh Castle and Holy Island. The town even boasts medieval parts and the most Georgian architecture in any English town and offers excellent amenities including shops/supermarkets, cafés, organic food shops, restaurants and pubs, a weekly market and a quirky micro-pub and brewery whilst the Maltings Arts Centre provides an extensive programme of cultural events including music, theatre and cinema. Berwick is an ideal base to explore Northumberland’s many fabulous castles dotted along the coast and up into the Scottish Borders where there are many stately homes to visit.
