“A Real Gem”

Reviewed 6 Sep 2016

We stayed here a few days for a family trip with our adult children. The property is absolutely gorgeous with mature trees, the river and bridge. The house felt like home. We enjoyed our mornings outside with our coffee enjoying the view and the quiet, had a bonfire at night. We spent a day at the Dells, came home too tired for a fire, and ended up in the basement, playing pool, darts and basketball while talking for a couple hours. There were board games in the closet that I wish we had had time to play. This was a perfect place to spend some time with our family, a spacious house with a beautiful private yard, close to fishing, hiking and tourist attractions. We wanted a place that would come close to camping without having to put a tent up, and we found it. The house was clean, and welcoming. Mattresses were fine, I think the firmness is a personal preference for those that did not like them. The owners have tried (and succeeded) in providing opportunities for fun and relaxation for many ages. I hope we will be able to return soon maybe in the winter for a skiing trip. Thanks to the owners for sharing this beautiful property with us and others.

Owner's reply: Carol, thank you for the very kind words. It is the feedback we get from our guests that has helped us make the retreat what it is today. Look forward to your return Carol!

We had a great time. It was 4 adults and 3 kids under 8 at the house so we had plenty of extra space. We will definitely be doing something like this again.

Owner's reply: Thanks Rebeca! Look forward to seeing you again.

“Much Needed Peace”

Reviewed 18 Sep 2015

Looking for a place to get away from the overpopulated, crowded, loud, rude city in which we currently reside (Chicago), we decided to look on this site and immediately fell in love with Mr. Hopper's property. It was easy to find and, is everything we wanted for a weekend of peace. Beautiful home: Check. Neighbors so far away, their property looked like a dot in the far distance: Check. Peace and Quiet: Check, and I mean NO noise at all. We loved how the home had cabinets stocked with dishes, flatware, pots and pot holders, even some seasonings, tea, coffee and sugar. The picnic table is in the perfect place to just sit and take in all of the beauty before you. Thank you to Mr. Hopper--We will be back!!

Owner's reply: Brandi, we are so glad you were able to take advantage of the peace and quiet available at the retreat. The retreat has always been an enjoyable getaway for us as well. Look forward to seeing you again!

“Great for Family Gathering”

Our famiy of 8 slept comfortably, enjoyed the fire ring, loved that we didn't need to bring cooking utensils, tableware, as we prepared our meals there. Utilized the game room downstairs. Was peaceful and quiet. It was only a half hour from Devil's Lake State Park where we enjoyed a day hike. Would definetely return!

Owner's reply: Sheila, thank you for the review. We think the retreat is a very peaceful place to get away, while still being close to several attractions. Hope to see you again soon!

Excellent experience. Plenty of room inside and outside property. It was nice and secluded, but close enough to town if we needed to pick up anything. We had such a great time. We will definitely be back!

Owner's reply: Thanks for the comments Adam, we look forward to your return!

“Perfect for a larger family”

Reviewed 26 Jul 2014

We had a great time staying at this house. We used it as a "home base" while we traveled around the area and into the Dells for attractions. We also stopped at various Amish shops/homes nearby and enjoyed some Amish bakery treats - yum! (Note that the Amish businesses are closed on Thursdays.) This house was perfect for our needs and fit our larger family, which is really difficult to find economical accommodations near the Dells. We enjoyed being away from really close neighbors and had much more room than the normal hotel-type of setting and was a great value for us. Our kids loved the pool table and various games in the basement and we enjoyed having a full kitchen and living room, along with a nice bathroom and 3 bedrooms, along with a sleeper sofa in the living room providing even more sleeping space. The house is older, but kept nice and some updates have been made (appliances, etc.)... and ironically, it matched much of the same style as our own farm house at home (built in the 1960s)... right down to the same style of cupboards, windows, doors, flooring, etc. and was set up very similar to our own floor plan. We also enjoyed the fact that the drawers and cupboards were stocked with everyday supplies and items you might need. One bedroom even had a closet full of board games that the kids could play, and the living room had several vcr tapes and a working vcr for watching movies. The farm is quiet and peaceful and we enjoyed seeing deer and turkey right outside the windows in the early mornings. The house uses fresh well water, so the water pressure is not very high, but this did not affect us since we are used to that (we have well water, too). :) Overall, this was a very good value to us and we enjoyed not feeling cooped up in a hotel room. We were just far enough away from town that it was quiet, but close enough that we could get where we needed to go within 30 minutes or so. If you're looking for a clean, quiet, spacious place to stay, you won't be disappointed!

Owner's reply: Thanks Mike, we're so pleased to hear you and your family enjoyed your stay. Appreciate your comments. Being close to the various attractions, yet away from crowds is one of the many perks for our guests. Thanks again.

“Cozy home on quiet, serene property”

Reviewed 25 Oct 2013

Our stay at this property was just what me and my friends needed; peace and quiet, relaxation, and to commune with nature. The house is charming and spacious without being cavernous. It is clean, well stocked, comfortable, and located on a beautiful piece of property, much of which is wooded and untouched. A photographer of any level won't lack subject matter to capture in their lens. If you're looking to relax in a serene setting with the comforts of home, minus the distractions, and for an affordable price, this is the place for you. Although we didn't have opportunity to meet the owner, Jim, I did speak with him on the telephone and he couldn't be nicer or more polite. A+ all around. Thanks, Jim!

September 2011 - We enjoyed our stay at the retreat, so beautiful and peaceful! It was exactly what we were looking for. On suggestion, the water pressure was quite weak, anyway to improve on that? A strong shower would be great for a weekend ski stay. Other than that, loved the place and we thought the hospitality was great! Tracy M, Illinois
