Peaceful retreat
I just returned from a solo trip to Mexico and stayed 6nights at Mar al Cielo. There was a tropical storm during my stay so it rained a lot, but I would return in a heartbeat. Even with the weather mid-week, I managed to get out kayaking (around to the next deserted, incredibly beautiful beach), went hiking on their trails to enjoy a stunning view of the surrounding area and checked out the friendly town of Lo de Marcos and had a great meal on the beach there. During the storm I watched and listening to the waves pound the beach below and was mesmerized by the power of the surf. The next day I was swimming in the warm waters:) Jodi and Carlos are wonderful and friendly hosts, and were there exactly as much as I needed them with advice about the surrounding area. The groundskeeper Raul come a couple times during the week at a specified time (which is flexible) and rings a bell at the bottom of the path to make sure it's ok to come up. Privacy is assured in your little aerie in the Mexican jungle. I cannot recommend this property highly enough, though like other reviewers, I worry that it means it won't be available next time I want to visit! Thanks again to Jodi and Carlos for a great stay!

Owner response: We are so glad you enjoyed the privacy and the nature of Mar al Cielo. Thank you so much for your visit and look forward to seeing you again! ... Saludos!

We spent 11 nights at Mar Al Cielo and it was absolutely wonderful. As the other reviewers have noted, it was a very peaceful, secluded, relaxing retreat from our everyday lives. We were often gone during the afternoon as we had friends staying nearby however, we always tried to get back to our jungle oasis to watch the sunset from the palapas "living room". If you rent a vehicle I recommend a 4WD as the driveway was a bit of a challenge for the car we had. Waking up to the sounds of the birds and going to sleep with the lights of the shrimp trawlers out on the ocean were two of my favorite parts. We were also fortunate to have a lot of whale activity right out front during our stay. Jodie and Carlos are gracious hosts and Raul was always willing to help. The property was always clean and well maintained. We enjoy making our own meals and the kitchen was well equipped to allow for this. We did take a walk down the path and beach to the restaurant Kenia one night but we arrived at 5pm and they were closing at 5:30pm so you may want to check on hours beforehand. Be sure to visit the local bakery for the buns and sweets.

Owner response: Thank you very much for your review. We are happy you found Mar al Cielo to be your peaceful, secluded and relaxing retreat and are glad the whales put on a good show for you! For small rental cars with a low wheelbase, the driveway and small town roads of compact cobblestone are a little bumpy and require some careful navigation. However, all of our service vehicles, including taxis are only 2wheel drive. A vehicle with a slightly higher wheelbase is a good choice and each year we do work at smoothing out the bumps. Thank you and we hope to see you again!

What a magical vacation
My wife and I just returned from a 9 day stay at Mar Al Cielo and I must say that it was one of the most sublime experiences! Imagine total quiet & serenity only interrupted by the sounds of surf, birds and warm breezes rustling the abundant palm fronds. The bedroom is so cozy and spacious just steps away from the outdoor shower and huge bathtub. (The toilet is enclosed on 3 sides but open to dense jungle views - absolutely the best:) The Palapa area is a one minute stroll - sofas, dining table, fridge, hammocks with glorious ocean views and the occasional Humpback Whale performance. It's a short hike down to the beach which is really private - the water is so warm. Best of all, there's a local & intimate beachfront restaurant, Kenia which is operated by a lovely guy named Lilo - fresh seafood is abundant but start off with freshly baked corn chips (served warm) with the incredibly tasty lime-seasoned salsa & guacamole. Hated to leave but dream about our return next winter.

¡celestial! Pronto volveremos a este lugar paradisíaco. ¡Gracias!

unique outdoor living at its best
A quick review of properties of the area highlighted this wonderful property. Our booking was done only a week before our flight. And we are sooo glad Mar Al Cielo (MAC)was available. It had/has everything we are looking for a quiet, secluded, private, beach getaway.Jodi was our email contact and everything went smoothly. We opted for and recommend the airport shuttle (one way) with a grocery stop at either Mega or Walmart to MAC.As Lo de Marcos has very little selection for quality fresh foods. But very nice restaurants. About 35 minutes walk from MAC, which we did 2-3 times. What can we say that hasn't already been said about Mar Al Cielo. It is a great place for privacy and not being around resort crowds. With the outdoor kitchen, living room, toilet, shower and tub, it's a little like camping but with lots of space and comfort. For us, we particularly loved the outdoor shower and tub.The screened windows and doorway for bedroom keeps out the bugs while listening to nature sounds of birds, crickets and distant soothing surfs. The bed is quite comfortable. There is a tv, dvd player and movies are supplied, but most are Spanish . The lower palapa is wonderful to relax. From the pictures there is a "beach", chairs for reading and sun tanning. Hammocks to nap on.A small fridge to keep yourself hydrated and fed.Binoculars are supplied for whale watching. Access to the beach is 5-10 minute "hike". It is steep in places and a little tricky at the bottom.Once there a virtual private beach awaits you.To the right is a 400 m (yd) sandy beach, then another 10 minutes takes to you a small beach side restaurant for very nice meals. If you want an even more private beach, go left. This requires a bit of rock scrambling with footwear. This beach is the best.Over 7 days, we encountered only 1 only person walking through. We were C.O. tanning several hours most afternoons (no sun til 2pm).And each day seemed to have different waves and tides. The water was walk-in comfort.Recommend water shoes due to underwater rocks. And an umbrella from MAC for shade. Gorgeous sunsets almost every night, about 730 pm, are best viewed from the lower palapa. On 2 occasions after 9pm, we spotted flashing lights on the nearby steep hillsides. It was so strange seeing these bright bursts of light.Turns out the light source is from a firefly!! We'd like to thank Jodi & Carlos for their great hospitality and sharing their piece of paradise

Owner response: Thank you very much for your review. We are glad you found the quiet, secluded, private, beach getaway you were looking for at Mar al Cielo. The beaches can be accessed by Mar al Cielo's private path or by walking down our driveway through the palms. Thank you again for your visit to Mar al Cielo.

My husband & I just returned from a wonderful 9-night stay at Mar al Cielo. We were seeking tranquility, which is exactly what we found. Jodi & Carlos are wonderful people who take great pride in looking after both the property and their guests. From the moment we arrived at Mar al Cielo, we were completely captivated by the breathtaking ocean views --- the extent and beauty of which truly cannot be captured in a photograph. We found the house to be absolutely perfect ---extremely private and enchantingly tucked into a lush jungle hillside surrounded by nature and the most spectacular views of the ocean and surrounding mountains. A lovely young man called Raoul came every other day to clean and on those mornings we took advantage of his delicious breakfast deliveries of fresh tropical fruit & pan dulce cooked by his wife (for a small extra charge). Days were spent looking out to sea for dolphins & whales, reading a book on a hammock under the palapa, having a fantastic massage from their visiting therapist, exploring the surrounding hiking trails or taking a stroll down to the local beach restaurant for lunch. Every evening we were greeted with the most spectacular sunset views. We also visited a few good local restaurants or cooked fresh fish of the day under the stars in our jungle kitchen. We decided not to rent a vehicle on this trip to Mexico which we didn't find to be a problem as Jodi & Carlos were always happy to organize a taxi ride for us and we even walked into the village a couple of times. Thank you Jodi & Carlos --- we very much enjoyed our time with you and are already planning our next visit!

delux in the jungle
in one sense it would seem natural to keep this extrordinary spot a secret. at the same time it seems completely wrong to deny anyone this wonderful opportunity to experience what we experienced. jodi and carlos have created something unique. they've done so by not creating at all but by integrating and coexisting with a pristine setting. the ablity to present a delux, comfortable and private retreat in such an uninvasive manner makes you feel like you're in a dream. the local birds, marine life and all the flora and fauna don't even know you're there and you get to enjoy them like it's the way it's supposed to be. thank you so much for an unforgettable stay.

Shush... don't tell anyone!
The photo gallery doesn't show how perfect it is, and all the photos we took couldn't quite capture it either - unless you look at our relaxed and happy faces! The only part of the house that is closed in is the bedroom, with it's comfortable bed, cotton sheets, and windows all around ... (the sound of the surf and morning birds are something I miss more than anything.) Everything else is outside, with views of the ocean, the magnificent stars, and the fabulous wild life .... There is really nothing like Mar al Cielo - Heaven indeed. It is completely private, and kept spotlessly clean by a sweet man who gives you plenty of warning when he is coming to change sheets etc. Jodi and Carlos are delightful hosts, there when you need them, and only then. They had worked hard to find us a taxi to pick us up from the airport and take us shopping at the 'Mega' store. I was resistant to shopping in the equivalent Walmart, and it was a unpleasant way to enter Mexico. However, I was really glad that we took Jodi's advice as we were much more remote than I had imagined. Next time we will rent a car and avoid the 'Mega' store entirely. There are plenty of little shops in the town to get what you need, and Thursday market in a nearby town is really fun. I loved cooking in the outside kitchen, we enjoyed all the walks we took, and the local beach which is a bit of hike to get to, but thoroughly worth it. Star gazing at night was pure magic. We relaxed more completely than we have in years, and enjoyed every moment of our time in Paradise. Thank you for sharing it with us, Jodi and Carlos. We would love to come back ..... tomorrow?

Perfect Honeymoon Spot
After an overwhelming wedding week with friends and family, Mar Al Cielo was the PERFECT place to relax and rejuvenate. It's a bit isolated, but in the best way: private beaches, a private screened "living room" area overlooking the water (where Jodi arranged for us to have massages), an outdoor bath tub and shower, a private drive--all with the option of room service. We saw whales; met new, exotic birds; made friends with the local coatimundi; and went on private hikes on the property, both up the cliffs and down to the ocean. A car is pretty imperative, unless you'd rather not explore the surrounding areas, which you really should. This is the perfect romantic get-away!

Amazing ocean front retreat!
We just came home from a wonderful week at this romantic, ocean front retreat. Mar al cielo is private and secluded, but close enough to walk to the little Mexican town Lo de Marcos. We did our shopping for the whole week at the Mega on our way from the airport and there is no need to leave. A warm welcome by the owners Jodi & Carlos and the playing whales right of the coast. Our very relaxing week was filled with beach, waves, reading, hiking, sand, movies, Mexican food, wine and each other. This jungle paradise exceded our expectations! Thanks Jodi and Carlos for sharing your property with us. Jos&Annet from Abbotsford, B.C., Canada.

Secluded and romantic
Please excuse all the adjectives and adverbs, our only excuse is that my wife and I really, really enjoyed our ten day stay in Mar al Cielo. It is the opposite from touristy, condo infested Puerto Vallarta. (If you prefer the party-life of condo living near bars and crowded beaches, stop reading.) I like to think of the cabin as a tree house - it is perched up on a rise, nestled into the tropical flora. I literally had to push a palm leaf back when using the outdoor shower. You can't see another house from the cabin - just the ocean and the beginnings of the tropical forest that stretch up into the hills. Every morning I took my favorite walk - down to the bluff, then down to the beach (the trail down to the beach does require a little dexterity), then north on the sand beach to the little family run restaurant. I only saw one other couple along this route, and I walked it most days. Most afternoons were spent sitting on compfy lawn furniture on the exquisitely groomed sandy area on the bluff - wine glass in hand watching for whales. We had several great sightings, including a pod of three one afternoon. I used the bungalo in the same area a couple of times - it actually has two beds where you can lounge in true decadence as you take in the expanse of the ocean. Oh my. Jodie and Carlos are the proud owners, and seem to know everyone in the village. Jodie, a Canadian, takes care of the guests. Carlos designed and built the retreat. They really took care of us during our stay. I had experienced some detal pain prior to arrival, but took the "damn the torpedoes" approach and boarded the plane. Short story - emergency root canal my first two days. Jodie set me up with a state-of-the-art dentist in Puerta Vallarto, arranged for transportaton, and even phoned her friends at the dentist to track my progress. She also guided us on food chocies, much appreciated as my wife and I were needlessly concerned. If you are a relative newbie to Mexico (like us) - no worries, Mar al Cielo will work just fine for you. If you enjoy nature, walks on the beach, and getting off the beaten path, you will fall in love with the cabin, as we did. If you are a party peson - Mar al Cielo probably wouldn't work well for you. Plese excuse all the gushing, but, really, Shelley or Keats should be writng this review - our stay was that romantic!

Owner response: Thank you very much for your review. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at Mar al Cielo from watching whales to walking to the beach. In addition to the private path to the beach, one can also very easily reach the beach by walking down the driveway through the lush jungle of palms.

A week in paradise
Our week at Mar al Cielo was completely magical. From the moment we stepped out of our car we enjoyed the sights and sounds of the ocean below. With a short walk up a paved pathway, we were in awe of our private little castle in the jungle. The clean and comfortable bedroom felt like we were living in a tree house with views of the coastline through the palm trees. The outdoor bathroom is completely private and peaceful. We looked out upon the ocean each morning as we showered in the fresh air. We spent evenings soaking in the outdoor tub watching shrimp boats in the distance, a full moon above, and the sounds and smells of nature all around us. We spent much of our days relaxing on the couch of the lower terrace. We listened to the breeze through the palm trees, read a book, emailed family back home, took naps together, and watched a variety of birds soar overhead. We ate breakfast in the covered outdoor kitchen each morning, and grilled steaks and chicken for dinner. Other nights we walked down the drive to the nearby Kenia restaurant on the beach at Playa Vanados. Their shrimp taco's and fish with garlic are amazing! We took the trail to the beach to play in the waves, had a picnic on the beach, and enjoyed looking at the crabs, shells, and other sea life among the rocks. We hiked up the jungle trail to an awe inspiring view from the lookout at the top of the mountain. And, we spent afternoons sunbathing and watching sunsets from the lower building at the edge of the cliff. We didn't see any whales during our visit, but the view is a wonder by itself. The owners, Jodi and Carlos, are truly nice people. They gave us complete privacy, but always greeted us with a smile and offered help or advice when we needed it. Jodi even arranged a couples massage for us at our cottage. The caretaker, Raul, did an exceptional job of cleaning up after us and made sure everything worked properly during our stay. He even rakes the jungle trails clean. We rented a small car during our stay, as we had several activities we needed to go out for. We had no trouble navigating the bumpy dirt driveway, and the rustic road only adds to the feeling of seclusion. Our stay at Mar al Cielo far exceeded our expectations. We had complete and total privacy, surrounded by jungle, in a very cozy home, and exceptional views. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer. It was a fantastic way to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and we hope we can return again someday!

Simply Heaven
My husband and I had the immense and gratifying pleasure of spending two delightful weeks at Mar al Cielo at the end of January, first of February, this year. We both agree, that in the 30 years of travelling together, (as well, as living in the French countryside year-round) and in some pretty exceptional places (!) Mar al Cielo is at the top of our list. (In fact, we've reserved two weeks already for next February--which may extend to three....) If you like: secluded, romantic, walking, sand, birds, friendly locals, ocean waves hitting the shore and enjoy cooking from the freshest ingredients, this, I promise, is the place for you! We were greeted warmly by Jodi & Carlos(They had arranged all ground transport for us, before we left France as we didn't want to rent a car.), who showed us the house and answered any questions we had (There is a very comprehensive book, covering all aspects, so further questions weren't necessary.). It really was a slice of Heaven too, as the house and kitchen sit high above the Pacific, with wonderful views of sky, ocean and jungle. We came fully stocked (which is a good idea, as you really don't want to leave!), so after unpacking, we poured a rum and lime, got the binoculars and relaxed. Dinner that night was a BBQ'd T-bone steak we'd bought and a bottle of Italian wine that they had thoughtfully provided. Slept like babes--every night, with the surf's lullaby. The morning awoke us with the natural "alarm clock" of Yellow-winged Mexican Caciques. And, so the days went. Birdwatching, whale and dolphin sightings (we saw 100's!!) from our "living room" below the house, which had a wonderful couch outside under the palapa (inside were two beds where we napped and spent Valentine's night "camping out"). This was our nightly sunset spot with a 180 degree view of the ocean and sky. The property is excellently maintained and spotless. Everything you need to put together a fine meal are in the kitchen. The photos really didn't do it justice, as the beauty is hard to capture. And, Jodi & Carlos couldn't have been more helpful--or discreet. In short: perfection. We definitly WILL recommend Mar al Cielo to friends and family and wish we were there right now! Next year, we will take their advice on a few excursions, but as I said, we just wanted to enjoy the wonderful beauty they've created. ( I mean how many times do you get to take a bath together in a stone tub by candle light under the starlit sky?)

Idyllic Retreat
From the moment of our friendly welcome by the owners, we thoroughly enjoyed our week-long stay at this romantic retreat. The setting is spectacular, from ocean views to jungle paths. The sense of privacy is total; walking out the door to the open-air tub, with vistas to the ocean, was great. Relaxing on the decks with the sounds of the sea and jungle, and birds overhead was intoxicating. Several nearby towns, a short drive away, provided a variety of shops and restaurants. Our hosts, Jody and Marcos, were helpful but unobtrusive. They went out of their way to buy shrimp and fresh fish, delivered right to our outside refrigerator, for one of our dinners. You can't go wrong with a week at this delightful place.

It was truly an amazing week. The wilderness surrounding the house was breathtaking. Every day brought something new: exotic birds, dolphins and whales, amazing hiking trails, incredible vistas of the surrounding hillsides, the private beach, and the lush jungle floura. I loved the privacy of Mar al Cielo and at the same time the accessability to Lo De Marcos. Never a dull moment! The accomodation was clean, secure and well looked after. Thanks for a truly amazing vacation! Heather

My husband and I just spent three wonderful days at Mar al Cielo. Three weeks would have been even better! The setting is stunning -- a lush ocean-front jungle with walking paths throughout the property and down to a beautiful private sandy beach. We have traveled all over the world and have always avoided coming to Mexico out of fear of being surrounded by big condos and beaches packed with tourists. Mar al Cielo was the complete antithesis to all that we feared. It is completely secluded, yet close enough to everything if you feel like exploring the surrounding areas or just popping out to buy a fresh fish to grill in the lovely outdoor kitchen. The house itself is in superb taste and in perfect harmony with the natural environment. This is the perfect place for a romantic getaway or just a retreat from it all.

We absolutely loved our stay at Mar al Cielo. It is such an amazingly beautiful place, set in a natural coastal jungle/ forest of palms on one side and gorgeous seascape on the other. The brilliant flowers, jungle birds, seabirds, and views in every direction are wonderful, going for walks on the beach and on the jungle trails was really fun, but my favorite thing was the sound-scape from the terrace. Ill never forget the sound of the breeze in the palms, the birds, the waves coming in on the beach below -- just far enough away to be perfectly soothing. The rest of the world seems so far away. The accommodations were beautiful and comfy. We loved the covered open-air kitchen, so perfect for the climate- and we loved all the peace and privacy. Thanks so much Jodi and Carlos for the great hospitality and for creating that perfect little paradise. Cant wait to come back!
